Book Fisheries Development and Management in India 1785 1986

Download or read book Fisheries Development and Management in India 1785 1986 written by Nune Subba Rao and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1989 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries play an important role in the economy of nations bordering the sea and this is especially true in a populous country like India where a large majority continues to live below the poverty line. Sea fishing has been an occupation with the coastal people of India since time immemorial forming an integral part of the maritime heritage. Machanisation has been introduced into the marine fishing with a view to exploit the fisheries potential all along the Indian coastline of 6,500 km by overcoming the deficiencies of the centuries old traditional fishing technology and to augment fish production with a higher fishing effort and also to raise the income levels and living standards of fishermen. The present book, based on the author’s doctoral dissertation, made a bold and pioneering attempt to evaluate the costs and earnings of mechanised and traditional boats for determining their relative operational efficiency and to examine intensively the effects of mechanisation on employment, income levels, consumption pattern and levels of living of fishermen and their social implications. While analysing the merits of the new fishing technology and also the reactions of different groups of fishermen to mechanisation, he spotlights the shortsightedness in the implementation of the programme of mechanisation resulting in a host of negative effects which have implications and also sets forth the valuable lessons which Indian experiences have to offer to the densely populated littoral nations in the Third World. To ensure enduring benefits to the vast majority of marine fishermen, the thesis underscores, among numerous other remedies the need for the provision of an intermediary technology, the need for the institutional support and marketing network and the need for the management of fisheries resources. It also calls for the policies to bring about socio-economic development of the fishing community on par with the rest of the society. All in all, a genuine contribution to knowledge of `grassroots' situations that will have enduring value and that can be useful in both academic and policy-formation circles.

Book Madras Fisheries Department Bulletin Vol XVI 1922 Vol 16

Download or read book Madras Fisheries Department Bulletin Vol XVI 1922 Vol 16 written by James Hornell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Madras Fisheries Department Bulletin, Vol; XVI, 1922, Vol. 16: The Indian Pearl Fisheries of the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay My original report to the Government of Madras, made in 1905, was never published though a limited number of copies, long since exhausted, were printed. As it contained a large body of information on the history and conduct of the local pearl fisheries, nowhere else brought together, Government have been pleased to sanction its publication in a revised form as a Bulletin of the Fisheries Department. Since the inspection which this report chronicles, my acquaintance with the Indian pearl banks has increased immensely, for in 1908 I joined the Fisheries Service of Madras, and was shortly after appointed Superintendent of Pearl and Chank Fisheries in addition to my marine biological duties. More intimate local knowledge has enabled me to make some useful additions to the historical notes, whilst in respect of the recommendations made for the improvement of the banks by cultural means, I have come to the conclusion that local conditions make this work too onerous and uncertain to be worth the heavy expenditure that would be involved. Otherwise the conclusions and recommendations have stood the test of experience and I find surprisingly little that requires alteration or amendment. The majority of the recommendations have been carried out and the best advice I can give my successors is to place reliance first and last on efficient inspection. Experience shows that culture in any form on the banks is virtually impracticable owing to the impossibility of protecting the spat under culture from the ravages of fish. Therefore as a successful natural spat-fall is erratic and its location impossible to predicate, the watchword of the officer in charge should be inspection, efficient and comprehensive. Book excerpt: From their creation in the maw of mollusks to lustrous objects of infatuation and conflict, a revealing look at pearls’ dark history. This book is a beautifully illustrated account of pearls through millennia, from fossils to contemporary jewelry. Pearls are the most human of gems, both miraculous and familiar. Uniquely organic in origin, they are as intimate as our bodies, created through the same process as we grow bones and teeth. They have long been described as an animal’s sacrifice, but until recently their retrieval often entailed the sacrifices of enslaved and indentured divers and laborers. While the shimmer of the pearl has enticed Roman noblewomen, Mughal princes, Hollywood royalty, mavericks, and renegades, encoded in its surface is a history of human endeavor, abuse, and aspiration—pain locked in the layers of a gleaming gem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pearls, People, and Power is the first book to examine the trade, distribution, production, and consumption of pearls and mother-of-pearl in the global Indian Ocean over more than five centuries. While scholars have long recognized the importance of pearling to the social, cultural, and economic practices of both coastal and inland areas, the overwhelming majority have confined themselves to highly localized or at best regional studies of the pearl trade. By contrast, this book stresses how pearling and the exchange in pearl shell were interconnected processes that brought the ports, islands, and coasts into close relation with one another, creating dense networks of connectivity that were not necessarily circumscribed by local, regional, or indeed national frames. Essays from a variety of disciplines address the role of slaves and indentured workers in maritime labor arrangements, systems of bondage and transoceanic migration, the impact of European imperialism on regional and local communities, commodity flows and networks of exchange, and patterns of marine resource exploitation between the Industrial Revolution and Great Depression. By encompassing the geographical, cultural, and thematic diversity of Indian Ocean pearling, Pearls, People, and Power deepens our appreciation of the underlying historical dynamics of the many worlds of the Indian Ocean. Martínez, Michael McCarthy, Jonathan Miran, Steve Mullins, Karl Neuenfeldt, Samuel M. Ostroff, and James Francis Warren.
