Water Reuse presents a portfolio of treatment options available to mitigate water quality issues in reclaimed water along with new analysis suggesting that the risk of exposure to certain microbial and chemical contaminants from drinking reclaimed water does not appear to be any higher than the risk experienced in at least some current drinking water treatment systems, and may be orders of magnitude lower. This report recommends adjustments to the federal regulatory framework that could enhance public health protection for both planned and unplanned (or de facto) reuse and increase public confidence in water reuse.

Book excerpt: A research system was designed and installed at the Apple Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant, two miles south of Rosemount, Minnesota, to develop agricultural management practices for removal of nitrogen from municipal wastewater effluent. A solid set irrigation system was designed and installed to apply wastewater effluent to 12 test blocks, each measuring 60x150 ft. A perforated plastic drainage tile was placed lengthwise in each block at a depth equivalent to the normal water table level and opening at one end of the block into a sampling station. Six blocks were planted to corn and six planted to eight species of forages. The effluent was applied at rates up to 15 ft/yr. This report presents the engineering considerations in the design of a solid set irrigation system and drain tile and monitoring system for evaluating the influence of the effluent application and agronomic practices on drainage waters.
