Book excerpt: In this book, I present a set of papers that I participated in as a single and main author, which were in the field of remote sensing (RS) of Kuwait environment. Here, RS applications vary in physical geography fields as following: geomorphology, climatology, biogeography, oceanography. Specifically: urban air pollution, marine biogeography, coastal geomorphology and oceanography. Through this research, I hope to increase our understanding of the natural environment of the State of Kuwait and the issues it suffers from a different perspective from space. The State of Kuwait is located in the northeast of the Arabian Peninsula, where it is bordered by Iraq in the north and Saudi Arabia in the west and south. It is located between latitudes 28° 30’ and 30° 05’ North, and longitude 47° 30’ and 48° 36’ East. The results of these studies will help decision-makers in Kuwait to protect the environment and develop appropriate legislation to achieve green and blue sustainability. I also hope to high-light the importance of this technology in the environmental studies and invest in it as one of the most important modern technology in monitoring, understanding and protecting the natural environment. Finally, I present this knowledge to you as an indication of what contemporary geographers. Hope of making better use of the specialists in this field. Remote sensing is the science of extracting data and information from space without touching using the reflected and emitted radiation from the sun. This extraction and detection could be done by satellite in a term of images, or drone in a term of photos. The extracted data from the sensors have to be processed and analysed using specialized geographic information system and remote sensing software.

Several international companies and scientific organisations were involved in extinguishing the fires and in assessing the impact of this major environmental incursion. Kuwaiti Oil Fires: Regional Environmental Perspectives summarises these effects. The topics covered include the application of remote sensing techniques to determine the location of wells on fire and plume movement; air quality and particulate monitoring by ground stations and aircraft measurements; organic and inorganic constituents in the air; use of modeling techniques to study dispersion characteristics of pollutants and deposition of soot; and the efforts by the fire fighters in extinguishing fires and capping the wells. A brief overview of the causes of the crisis and the role of regional and international groups in resolving the dispute is presented as well as some basic and useful statistics of the region covering general information on economic aspects and exploitation of oil resources in both Iraq and Kuwait. Problems faced by the fire fighting teams, the preparations made to overcome the problems, and technology used in extinguishing the well fires are also discussed. We are privileged to publish new research findings that are summarized here in Chapter 38 from extensive and detailed work conducted in the Kyzyl Kum, and Karakum sand seas of Central Asia. There is a strong belief that further study of the little-known past such as revealed in this study could unlock clues as to what a future Earth might look like. This leads on to speculation in Chapter 39 about the implications of what we already know about global change (not only climate change) and the impact of the Anthropocene on the dune systems, both inland and coastal. Sea level rise, marine incursions and an increase in extreme weather events will affect dune systems and sand seas on the Northern Hemisphere (and beyond).

This creates a need for more research on current disposal methods such as landfills, incineration, chemical and effluent treatment as well as recycling, waste incineration, clean technologies, waste monitoring, public and corporate awareness, and general education. Waste Management is one of the key problems of modern society due to the ever expanding volume and complexity of discarded domestic and industrial waste. Unfortunately many of the policies adopted in the past were aimed at short term solutions without due regard to the long term implications on health and the environment, leading in many cases to the need to take difficult and expensive remedial action. The desired direction of waste management is towards sustainable strategies. The approach which has emerged as the most sustainable strategy has been called 3Rs, where reduction, reuse and recycling, in this order, are seen as the best actions. Recently recovery is added as the fourth action (4Rs) applied in order to; for example, recover energy from waste that cannot be classified under the 3Rs. This largely decreases the volume of the waste that needs final disposal. Further steps are required towards improvement of current technologies, increased collaboration between the public, government and private sectors and increased involvement of all stakeholders.
