Book Collection and Analysis of Seismic Wave Propagation Data

Download or read book Collection and Analysis of Seismic Wave Propagation Data written by David E. Willis and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes one year of theoretical and applied research on propagation of seismic waves and techniques for analyzing data. The main objectives were to determine the frequency and energy of seismic signatures, and investigate attenuation, patterns of azimuthal radiation from source regions, and methods of determining the type of motion at the source. Natural and artificial sources were studied to develop diagnostic aids for distinguishing between earthquakes and underground nuclear detonations. Equipment for selection, reformatting, and digital-to-analog conversion for digitally recorded LASA data was constructed and is being checked out. Several approaches for using the parallel computational capabilities of optics for LASA data were developed. A study of background noise and reciprocity for teleseismic events as recorded on the bottom of a large fresh water lake has commenced with the emplacement of three-component seismometers in Lake Superior. Array data have been used for crustal studies on the Eastern United States. Digital mode filtering was investigated. A perturbation theory for seismic sources was developed. (Author).

Book Proceedings of the Workshop on Seismic Propagation in Shallow Water Held on 6 7 July 1978 at Office of Naval Research Arlington Virginia

Download or read book Proceedings of the Workshop on Seismic Propagation in Shallow Water Held on 6 7 July 1978 at Office of Naval Research Arlington Virginia written by OFFICE OF NAVAL RESEARCH ARLINGTON VA. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop considered seismic propagation in the continental margin (e.g., water depths of 200m or less). When an acoustic signal is radiated into water, a certain amount of the energy is coupled with the bottom and may be measurable as a seismic signal. There are indications that a horizontally oriented geophone may provide better signal to noise ratio in shallow water than a hydrophone measuring the same signal. The workshop was not technology oriented but was designed to explore some of the physical processes involved with seismic propagation. The conventional acoustic methods for detection of submarines at long range lose their attractiveness in shallow water where acoustic energy is rapidly attenuated through interactions with the surface and bottom and its coherence is similarly lost. A substantial part of the world's oceans can be classified as shallow water, including such important areas as the North Sea, East Coast of the Americas, etc.). One possible alternative to acoustic surveillance may be seismic surveillance.

Book Advanced Research Projects Agency ARPA Seismic Coupling Conference Held at Institute for Defense Analyses Arlington Virginia June 8 9 1970

Download or read book Advanced Research Projects Agency ARPA Seismic Coupling Conference Held at Institute for Defense Analyses Arlington Virginia June 8 9 1970 written by BATTELLE COLUMBUS LABS OHIO. and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference and a subsequent one in August 1970 were held to foster communication among the diverse disciplines required to predict the shock effects from nuclear explosions out to teleseismic distances. These disciplines involve the use of rock mechanics, geology, nuclear physics, computer hardware and codes, seismology, and field instrumentation. Results from the conferences included (a) improvement in the communication links between the engineers and scientists engaged in research relevant to the seismic coupling problems, and (b) identification of open circuits at some points along the communication lines. The report presents the June 1970 conference proceedings and a summary paper on the results of both conferences. (Author).

Book Alternatives for Landmine Detection

Download or read book Alternatives for Landmine Detection written by Jacqueline MacDonald Gibson and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2003 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the rate that government and nongovernmental organizations are clearing existing landmines, it will take 450-500 years to rid the world of them. Concerned about the slow pace of demining, the Office of Science and Technology asked RAND to assess potential innovative technologies being explored and to project what funding would be required to foster the development of the more promising ones. The authors of this report suggest that the federal government undertake a research and development effort to develop a multisensor mine detection system over the next five to eight years.

Book Assessing the People s Liberation Army in the Hu Jintao Era

Download or read book Assessing the People s Liberation Army in the Hu Jintao Era written by Roy Kamphausen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-06-14 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is my pleasure to introduce this 2013 publication by the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) of the U.S. Army War College, the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), and the United States Pacific Command, focusing on A Retrospective of the People's Liberation Army in the Hu Jintao Era (2002-12). The papers in this book provide a valuable and insightful review of the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) many impressive advances over the past decade. Solid scholarship on changes taking place in the PLA helps us understand how the Chinese view the employment of military power to support broader policy aims. A historical review of patterns and developments in training, operations, acquisitions, and political military relations can greatly assist that understanding. The outstanding work in this jointly sponsored study is an important contribution toward this end. This volume provides unique insights into the PLA's achievements over the span of Hu Jintao's tenure...
