Download or read book Surviving the Simple Life written by Vera Carolyn Sprouse Snyder and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year was 1920. Women had just won the right to vote due to the efforts of Susan B. Anthony and her resolute followers. In Kansas, axe swinging Carrie Nation and her army of Womens Christian Temperance Union members to which Vera Snyders mother belonged hacked up bars from Wichita to Hayes. The newly elected Republican president, Warren Harding, had just announced that a real danger and threat to the nation would be women voters uniting as a class. Life was certainly not simple for women of that generation. In the little white frame house with four tiny rooms in which Vera grew up in the Arkansas Valley of eastern Colorado, the twenties were not simple and they were also not roaring. Veras mother cooked on a coal stove. The family shared a common dipper from their bucket of drinking water, and a two-holer outhouse and a thundermug inside served their bathroom needs. Winters on the Plains were harsh. Summers were often not much better. Surviving the Simple Life is a fascinating memoir of a time that was hardly the simple life for which Veras granddaughter yearned. It was an era of hardship which women of those days had to deal with and which ultimately provided survivors such as Vera a sense of satisfaction in being able to endure those simple times.
