Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Ontario Assessment Commission, 1902 Since making our report in January last, we have proceeded with the investigation of the matters referred to us, namely, to inquire into and report upon: (1.) The operation of the laws now in force relating to the assessment of different classes of property, for the purpose of municipal taxation, in the Province of Ontario, and the collection of taxes, and the sale of lands for arrears thereof, and the duties of the municipal officers in relation thereto; (2.) The assessment of lands and the improvements thereon, respectively; (3.) The most equitable method of assessing stocks and other property of mercantile firms and corporations; (4.) The most equitable mode of assessing companies operating public franchises under Statutes in force in the Province of Ontario, or under agreements with municipal corporations, such as companies for the supplying of water, light, heat and power to municipalities and the inhabitants thereof, telegraph and telephone companies and companies operating railways, street railways and electric railways; (5.) Improvements in the assessment laws of Ontario suggested by legislation of recent years in other countries: 6.) The statutory exemptions from taxation now in force, and as to what, if any, changes should be made therein: (7.) The re-arrangement, revision, amendment and consolidation of the provisions of The Assessment Act, and the amendments thereto; And to prepare such amendments as might appear to be advisable; and to inquire, and hear, and consider, and report upon any other matters connected with the assessment and taxation of property which might be brought to our attention, or which might appear to us to be proper subjects for consideration. Present Law. For the consideration of these various questions it will be convenient to set out shortly, in the first place, the main features of the present law in Ontario. Speaking broadly, it may be said that the system of taxation in force in Ontario is a form of what is generally known as the General Property Tax. By the letter of the law, all property in the Province, both real and personal, as defined by the Act, is liable to taxation, subject to certain exemptions set forth in Section 7 of the Assessment Act. The definition of "Real Property" makes it include buildings or other things erected upon or affixed to the land, and all machinery so fixed to any buildings as to form in law part of the realty, also all trees or underwood growing on the land; land covered by water and mines and minerals, quarries and fossils not belonging to the Crown. "Personal Property" includes income accruing in the Province, and all property in the Province not included in the definition of real property. Exemptions. The exemptions from taxation include those provided for in nearly all civilized countries, such as Crown or public property, and property devoted to uses which are of general benefit to the community, such as property for religious, charitable or educational purposes. There are other classes of exemptions, some, such as "household effects, books and wearing apparel," were probably made exempt to prevent undue inquiry into private affairs, and some in order to specially encourage particular industries or pursuits, e.g., grain in transitu, horses, cattle, etc., owned and held in carrying on the general business of farming and grazing. Book The Adult Learner

Download or read book The Adult Learner written by Malcolm S. Knowles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-20 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids including a PowerPoint presentation for each chapter. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eric Arthur fell in love with Toronto the first time he saw it. The year was 1923; he was twenty-five years old, newly arrived to teach architecture at the University of Toronto. For the next sixty years he dedicated himself to saving the great buildings of Toronto's past. Toronto, No Mean City sounded a clarion call in his crusade. First published in 1964, it sparked the preservation movement of the 1960s and 1970s and became its bible. This reprint of the third edition, prepared by Stephen Otto, updates Arthur's classic to include information and illustrations uncovered since the appearance of the first edition. Four new essays were commissioned for this reprint. Christopher Hume, architecture critic and urban affairs columnist for the Toronto Star, addresses the changes to the city since the appearance of the third edition in 1986. Architect and heritage preservation activist Catherine Nasmith assesses the current status of the city's heritage preservation movement. Susan Crean, a freelance writer in Toronto, explores Toronto's vibrant arts scene. Mark Kingwell, professor and cultural commentator, reflects on the development of professional and amateur sports in and around town. Readers will delight in these anecdotal accounts of the city's rich architectural heritage.

Book Planning Canadian Regions

Download or read book Planning Canadian Regions written by Gerald Hodge and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planning Canadian Regions is the first book to consolidate the history, evolution, current practice, and future prospects for regional planning in Canada. As planners grapple with challenges wrought by globalization, the evolution of massive new city-regions, and the pressures for sustainable and community economic development, a deeper understanding of Canada’s approaches is invaluable. Hodge and Robinson identify the intellectual and conceptual foundations of regional planning and review the history and main modes of regional planning for rural regions, economic development regions, resource development regions, and metropolitan and city-regions. They draw lessons from Canada’s past experience and conclude by proposing a new paradigm addressing the needs of regional planning now and in the future, emphasizing regional governance, greater inclusiveness and integration of physical planning with planning for economic sustainability and natural ecosystems. Planning Canadian Regions will be a much-needed text for students and teachers of regional planning and an indispensable reference for planning practitioners. It will also find a receptive audience in such disciplines as urban planning, environmental studies, geography, political science, public administration, and economics.
