Book Report for Dedicated JPSS VIIRS Ocean Color Calibration Validation Cruise October 2016

Download or read book Report for Dedicated JPSS VIIRS Ocean Color Calibration Validation Cruise October 2016 written by Michael Ondrusek and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The overall aim of this NOAA VIIRS 2015 Ocean Color Calibration/Validation (Cal/Val) Cruise aboard the NOAA Ship Nancy Foster (NF-15-13) was the collection of high quality in situ optical and related biogeochemical data for purpose of validating of satellite ocean color radiometry and derived products from VIIRS-SNPP, part of the JPSS program [Wang et al., 2013; Wang et al., 2014]. A second aim was to make measurements in support of science and applied studies that seek to characterize the optical signatures of the variety of water masses encountered (i.e., coastal, near-shore, cross-shelf, eddies, fronts, filaments, blue water, etc.). Thirdly, the design of the sampling strategies will lead to quantifying the confidence intervals of these measurements. Together, the validation of radiometry, the optical signatures of water types and the quantification of uncertainties, will lead to improvements in the extent and accuracy of satellite derived observations of the near surface ocean environment (...) The cruise data collection will be deposited at NOAA CoastWatch/OceanWatch and made available for convenient access to the ocean community. Data will be formally archived through NOAA/NESDIS National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) as required by NOAA"--Page 1. [doi:10.7289/V5/TR-NESDIS-148].

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this cruise aboard the NOAA Ship Nancy Foster was to collect in situ optical and ancillary data for validation of JPSS VIIRS satellite ocean color radiometry and derived products [Wang et al., 2013; Wang et al., 2014]. Specific objectives are detailed below in Section 3. The project interval was 9 to 22 November 2014. This 14-day interval included 10 days at sea (including transits), 2 staging days, 1 de-staging day and 1 day crew rest. Days at sea were 11 to 20 November 2014. Ship time aboard the NOAA Ship Nancy Foster (http://www.moc.noaa.gov/nf/) was funded through an allocation by the NOAA Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO). Ten investigator groups from 11 institutions participated in the cruise... The cruise departed from and returned to Charleston, SC, USA, the Foster's home port. The primary area of operations was the Western Atlantic along the U.S. Mid- and Southeastern Coast, including cross-shelf, Gulf Stream and blue waters"--Page 1. Book Fiducial Reference Measurements for Satellite Ocean Colour

Download or read book Fiducial Reference Measurements for Satellite Ocean Colour written by Andrew Clive Banks and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean color measured by satellite-mounted optical sensors is an essential climate variable that is routinely used as a central element for assessing the health and productivity of marine ecosystems and the role of oceans in the global carbon cycle. For satellite ocean color to be reliable and used in these and other important environmental applications, the data must be trustworthy and high quality. Pre-flight and on-board calibration of satellite ocean color sensors is conducted; however, once in orbit, the data quality can only be fully assessed via independent calibration and validation activities using surface measurements. These measurements therefore need to be at least as high quality as the satellite data, which necessitates SI traceability and a full uncertainty budget. This is the basis for fiducial reference measurements (FRMs) and the FRM4SOC project, which was an European Space Agency (ESA) initiative to establish and maintain SI-traceable ground-based FRM for satellite ocean color, thus providing a fundamental contribution to the European system for monitoring the Earth (Copernicus). This Special Issue of MDPI Remote Sensing is designed to showcase this essential Earth observation work through the publication of the project's main achievements and results accompanied by other select relevant articles.

Book Thriving on Our Changing Planet A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space

Download or read book Thriving on Our Changing Planet A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live on a dynamic Earth shaped by both natural processes and the impacts of humans on their environment. It is in our collective interest to observe and understand our planet, and to predict future behavior to the extent possible, in order to effectively manage resources, successfully respond to threats from natural and human-induced environmental change, and capitalize on the opportunities â€" social, economic, security, and more â€" that such knowledge can bring. By continuously monitoring and exploring Earth, developing a deep understanding of its evolving behavior, and characterizing the processes that shape and reshape the environment in which we live, we not only advance knowledge and basic discovery about our planet, but we further develop the foundation upon which benefits to society are built. Thriving on Our Changing Planet: A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space (National Academies Press, 2018) provides detailed guidance on how relevant federal agencies can ensure that the United States receives the maximum benefit from its investments in Earth observations from space, while operating within realistic cost constraints. This short booklet, designed to be accessible to the general public, provides a summary of the key ideas and recommendations from the full decadal survey report.

Book The Alaskan Beaufort Sea

This text then examines the subsynoptic meteorological networks along the Beaufort Sea coast and shelf. Other chapters consider the thermally generated mesoscale effects on surface winds and the orographic mesoscale effects on surface winds. This book discusses as well the phytoplankton associations and relative phytoplankton production in the area between the 20-m depth contour and the edge of the ice in summer. The final chapter deals with the characteristics of the ice cover and oil-ice interactions that will affect cleanup activities after blowout. This book is a valuable resource for scientists and conservationists.

Book Stereographic Projection Technique

Download or read book Stereographic Projection Technique written by P R LEYSHON and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 1996 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to provide a simple introduction to the subject by means of illustrations and exercises, encouraging the student to visualise the problems concerned in three dimensions. Once an appreciation is gained of the nature of the problem, the formal solution using the projection becomes both logical and straightforward. The stereographic projection is an essential tool of the structural geologist which allows three-dimensional orientation data to be both represented and manipulated. It provides a way of graphically displaying the data collected. This is essential for the recognition and interpretation of patterns of preferred orientation. 'This is the book all teachers of stereographic projections have been waiting for! It is 115 pages of well-presented, clearly explained, generally well-illustrated text - in short it is user-friendly.' - Episodes - Int. Geoscience Newsmagazine, April 1996
