Download or read book China s Christian Colleges written by Daniel Bays and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-27 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's Christian Colleges explores the cross-cultural dynamics that existed on the campuses of the Protestant Christian colleges in China during the first half of the twentieth century. Focusing on two-way cultural influences rather than on missionary efforts or Christianization, these campuses, most of which were American-supported and had a distinctly American flavor, were laboratories or incubators of mutual cultural interaction that has been very rare in modern Chinese history. In this Sino-foreign cultural territory, the collaborative educational endeavor between Westerners and Chinese created a highly unusual degree of cultural hybridity in some Americans and Chinese. The thirteen essays of the book provide concrete examples of why even today, more than a half-century after the colleges were taken over by the state, long-lasting cultural results of life in the colleges remain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume, which are written by friends, colleagues, and former students, are dedicated to Gary B. McGee as a memorial to his life, work, and service. As a professor with a clear calling to teach, he modeled this passion at the Open Bible College (Des Moines, Iowa), Central Bible College (Springfield, Missouri), and the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (Springfield, Missouri). He exuded the understanding that quality teaching, superior scholarship, a genuine Pentecostal spirituality, and an irenic spirit can and should go together. Within the title of this volume, A Light to the Nations, two aspects become clear. First, each person is called to be "a light to the nations," as Gary McGee modeled. Second, and foundational to the first, is the reality that Jesus Christ is the ultimate light, and our energies, study, discussions, and life in general should rely on this fact. As a reflection of Gary McGee's life and ministry, these two aspects are focused through three lenses, which are the three sections of this volume: Ecumenism, Missions, and Pentecostalism. The essays represent a diversity of subjects and denote various explorations by colleagues and friends of Gary B. McGee.

Book Engaging Neighbors and Nations

Download or read book Engaging Neighbors and Nations written by Tim Silberman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-03-27 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelical churches are widely known for their commitment to mission locally and to the ends of the earth. However, in the last century, there have been profound theological and sociological changes that have impacted mission practice. Church and mission leaders have encouraged Christians to respond to the need for mission locally, especially as church decline accelerates in much of the Western world. Yet others are concerned that global mission involvement is being neglected in many local churches. This study explores the factors influencing local church participation in mission both locally and around the world. Through an in-depth analysis of the practices and perspectives among evangelical churches in Australia, the author identifies a range of theological, missiological, and organizational influences on mission practice. Though beliefs about the church, the world, and mission are important, understanding organizational principles, social capital, and the power of relational networks provides invaluable insights into church-mission practice. This book is for those who long to see local churches committed to engaging both their neighbors and the nations in mission, growing our understanding of how to encourage helpful church practices for the sake of Christ.

Book Examining Billy Graham s Theology of Evangelism

Download or read book Examining Billy Graham s Theology of Evangelism written by Thomas P. Johnston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-03-12 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Examining Billy Graham's Theology of Evangelism' was written to advance an unbiased understanding of Billy Graham's theology and practice. Theological examination of Graham's sermons revealed four distinct eras in his theology and practice: -The Early-Early Graham (pre-1949) -The Early Graham (1949-1955) -The Middle Graham (1955-1965) -The Later Graham (1965-present) In each of these eras Graham portrayed a discernible and distinct approach to defining evangelism, theological nomenclature, and cooperative strategy. No literature on Billy Graham discusses, in combination, this evolution in Graham's theology and practice. You are invited to take a fresh look at the teaching and practice of this man who has touched millions of lives through the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Book Power and Partnership

Download or read book Power and Partnership written by Jonathan S. Barnes and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-10 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the concept of partnership between churches in the Global North and South has been an ecumenical goal for well over eight decades, realizing relationships of mutuality, solidarity, and koinonia has been, to say the least, problematic. Seeking to understand the dynamics of power and control in these relationships, this work traces the history of how partnership has been lived out, both as a concept and in practice. It is argued that many of the issues that are problematic for partnerships today can find their antecedents during colonial times at the very beginnings of the modern missionary movement. For those interested in pursuing cross-cultural partnerships today, understanding this history and recognizing the use, as well as the misuse, of power is crucial as we seek genuine relationships of care and friendship in our fractured and divided world.
