Book excerpt: Three tankers, the "Hubert Gaucher", the "Le Chene No.1" and the "Lorne No.1" had been laid-up and secured to the dock for some time in the port of Sorel, Quebec. At about 2115 on October 25, 1985, the chief Engineer of the "Le Chene No.1", accompanied by the Chief Engineer of the "Hubert Gaucher" were disembarking from the former vessel and en route to the latter. Whilst using the brow gangway, the Chief Engineer of the "Hubert Guacher" fell between the ship (Le Chene No.1") and the wharf. A search was made for him but, unfortunately, he was not found. The following day, a team of divers hired by the vessels owners found the body lying on the river bed almost under the gangway. An autopsy revealed that death was due to drowning.

Book John Huston s Filmmaking

Download or read book John Huston s Filmmaking written by Lesley Brill and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-10-13 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Huston's Filmmaking offers an analysis of the life and work of one of the greatest American independent filmmakers. Always visually exciting, Huston's films sensitively portray humankind in all its incarnations, chronicling the attempts by protagonists to conceive and articulate their identities. Fundamental questions of selfhood, happiness and love are intimately connected to the idea of home, which for the filmmaker also signified a congenial place among other people in the world. In this study, Lesley Brill shows Huston's films to be far more than formulaic adventures of masculine failure, arguing instead that they demonstrate the close connection between humanity, the natural world, and divinity.

Book The Films of Jean Luc Godard

Download or read book The Films of Jean Luc Godard written by Wheeler Winston Dixon and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1997-03-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important, controversial, and prolific filmmakers in film history, and a founder of French New Wave cinema, Jean-Luc Godard has maintained an unbroken string of films in various genres and mediums from the late 1950s onward. Godard has established a reputation as a rebel who can work within and outside the system, producing films that are creative, breathtakingly beautiful, and yet commercial enough to earn back their production costs. In this book, Wheeler Winston Dixon offers an overview of all of Godard's work as a filmmaker, including his work for television and his ethnographic work in Africa. Free from the jargon and value judgments that have marred much of what has been written about Godard, this is the only book that covers the entirety of Godard's career, from his early film criticism for Cahiers du Cinema to his most recent video/film work. Illustrated with forty-six rare stills and researched in detail, it is the Godard book for the 1990s.

Book The Casablanca Man

Download or read book The Casablanca Man written by Dr James C Robertson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Curtiz (1888-1962) was without doubt one of the most important directors in film history, yet he has never been granted his deserved recognition and no full-scale work on him has previously been published. The Casablanca Man surveys Curtiz' unequalled mastery over a variety of genres which included biography, comedy, horror, melodrama, musicals, swashbucklers and westerns, and looks at his relationship with the Hollywood studio moguls on the basis of unprecedented archive research at Warner Brothers. Concentrating on Curtiz' best-known films - Casablanca, Angels With Dirty Faces, Mildred Pearce and Captain Blood among them - Robertson explores Curtiz' practical creative struggles and his friendships and rivalries with other film celebrities including Errol Flynn, Bette Davis and James Cagney, and his discovery of future stars. Casablanca Man is the first comprehensive critical exploration of Curtiz' entire career and, linking his European work and his subsequent American work into a coherent whole, Robertson firmly re-establishes Curtiz' true standing in the history of cinema.

Book Cinema Eye Cinema Ear

Download or read book Cinema Eye Cinema Ear written by John Russell Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the cinema first began to be taken seriously as an art form, there has been a constant debate on the question: who is the real creator of the film, the writer or the director? This study of a group of key film-makers in the sixties suggests that during this decade there was an emergence of a generation of film-makers who conceived a whole film in their minds just as an architect conceives a whole cathedral or a composer a whole symphony. The book presents detailed critical studies of the work of six commanding figures in the international cinema: four who have made their major reputations since 1950, the Italians Frederico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni, the Frenchman Robert Bresson and the Swede Ingmar Bergman; and two film-makers of an older generation, the Spaniard Luis Bunuel and the Anglo-American Alfred Hitchcock, who have reached the height of their powers and exerted their most important influence on the cinema during the same period. There is also a section on the new talents to emerge more recently in the French 'New Wave', in particular Francois Truffaut, Jen-Luc Godard and Alain Resnais. In addition, the book contains detailed filmographies of the directors discussed.

Book Women Directors and Their Films

Download or read book Women Directors and Their Films written by Mary G. Hurd and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2007 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although women may have found greater film success in the areas of screenwriting, editing, design, and producing, there have been many women whose contributions as directors have been quite significant. In this guide to their careers and films, author Mary Hurd profiles the most noteworthy—from Barbara Kopple and her classic work in the documentary form, to Nora Ephron's insightful retellings of Hollywood's classic stories, to Sophia Coppola's current success in Hollywood. Women Directors and Their Films fills an important gap in the literature on the subject, offering a combination of biographical material and film analysis that effectively summarizes and encapsulates the life's work of these very different, very talented women. The selection includes women of the studio age (Ida Lupino, Dorothy Arzner), contemporary mainstream directors (Amy Heckerling, Nora Ephron), independents (Mary Harron, Nancy Savoca), documentarians (Barbara Kopple), experimental filmmakers (Maya Deren), and an assortment of acclaimed international filmmakers (Jane Campion, Agnes Varda). Profiles of the directors contain both biographical and critical segments. The first, biographical section provides a basic outline of the subject's life and career; the second offers a discussion of the director's films, featuring comments on the narrative, themes, visual techniques and style, and possible critical approaches to the work. Each chapter also includes a complete filmography and brief bibliography.
