Book Running on Ritalin

Download or read book Running on Ritalin written by Lawrence H. Diller and published by Bantam. This book was released on 1998 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a book as provocative and newsworthy as "Listening to Prozac and "Driven to Distraction, a physician speaks out on America's epidemic level of diagnoses for attention deficit disorder, and on the drug that has become almost a symbol of our times: Ritalin. In 1997 alone, nearly five million people in the United States were prescribed Ritalin--most of them young children diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. Use of this drug, which is a stimulant related to amphetamine, has increased by 700 percent since 1990. And this phenomenon appears to be uniquely American: 90 percent of the world's Ritalin is used here. Is this a cause for alarm--or simply the case of an effective treatment meeting a newly discovered need? Important medical advance--or drug of abuse, as some critics claim? Lawrence Diller has written the definitive book about this crucial debate--evenhanded, wide-ranging, and intimate in its knowledge of families, schools, and the pressures of our speeded-up society. As a pediatrician and family therapist, he has evaluated hundreds of children, adolescents, and adults for ADD, and he offers crucial information and treatment options for anyone struggling with this problem. "Running on Ritalin also throws a spotlight on some of our most fundamental values and goals. What does Ritalin say about the old conundrums of nature vs. nurture, free will vs. responsibility? Is ADD a disability that entitles us to special treatment? If our best is not good enough, can we find motivation and success in a pill? Is there still a place for childhood in the performance-driven America of the late nineties?

Chapters: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder management, Methylphenidate, Treatment of ADHD through working memory training. Excerpt: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder management are the treatment options available to people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). There are several effective and clinically proven options to treat people with ADHD. Multimodal treatment, that is combined pharmacological and behavioral therapy, is the most effective ADHD management strategy, followed by medication alone, and then behavioral treatment. However, these results have been questioned because the study from the multimodal treatment group phased out the behavioral procedure 3 months prior to the last evaluation point but continued the medication group. Indeed, after 14 months the medication group lost its advantage to the long discontinued behavior modification group. By year eight socioeconomic status and family structure were the only predictive variables for ADHD treatment A separate study highlighted the influence that nonclinical factors such as family size may have in mediating the use of pharmacologic therapies for children with ADHD. The most common stimulant medications are methylphenidate (Ritalin), dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), and mixed amphetamine salts (Adderall). Atomoxetine (Strattera), guanfacine (Intuniv) and clonidine (Kapvay) are non-stimulant drugs approved for the treatment of ADHD. Other medications which may be prescribed off-label include certain antidepressants such as tricyclic antidepressants, SNRIs or MAOIs. The presence of comorbid (relating to two diseases that occur together, e.g. depression and ADHD) disorders make finding the right treatment and diagnosis much more costly and time consuming. A child having a comorbid disorder makes the treatment and diagnosis of ADHD more...

Book New Developments in Diagnosing Assessing and Treating ADHD

Download or read book New Developments in Diagnosing Assessing and Treating ADHD written by Gopalan, Rejani Thudalikunnil and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems as though each day more children are diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD causes challenges not only for the patient but also for their parents, siblings, teachers, and other significant people in their lives. They have an increased vulnerability to addiction and crime. Controversially, stimulants are the primary choice for treatment of ADHD in medical management, and the side effects of this long-term pharmacological management has raised many questions. Psychosocial management including parent training, behavior therapy, and educational inputs are also major components of treatment and should not be ignored. Thus, it is vital to explore the latest best practices for the diagnosis, assessment, and management of ADHD. New Developments in Diagnosing, Assessing, and Treating ADHD is a collection of research on innovations in the management of ADHD. While highlighting topics including adolescent care, neurological disorders, and mental health, this book is ideally designed for academicians, clinicians (especially psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and pediatricians), social workers, psychiatric nurses, rehabilitation centers, researchers, and students interested in the handling of this disorder and the long-term effects and social risk factors associated with treatment.
