Download or read book Report of the Asia Pacific POPIN Consultative Workshop written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) organized the Asia-Pacific POPIN (International Population Information Network) Consultative Workshop from 26 October to 2 November 1988 at Bangkok. The main objectives of the workshop were to introduce and exchange useful technologies and techniques in the areas of information processing, especially computerization and information dissemination, and to consider ways to promote those information-processing technologies and techniques, networking, technical cooperation, and training activities. The goal is to strengthen national population information centers by enabling them to become more self-reliant in their information-processing activities. 2 participants from each of the 13 countries with national population information centers and networks (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Viet Nam) took part in the workshop. The workshop recommended 1) the translation of materials by countries from English into national languages, 2) the continued generation of publications on population and various aspects of population information, 3) greater consideration of readership surveys and evaluations, 4) soliciting information from governmental and non-governmental agencies, 5) the development of computer familiarization courses for mid-level population information officers, 6) in-depth software training for technical-level personnel, 7) training in the use of computers for repackaging and dissemination, 8) training in microcomputer equipment maintenance, 9) organizing country-level POPIN workshops, 10) developing a standardized format for databases, 11) creating directories of population institutions, 12) advising governments on developing policies to minimize the loss of recently trained computer personnel, 13) identifying institutions who can use POPLINE in compact disk read-only memory (CD-ROM) form, 14) promoting the use of non-copyrighted software when possible, 15) continuing to pay attention to the needs of non-computerized national population information centers.

Book excerpt: The Ad Hoc Expert Group Meeting on Integration of Population and Development Policies was held at Bangkok, August 29-September 2, 1988, organized by the Population Division of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). This conference follows the Asia-Pacific Call for Action initiated in 1982. The object of the meeting was to develop methods for review, appraisal and analysis of the interim progress, and to issue guidelines for further implementation of the recommendations. The meeting report is structured into sections on review and appraisal of achievements of the objectives, strategies to strengthen integration of population and each objective, review of current related policies in the member countries, and further recommendations. Each section follows the order of the 5 objectives or strategies: 1) institutional framework; 2) policy formulation and implementation; 3) population data and research; 4) training and manpower development; and 5) monitoring and evaluation. 10 abstracts of papers presented are appended. Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore are close to reaching their population goals of replacement fertility by 2000, but only 3 countries have met health goals of infant mortality

Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.
