The workshop agenda is presented along with an introduction and the Surgeon General's keynote address. Excerpts from 9 presentations include the physiological process of lactation, the value of breast milk, cultural context, and approaches to promote breastfeeding and volunteer organizations that promote breastfeeding. Work group and workshop recommendations are given along with a response from the Surgeon General and closing remarks of the workshop. Four appendices are included. (kbc).
