The discussion concentrates upon the aims and expectations with which students enter higher education; the relationship between teacher and pupil; the influence of residential patterns; and the students sense of the relevance of their education in a wider social context. The final chapter is a more personal reflection, in the light of the enquiry, upon the ideals and purposes of higher education.

Download or read book No Distinction Of Sex written by Carol Dyhouse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939 women represented nearly one quarter of the student population in British universities. Though tantamount to a "social revolution" in the eyes of many contemporaries, the process has recieved scant attention from historians. Whilst prejudice and hostility towards women lingered on in Oxford and Cambridge, it has often been assumed that the female presence was welcomed elsewhere. The younger, civic universities commonly advertised themselves as making "no distinction of sex" in admissions, appointments, or in educational policy.; This work of social history, based on extensive archival research, examines the truth of these claims and explores the experiences of women teachers and students in this period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1972 Diversity and Choice in Higher Education focuses on the diversity of institutions and the corresponding notion that students should be allowed to choose freely between them, regardless of distance from home. The book includes an exhaustive assessment of relevant research evidence, not only from Britain but also from the United States and other countries. The author examines such topics as the amount of diversity and choice permitted in the higher education systems of different countries, the extent to which the British system is diversified and the way in which students are distributed within it. He also explores certain hypotheses relating to the way pupils make their choice, examines critically the concept of matching students to institutions and discusses alternative models of student distribution.

Download or read book Oxford the Collegiate University written by Ted Tapper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxford is one of the world’s great universities but this has not meant that it is exempt from pressures for change. On various fronts it has been required to meet the challenges that universities almost worldwide have to face. Given the retrenchment of public funding, especially to support undergraduate teaching, it has been required to augment its financial base, while at the same time deciding how to respond to pressure from successive governments determined to use higher education to achieve their own policy goals. While still consistently ranked as a world-class university, it has to decide how it is to acquire the funding to continue in this league, or whether this goal is worth pursuing. Oxford is a collegiate university, which means its colleges share with the University responsibility for the delivery of its central goals. Is this balance of authority shifting over time? If so, how is this to be accounted for, and what are the likely outcomes for the collegiate university? This book sets out to address these questions and arrives at an essentially positive conclusion. Oxford will continue to remain an effective collegiate university and, while its identity will change, its central character will persist.
