Download or read book Race Politics in Britain and France written by Erik Bleich and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-05-26 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain and France have developed substantially different policies to manage racial tensions since the 1960s, in spite of having similar numbers of post-war ethnic minority immigrants. This book provides the first detailed historical exploration of race policy development in these two countries. In this path-breaking work, Bleich argues against common wisdom that attributes policy outcomes to the role of powerful interest groups or to the constraints of existing institutions, instead emphasizing the importance of frames as widely-held ideas that propelled policymaking in different directions. British policymakers' framing of race and racism principally in North American terms of color discrimination encouraged them to import many policies from across the Atlantic. For decades after WWII, by contrast, French policy leaders framed racism in terms influenced largely by their Vichy past, which encouraged policies designed primarily to counter hate speech while avoiding the recognition of race found across the English Channel.
Download or read book Housing and Race in Industrial Society written by David H. McKay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comparative study of the relationship between civil rights law, housing and urban policy in Britain and the United States. It focuses on the ways in which governments have attempted to remove racial discrimination and disadvantage in private and public sector housing. The study, first published in 1977, does not simply consist of an account of administrative and judicial attempts to remove discrimination. A major concern is to place civil rights laws in their total political, economic and social environments. The book explains and compares the nature of racial residential change in both countries, and assesses the impact of civil rights law on existing patterns of discrimination and disadvantage. Other public policies, in particular housing and urban policies, are examined and their relationship to anti-discrimination measures is analysed. In explaining differences between the two countries, emphasis is placed on the role of government in urban society, the political economies of urban areas, and the social and political differences between minority groups. Finally, the study identifies the limits to effective civil rights law enforcement and provides some indication as to the policy alternatives open to decision-makers in the two countries.

Download or read book Housing Race and Law written by Martin MacEwen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equality of opportunity in housing is a key issue in social justice in Britain today. To the extent that it patterns an individual's educational, social and economic development, housing constitutes a crucial battleground in the fight against racial discrimination. Housing, Race and Law is the first publication to examine the law in relation to issues of housing and race in both the private and public sector. It places these issues in the broader context of the development of anti-discrimination legislation, outlines the current legislation and examines its impact in relation to owner occupation, public housing, housing association tenancies and private lets. Throughout, the book emphasizes the practical impact of the various legislative provisions, and discusses the responses of the principle institutions from government departments and relevant professions to the Commission for Racial Equality and the Community Relations Councils (or Racial Equality Councils). It argues a case for a new approach to appraisal, review and enforcement. By collating material from a wide variety of sources, the author provides an original assessment of the Race Relations Act of 1976 and its impact on housing which, in its provision of cogent material and arguments for reforms, is designed to be of value to practitioners, academics and those concerned with racial discrimination.

Download or read book Equality written by Bob Hepple and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-28 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Equality Act 2010 is a major landmark in the long struggle for equal rights. This book tells the story of how and why it came to be enacted, what it means, what changes it can bring about in British society, and - no less important - what the Act will not do. The Act is the outcome of over 13 years of research, public debate and campaigning, starting with the publication of Equality: A New Framework. Report of the Independent Review of the Enforcement of UK Anti-Discrimination Legislation by Bob Hepple, Mary Coussey and Tufyal Choudhury (Hart Publishing, 2000). The aim of this book is to examine the aims and structure of the new legal framework and to assess the Act against goals of reform set by the earlier review: harmonising and extending the law on status equality; widening the areas of unlawful conduct; changing organisational policy and behaviour including positive duties to advance equality; and improving enforcement of the law. The book will be essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the Act and the wider context of equality law, including students of law and social sciences, human rights activists and lawyers, as well as the general reader.
