Book Reorienting the 19th Century

Download or read book Reorienting the 19th Century written by Andre Gunder Frank and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andre Gunder Frank was a path-breaking scholar in several disciplines over an illustrious and contentious 50-year career. First amongst his many important works is the book ReORIENT: Global Economy in the Asian Age, which sought to correct a Euro-centric world view of the development of the global political economy. Frank passed away in April 2005 while working on this new book, a sequel to ReORIENT. In this book Frank shows many of the myths of European industrialisation, hegemony and capitalism which have hidden the fact that Asia remained a serious power not just into the 18th century, as Frank himself argued in 1998, but well into the 19th century as well. When Frank passed away his colleagues rallied to finish this book and it is presented here as his final major statement.

Book ReOrienting Histories of Medicine

Download or read book ReOrienting Histories of Medicine written by Ronit Yoeli-Tlalim and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is rarely appreciated how much of the history of Eurasian medicine in the premodern period hinges on cross-cultural interactions and knowledge transmissions. Using manuscripts found in key Eurasian nodes of the medieval world – Dunhuang, Kucha, the Cairo Genizah and Tabriz – the book analyses a number of case-studies of Eurasian medical encounters, giving a voice to places, languages, people and narratives which were once prominent but have gone silent. This is an important book for those interested in the history of medicine and the transmissions of knowledge that have taken place over the course of global history.

Book Reorienting Economics

Download or read book Reorienting Economics written by Tony Lawson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary economics is characterized by a mismatch between its methods of analysis and the nature of the world it seeks to interpret. Despite regular economic crises and ongoing critique of the discipline, the drift from political economy into applied mathematics appears to continue unabated. In this book, Tony Lawson advocates a relignment of economics with social reality. In analyzing mainstream economists' misplaced universality, the author places ontology at the heart of a reoriented future in which economics is integrated within the wider human and social sciences.

Book The Rise of the West

    Book Details:
  • Author : William H. McNeill
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2009-07-30
  • ISBN : 0226561615
  • Pages : 866 pages

Download or read book The Rise of the West written by William H. McNeill and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise of the West, winner of the National Book Award for history in 1964, is famous for its ambitious scope and intellectual rigor. In it, McNeill challenges the Spengler-Toynbee view that a number of separate civilizations pursued essentially independent careers, and argues instead that human cultures interacted at every stage of their history. The author suggests that from the Neolithic beginnings of grain agriculture to the present major social changes in all parts of the world were triggered by new or newly important foreign stimuli, and he presents a persuasive narrative of world history to support this claim. In a retrospective essay titled "The Rise of the West after Twenty-five Years," McNeill shows how his book was shaped by the time and place in which it was written (1954-63). He discusses how historiography subsequently developed and suggests how his portrait of the world's past in The Rise of the West should be revised to reflect these changes. "This is not only the most learned and the most intelligent, it is also the most stimulating and fascinating book that has ever set out to recount and explain the whole history of mankind. . . . To read it is a great experience. It leaves echoes to reverberate, and seeds to germinate in the mind."—H. R. Trevor-Roper, New York Times Book Review

Book Seeking the Straight and Narrow

Download or read book Seeking the Straight and Narrow written by Lynne Gerber and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Losing weight and changing your sexual orientation are both notoriously difficult to do successfully. Yet many faithful evangelical Christians believe that thinness and heterosexuality are godly ideals—and that God will provide reliable paths toward them for those who fall short. Seeking the Straight and Narrow is a fascinating account of the world of evangelical efforts to alter our strongest bodily desires. Drawing on fieldwork at First Place, a popular Christian weight-loss program, and Exodus International, a network of ex-gay ministries, Lynne Gerber explores why some Christians feel that being fat or gay offends God, what exactly they do to lose weight or go straight, and how they make sense of the program’s results—or, frequently, their lack. Gerber notes the differences and striking parallels between the two programs, and, more broadly, she traces the ways that other social institutions have attempted to contain the excesses associated with fatness and homosexuality. Challenging narratives that place evangelicals in constant opposition to dominant American values, Gerber shows that these programs reflect the often overlooked connection between American cultural obsessions and Christian ones.

Book Reorienting Global Communication

Download or read book Reorienting Global Communication written by Michael Curtin and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing the global nature of Indian and Chinese film, television, and digital media, Reorienting Global Communication: Indian and Chinese Media Beyond Borders provides a diverse mix of alternative perspectives that collectively shift the discussion of media globalization away from Hollywood and New York. Linked by a shared history of colonialism, state socialism, large diasporas, and recent market liberalization, India and China are poised to become twenty-first-century world powers. While both enjoy a rich ensemble of religious iconography, legends, and folk traditions, Indian and Chinese producers and consumers are today challenged to find modes of expression that are culturally authentic and commercially viable in an increasingly globalized media environment. Essays cover topics such as the influence of transnational Indian families on the narrative elements of Bollywood productions, the rise of made-in-China blockbusters, the development of pan-Asian cinema, and migrants' use of the Internet to maintain connections with their homelands. Contributors are Michael Curtin, Chua Beng Huat, Shanti Kumar, Chin-Chuan Lee, Madhavi Mallapragada, Divya C. McMillin, Sreya Mitra, Sujata Moorti, Zhongdang Pan, Aswin Punathambekar, Jack Linchuan Qiu, Hemant Shah, Lakshmi Srinivas, Emilie Yueh-yu Yeh, and Yuezhi Zhao.
