Download or read book Local Integrity Systems written by L. W. Huberts and published by Boom Juridische. This book was released on 2008 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first international comparative study of local integrity systems, paying attention to the policies, practices, and actors at the local government level that aim to fight corruption and safeguard integrity. It provides critical up-to-date reports of the local integrity systems in seven world cities - Sydney/New South Wales, New York, Hong Kong, London, Hamburg, Amsterdam, and Antwerp. For each city, a description of the integrity system is given by the head of the key integrity agency, followed by an evaluation by an ethics researcher who is familiar with the city's integrity system. In the introductory chapter, an overview is provided of relevant ethics and integrity institutions and policies at the national and international level. The final chapter presents a cross-city comparison of the results, proposes a framework for analysis and assessment of local integrity systems, and provides an ambitious outline for future research and practice. With its unique combination of theory and practice, Local Integrity Systems will appeal to academics and practitioners in the area of ethics and integrity in local government.

Download or read book Making Of An Economic Superpower The Unlocking China s Secret Of Rapid Industrialization written by Yi Wen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of China is no doubt one of the most important events in world economic history since the Industrial Revolution. Mainstream economics, especially the institutional theory of economic development based on a dichotomy of extractive vs. inclusive political institutions, is highly inadequate in explaining China's rise. This book argues that only a radical reinterpretation of the history of the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the West (as incorrectly portrayed by the institutional theory) can fully explain China's growth miracle and why the determined rise of China is unstoppable despite its current 'backward' financial system and political institutions. Conversely, China's spectacular and rapid transformation from an impoverished agrarian society to a formidable industrial superpower sheds considerable light on the fundamental shortcomings of the institutional theory and mainstream 'blackboard' economic models, and provides more-accurate reevaluations of historical episodes such as Africa's enduring poverty trap despite radical political and economic reforms, Latin America's lost decades and frequent debt crises, 19th century Europe's great escape from the Malthusian trap, and the Industrial Revolution itself.
Download or read book The Role of Parliament in Curbing Corruption written by Rick Stapenhurst and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most countries, parliament has the constitutional mandate to both oversee government and to hold government to account; often, audit institutions, ombuds and anti-corruption agencies report to parliament, as a means of ensuring both their independence from government and reinforcing parliament's position at the apex of accountability institutions. At the same time, parliaments can also play a key role in promoting accountability, through constituency outreach, public hearings, and parliamentary commissions. This title will be of interest to parliamentarians and parliamentary staff, development practitioners, students of development and those interested in curbing corruption and improving governance in developing and developed countries alike.

Download or read book Transporting Atlanta written by Miriam Konrad and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2010-07-02 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's worsening nightmare of gridlock is given full attention in this illuminating study of the transportation crisis in Atlanta. Inconveniences and hardships created by too many automobiles and too few alternatives for movement have reached untenable levels. Miriam Konrad investigates three major transportation projects involving public transit and use of space issues in the Atlanta area: the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), the bus and rail system that has been the backbone of metropolitan Atlanta's public transportation system for the past thirty years; the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA), a superagency created in 1999 to address air quality issues in the region; and the Belt Line, a popular proposal to build a twenty-two-mile loop of greenspace, transit, and other amenities around an inner loop of the city on existing rail beds. She reveals how gridlock, over regional transportation policy and procedures, has emerged out of the competition between growth promoters, environmentalists, and social justice actors.
Download or read book Restorative Justice Responsive Regulation written by John Braithwaite and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Braithwaite's argument against punitive justice systems and for restorative justice systems establishes that there are good theoretical and empirical grounds for anticipating that well designed restorative justice processes will restore victims, offenders, and communities better than existing criminal justice practices. Counterintuitively, he also shows that a restorative justice system may deter, incapacitate, and rehabilitate more effectively than a punitive system. This is particularly true when the restorative justice system is embedded in a responsive regulatory framework that opts for deterrence only after restoration repeatedly fails, and incapacitation only after escalated deterrence fails. Braithwaite's empirical research demonstrates that active deterrence under the dynamic regulatory pyramid that is a hallmark of the restorative justice system he supports, is far more effective than the passive deterrence that is notable in the stricter "sentencing grid" of current criminal justice systems.
