This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book Climate Change and Foreign Policy

Download or read book Climate Change and Foreign Policy written by Paul G. Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate Change and Foreign Policy: Case Studies from East to West and its companion volume, Environmental Change and Foreign Policy: Theory and Practice, examine and explain the role of foreign policy politics, processes and institutions in efforts to protect the environment and natural resources. They seek to highlight international efforts to address human-induced changes to the natural environment, analyze the actors and institutions that constrain and shape actions on environmental issues, show how environmental changes influence foreign policy processes, and critically assess environmental foreign policies. This book examines the problem of global climate change and assesses the manner in which governments and other actors have attempted to deal with it. It presents a series of in-depth international case studies on climate policy in Australia, Japan, China, Turkey, Hungary, Denmark, France, the European Union and the United States. The authors demonstrate how studying environmental foreign policy can help us to better understand how governments, businesses and civil society actors address—or fail to address—the critical problem climate change. This book will be of strong interest to scholars and students of environmental policy and politics, foreign policy, public policy, climate change and international relations.

Book Congress of the United States

Download or read book Congress of the United States written by Carol S. Plesser and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book focuses on the Congress of the United States which has evolved continuously since its founding. Although critics abound, both in and outside congress itself, it is most certainly true that the tasks and responsibilities assigned to Congress present a challenge to an organisation which is sometimes unwieldy to say the least. Information has become so ubiquitous in the age of the internet that Congress seems to struggle to keep up. Congress is largely run by the permanent staff which is now in excess of 30,000 people. It is pushed, pulled and jerked by lobbying groups whose interests are more often than not in opposition to the best interests of the majority of the population.

Book Multilateral Environmental Agreements and Compliance

Download or read book Multilateral Environmental Agreements and Compliance written by Anna Huggins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adoption of administrative procedures in global governance has the potential to foster proper consideration of marginalized actors’ interests, yet risks entrenching the dominance of the well-resourced and powerful. Accordingly, this book proposes a new framework for evaluating the extent to which administrative procedures in the compliance systems of multilateral environmental agreements constrain power and promote regard for the interests of affected states, which are frequently developing and transition countries. This framework is applied to the compliance systems under the Montreal Protocol, the Kyoto Protocol and CITES, which address critical global environmental issues of ozone-layer depletion, climate change and trade in endangered species, respectively. The analysis shows that, under certain conditions, administrative procedures limit the influence of states’ asymmetric power on compliance deliberations. Furthermore, systematic adoption of these procedures increases the opportunities for affected states’ interests to be voiced and considered in compliance decision-making processes.
