Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Entomological Department of the New Jersey Agricultural College Experiment Station, New Brunswick, N. J: For the Year 1904 Shade tree insects attracted attention because of an unusual development of the Cottony Maple Scale, which, however, was largely limited to cities near the Atlantic coast. Climatic or other causes not entomological had severely affected many maple and some other trees in Newark, Montclair and the Oranges and the officers in charge and residents became concerned in consequence, tending to charge all things to insects and demanding of the entomologist a cure for all ills. A consideration of the Cottony Scale will be found on another page. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Entomological Department of the New Jersey Agricultural College Experiment Station, New Brunswick, N. J: For the Year 1905 As to the gypsy moth, its natural spread is slow, and a quarter of a century might elapse before it reached our State did it depend only on these natural powers. Unfortunately, communication by way of railroad, trolley and automobile is now so widespread that at almost any time a colony of the insects may appear at some point far removed from the present infestation. That this is not a fanciful danger is shown by the fact that egg masses have been found on freight cars and moths on passenger trains. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the struggles of the twentieth century, the one between humans and mosquitoes may have been the most vexing, as demonstrated by the long battle to control these bloodsucking pests. As vectors of diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, encephalitis, and dengue fever, mosquitoes forced open a new chapter in the history of medical entomology. Based on extensive use of primary sources, The Mosquito Crusades traces this saga and the parallel efforts of civic groups in New Jersey's Meadowlands and along San Francisco Bay's east side to manage the dangerous mosquito population. Providing readers with a fascinating exploration of the relationship between science, technology, and public policy, Gordon Patterson's narrative begins in New Jersey with John B. Smith's effort to develop a comprehensive plan and solution for mosquito control, one that would serve as a national model. From the Reed Commission's 1900 yellow fever experiment to the first Earth Day seventy years later, Patterson provides an eye-opening account of the crusade to curtail the deadly mosquito population.
