Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Acting Committee to the Standing Committee of West India Planters and Merchants: December 1843 By this means parties here, who are interested in the Colonies, might be induced to make immediate arrangements for engaging and conveying a considerable number of these laborers; while they would, before embarkation, be assured of a free passage, and of good employment from the moment of their arrival, without any deduction from their wages. On the other hand, the Colony granting the bounty would be amply compensated by the contribution of their labor, and their open competition for employment, at the end of a short period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Acting Committee to the Standing Committee of West India, Planters and Merchants: 13th January, 1847 Shortly after the meeting of the Standing Com mittee in July last, Parliament determined, by a large majority, to repeal the Corn-laws. Although the discriminating duties on sugar were, in their origin and design, very different from the restric tions upon the importation of corn, -yet, having some analogy, and having long been the object of assiduous misrepresentation, they were so associated in the public mind, that, as soon as the greater ques tion was settled, it became evident that these duties would undergo early revision. It was in anticipa tion of this event that the Acting Committee, in their Report to the half-yearly meeting in March last, expressed their conviction that the Colonies would not be unwilling to encounter extended com petition, if even partially prepared for so formidable a conflict by the immediate concession of those measures which they had a right to claim as preli minary to any further change of policy towards them. No concession, however, was made to pre pare for such a change. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Slavery and the British Country House

Download or read book Slavery and the British Country House written by Madge Dresser and published by Historic England Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British country house has long been regarded as the jewel in the nation's heritage crown. But the country house is also an expression of wealth and power, and as scholars reconsider the nation's colonial past, new questions are being posed about these great houses and their links to Atlantic slavery. This book, authored by a range of academics and heritage professionals, grew out of a 2009 conference on 'Slavery and the British Country house: mapping the current research' organised by English Heritage in partnership with the University of the West of England, the National Trust and the Economic History Society. It asks what links might be established between the wealth derived from slavery and the British country house and what implications such links should have for the way such properties are represented to the public today.Lavishly illustrated and based on the latest scholarship, this wide-ranging and innovative volume provides in-depth examinations of individual houses, regional studies and critical reconsiderations of existing heritage sites, including two studies specially commissioned by English Heritage and one sponsored by the National Trust.

Book The History of Guilford Connecticut Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Guilford Connecticut Classic Reprint written by Ralph Dunning Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Guilford, Connecticut Among the manuscripts left by the late Ralph D. Smith Esq., who had devoted his leisure hours during the last forty years of his life to the study of historical and genealogical subjects, was found an outline sketch of the history of Guilford, written some thirty years ago and doubtless laid aside with the hope of resuming his labors upon it when more abundant materials should have been collected for the purpose. The history of the early settlers of the town was a favorite subject of study. Although not a native, he showed an attachment to it fully equal to that ever shown by any one to the place of his birth. He was thoroughly acquainted with its records and keenly alive to everything that would add to its reputation. Had this historical sketch been filled up and completed by his own hands, it would have undoubtedly compared favorably, in accuracy and completeness, with the history of any town heretofore written. Still it seemed proper to save what he had prepared, even in its incomplete form, as something of great value to the student of local history, and as a foundation upon which future laborers might build a more complete and exhaustive history.
