Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personnel Journal, Vol. 25: May 1946-April 1947 N order to get the supervisors and foremen we will need in the future, it seems necessary to make some changes in our thinking. TO begin with, we must stop making the customary mistake Of assuming that because an individual has been a high Class and efficient producer he can be trained to be a good foreman. In the past, we have followed this rule too generally with the result that we have spoiled many a good mechanic by making him foreman. Adding insult to injury, we have told him on Friday night that he will be foreman beginning Monday morn in g. Apparently we have taken it for granted that he was thoroughly qualified to do the job because Often little or no effort was made to train him in his new duties and responsibilities. These past erroneous practices have been based on the assumption that ability to perform the work was the important qualification. Technical ability is rated as only about 15% Of the total job requirements Of a good supervisor, according to the experts.
