Book A Source Book of Royal Commissions and Other Major Governmental Inquiries in Canadian Education 1787 1978

Download or read book A Source Book of Royal Commissions and Other Major Governmental Inquiries in Canadian Education 1787 1978 written by Cary F. Goulson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1981-12-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive primary reference to a rich and often neglected storehouse of information on Canada's educational background. As the boundary between full-fledged royal commissions and other official governmental inquiries is not always clear -- and many legislative committee inquiries and special department of education investigations have been as significant in educational development as regular commissions -- Goulson has included all major ministerial-level governmental inquiries in Canadian education between 1787 and 1978. More than 300 inquiries are included, among them general, special interest, judicial, legislative, parliamentary, and other governmental committees. The information provided for each includes the type of commission or committee, its size, chairman, purpose, dates of appointment and reporting, and primary source references, as well as a selection of its major conclusions and/or recommendations. Official governmental records and documents including the Reports themselves, Legislative Journals, House Debates and Hansard, Sessional Papers, Statutes, and Department of Education records were used as the resource base. This volume will be of specific interest to teachers and students of the history of education, and most educators, no matter what their fields, will find it useful.

Download or read book Living Under Apartheid written by David M. Smith and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book covers the unique spatial structure of society which was South Africa under apartheid. It brings together a cohesive set of research-based contributions to the understanding of this system which was without contemporary parallels. The book considers issues such as industrial location and migrant labour at a national scale. The case studies, which are fully illustrated, deal with problems associated with work and housing for blacks, set in the 3 major metropolitan areas of Cape Town, the Witwatersrand and Durban. Of particular importance is the emphasis given to so-called ‘spontaneous’ (or ‘squatter’) settlement and to informal-sector work for blacks in the emerging apartheid city – something which links directly with central issues of development studies.

Book Governing through Crime in South Africa

Download or read book Governing through Crime in South Africa written by Gail Super and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the historic transition to democracy in South Africa and its impact upon crime and punishment. It examines how the problem of crime has emerged as a major issue to be governed in post-apartheid South Africa. Having undergone a dramatic transition from authoritarianism to democracy, from a white minority to black majority government, South Africa provides rich material on the role that political authority, and challenges to it, play in the construction of crime and criminality. As such, the study is about the socio-cultural and political significance of crime and punishment in the context of a change of regime. The work uses the South African case study to examine a question of wider interest, namely the politics of punishment and race in neoliberalizing regimes. It provides interesting and illuminating empirical material to the broader debate on crime control in post-welfare/neoliberalizing/post transition polities.

Book Planning and Ecology

  • Author : R. D. Roberts
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 1489930450
  • Pages : 474 pages

Download or read book Planning and Ecology written by R. D. Roberts and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professional planning is commonly defined as an activity which is concerned with the rational allocation or exploitation of resources for man's maximum short- and long-term benefit. The science of. ecology is the study of the basic components of these resources (soil, water, air etc. ) and their inter relationships with living organisms. Planning and ecology therefore have many common interests and, as such, have long been associated in resource management. This association was, for example, reflected as early as the 19th century in the writings of Patrick Geddes, the progenitor of modern town planning, whose training as a biologist led him to re-interpret the phenomena of urbanization in ecological terms (Geddes, 1886). Since the time of Geddes the place of ecology has declined in planning circles as other professions and considerations, initially public health and engineering, latterly economic and sociological, have become more central. The reasons for this shifting emphasis are three-fold. First, they reflect changing social attitudes and aspirations in the post-war period. Secondly, many other professions and persuasions (agriculturalists, foresters, in dustrialists etc. ) became organized as pressure groups and helped shape public attitudes and governmental actions. Thirdly, and by far the most important reason, is the prevalence of misconceptions about ecology. Too many people, perhaps misled by the debate surrounding the' environmental movement', equate ecology with conservation. In reality, conservation is but one component part of ecology.

Book excerpt: In the middle of the 1930s, Walt Disney undertook a long journey across Europe from which he returned with hundreds of illustrated books and engravings. A treasure trove that would be a major source of inspiration for his subsequent animated features. The film relates Walt Disney's artistic journey and the joyous clash between high culture and popular culture, in which Gustave Doré, Daumier and Rembrandt play peek-a-boo with Snow White, Pinocchio and the Sleeping Beauty.
