It provides statistical evidence on an evolving market and highlights good practice as well as those areas where more work is needed. There is potential for biofuels to play a useful role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions without causing substanial environmental damage. However this is unlikely to be achieved without careful planning and regulation.

Book Renewable Fuels Agency 2008 09 annual report to Parliament on the renewable transport fuel obligation

Download or read book Renewable Fuels Agency 2008 09 annual report to Parliament on the renewable transport fuel obligation written by Renewable Fuels Agency and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2008/09, the first year of operation, the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) met its objective of driving a market for biofuels in the UK. 2.7% of the UK's total road transport fuel supply was biofuel which was slightly over the Government's target of 2.5% and is more than twice the supply of biofuel in 2007/08/. No obligated suppliers pad to 'buy-out' of their obligations. The performance of suppliers in sourcing sustainable fuels was polarised. Whilst several companies met all three of the Government sourcing targets with fully verified data a number also performed poorly. Overall a significant improvement will be required to meet the challenges of the forthcoming EU Renewable Energy Directive. In 2008/09 there was also a 46% carbon saving against the Government target of 40%. The biofuels market has not as yet had a large impact on agriculture in the UK and although an effective driver of the market for biofuel, the RTFO did not, during 2008/09, drive increases in the biofuel production capacity in the UK.

Book Low carbon Energy Controversies

Download or read book Low carbon Energy Controversies written by Thomas Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments, big business and communities are coming under increased pressure to develop low carbon energy supply technologies. However, public opposition to the development of the siting and implementation of the technology associated infrastructure often complicates progress. This is sometimes labelled the 'not in my backyard' or NIMBY attitude - an unhelpful tag as conflicts over new development between governments, local authorities, business and communities are generally far more complex than NIMBY theory implies. Furthermore, within the context of the climate change debate a delicate balance has to be reached between local environmental protection and our need for reliable low carbon energy. This comprehensive book builds on over 10 years of research conducted by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and uses a range of case studies from carbon capture and storage to on-shore wind farms to explore the complex nature of disputes between a wide variety of stakeholder groups. Topics covered include the importance of context, the relationship between risk and trust, sense of place and the role of the media. An invaluable resource for researchers and readers in local or national government, industry or community groups who wish to deepen their understanding of controversy around low carbon technology and how to overcome it.

Book excerpt: Renewable fuels, in the present times, have become important to curb emission of greenhouse gases, which are causing damage to the environment and leading to climatic changes. Ideally, their utilization can be a zero carbon operation. Planting suitable trees on all waste lands and agro forestry on a large scale can fulfil the needs of timber, fuel, fruits, etc. All kinds of lignocellulosic biomass can be converted by several methods to useful liquid fuels like alcohols, biodiesel, methane, renewable diesel and renewable gasoline. Hydrogen can be used as a renewable fuel because of its desirable characteristics and properties for its use as a green fuel.

Book Environmental and Energy Law

Download or read book Environmental and Energy Law written by Karen Makuch and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-07-23 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite bringing prosperity, industrialisation generally leads to increasing levels of pollution which has a detrimental impact on the environment. In response, legislation which seeks to control or prevent such impact has become common. Similarly, climate change and energy security have become major drivers for the regulatory regimes that have emerged in the energy field. Given the global or regional scope of many environmental problems, international cooperation is often necessary to ensure such legislation is effective. The EU and the UK have contributed to the development of the environmental and energy law regimes currently in force, spanning across international, transnational and national levels. At the same time, practical responses to environmental and energy problems have largely been the focus of engineers, scientists and other technical experts. Environmental & Energy Law attempts to bridge the knowledge gap between legal developments designed to achieve environmental and/or energy-related objectives and the practical, scientific and technical considerations applicable to the same environmental problems. In particular, it attempts to convey a broad range of topical issues in environmental and energy law, from climate and energy regulation, technology innovation and transfer, to pollution control, environmental governance and enforcement. In addition the book outlines key sector specific legal regimes (including water, waste and air quality management), focusing on issues or topics that are particularly relevant to both environmental and energy lawyers, and engineering, science and technology-oriented professionals and students. In this vein, the book guides the reader on some basic practical applications of the law within scientific, engineering and other practical settings. The book will be useful to all those working or studying in the environmental or energy arena, including law students, legal professionals, engineering and science students and professionals. By adopting a multi-disciplinary approach to environmental and energy law, the book embraces all readerships and helps to address the often thorny problem of communication between scientists, engineers, lawyers and policy-makers.

Book Energy and Transport in Green Transition

Download or read book Energy and Transport in Green Transition written by Atle Midttun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book breaks new ground in the studies of green transition. It frames the ongoing transformation in terms of a "battle of modernities" with the emerging vision of ecomodernity as the final destination. It also offers a systematic exploration of the potential for extensive transformation of carbon-intensive sectors – with a focus on energy and transport – towards a low or post-carbon economy. The book does so in a comparative perspective, by pointing to a diversity of techno-economic and institutional solutions in the mature Western economies, and in the rapidly growing East and developing South. The contributors highlight a broad spectrum of available alternatives as well as illuminate conflicting interests involved. They also demonstrate how solutions to the climate challenge require parallel technological and governance innovation. The book advocates a new, overarching vision and agenda of ecomodernity – based on a synergistic paradigm-shift in industry, politics and culture – to trigger and sustain the ecological innovation necessary to tip development in a green direction. This vision cannot be monolithic; rather, it should reflect the diverse interests and conditions of the global population. This book is aimed at researchers and postgraduate students of energy, transport, environmental and climate policies, as well as development, environment, innovation and sustainability.
