Book Renascence and Other Poems Esprios Classics

Download or read book Renascence and Other Poems Esprios Classics written by Edna St Vincent Millay and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2021-01-23 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edna St. Vincent Millay (February 22, 1892 - October 19, 1950) was an American lyrical poet and playwright. Encouraged to read the classics at home, she was too rebellious to make a success of formal education, but she won poetry prizes from an early age, including the Pulitzer Prize in 1923, and went on to use verse as a medium for her feminist activism. She also wrote verse-dramas and a highly-praised opera The King's Henchman. Her novels appeared under the name Nancy Boyd, and she refused lucrative offers to publish them under her own name. Millay was a prominent social figure of New York City's Greenwich Village, just as it was becoming known as a bohemian writer's colony.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Er of Pamphylia and Other Poems Er of Pamphylia Canto I I Had been musing on that antique Myth Wherein great Plato, fain to justify Man's hope of immortality to man, From the frail raft of proof and argument Took refuge at the last; as who might say, I who have spurned outworn Authority, And leaned upon Philosophy alone, Am baffled here; yet, for my parting gift, Take ye this tale; I tell it with a smile Akin to tears, and telling, do but bid The good man hope on, and the bad beware. Then flew my thoughts to that stern Florentine Who wrought the Comedy well called Divine, That Epic of the Afterworld, triune As was the Godhead whom his Church revealed, Hell, Purgatory, Heaven, one Universe, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Vigil of Venus and Other Poems

Download or read book The Vigil of Venus and Other Poems written by LIGHTNING SOURCE INC and published by Tebbo. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vigil Of Venus And Other Poems - The Original Classic Edition This is a high quality book of the original classic edition. This is a freshly published edition of this culturally important work, which is now, at last, again available to you. Enjoy this classic work. These few paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside: Here and there the texts become quite silly, separately or in consent; and just where they agree in the most surprising way-i.e. in the arrangement of the lines-the conjectural emendator is invited to do his worst by a note at the head of the older Codex, Sunt vero versus xxii-There are rightly twenty-two lines. ...With a poem of paratactic structure the best of us may easily go astray by transposing lines, or blocks of lines, to correspond with our sequence of thought; and I shall be content if, following the only texts to which appeal can be made, [1] my translation be generally intelligible. ...That knave, now-he with the red nose and the black eye-the Dukes colours, loyal man!-you clap an iron on his leg, and ask him why he is not down in the city, hanging them out of window! ...But that day, rather, I clenched my nails over an inward wound: For that a something manlier than my years- Look, bearing, what-not-by the Duke not missd, Condemned me to promotion: I must bide At home, command the Guard! ...Your Highness will not know me-Zia Agnese, Giovannuccis wife that was; And feed a two-three cows, as a widow may, On the marshes where the grass is salt and sweet As your Highness knows-and always true to pail Until this Nicolo.

Book L Allegro Il Penseroso Comus and Lycidas Esprios Classics

Download or read book L Allegro Il Penseroso Comus and Lycidas Esprios Classics written by John Milton and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-07 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Il Penseroso (The Serious Man) is a vision of poetic melancholy by John Milton, first found in the 1645/1646 quarto of verses The Poems of Mr. John Milton, both English and Latin, published by Humphrey Moseley. It was presented as a companion piece to L'Allegro, a vision of poetic mirth. The speaker of this reflective ode dispels "vain deluding Joys" from his mind in a ten-line prelude, before invoking "divinest Melancholy" to inspire his future verses. The melancholic mood is idealised by the speaker as a means by which to "attain / To something like prophetic strain," and for the central action of Il Penseroso - which, like L'Allegro, proceeds in couplets of iambic tetrameter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ad Matrem, and Other Poems Ad Matrem O Christ, you left not even Cynthia. The stars are empty now, Their gods and goddesses are gone. In leafy glade, on shadowy hillside are No longer nymphs at play, Thy sorrow-saddened brow, The tree you died upon, Frightened those happy ones away. Bacchus' exulting crew, Scorned, fell back from you; White Aphrodite withered to wan foam. What hast thou brought instead? All men could pour the lustral, pleading wine And bear a gift to Hercules' great shrine; Or love, forget and rove In Cybele's dim grove. All maids could follow where Adonis led, In verdant meadows plumed with iris roam, And laugh and dance and sing Prinked out with buds of Spring. Calm priests could slay a lowing hecatomb; Youths look with wistful eye, That longed and might espy A sweet form glide into her fountain home; Or hear the quick-drawn breathing of a race And turn to meet the glory of Apollo's race.
