Book An Update on Remote Measurement of Soil Moisture Over Vegetation Using Infrared Temperature Measurements

Download or read book An Update on Remote Measurement of Soil Moisture Over Vegetation Using Infrared Temperature Measurements written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using model development, image analysis and micrometeorological measurements, the object is to push beyond the present limitations of using the infrared temperature method for remotely determining surface energy fluxes and soil moisture over vegetation. Model development consists of three aspects: (1) a more complex vegetation formulation which is more flexible and realistic; (2) a method for modeling the fluxes over patchy vegetation cover; and (3) a method for inferring a two-layer soil vertical moisture gradient from analyses of horizontal variations in surface temperatures. HAPEX and FIFE satellite data will be used along with aircraft thermal infrared and solar images as input for the models. To test the models, moisture availability and bulk canopy resistances will be calculated from data collected locally at the Rock Springs experimental field site and, eventually, from the FIFE project. Book Remote Sensing of Energy Fluxes and Soil Moisture Content

Download or read book Remote Sensing of Energy Fluxes and Soil Moisture Content written by George P. Petropoulos and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating decades of research conducted by leading scientists in the field, Remote Sensing of Energy Fluxes and Soil Moisture Content provides an overview of state-of-the-art methods and modeling techniques employed for deriving spatio-temporal estimates of energy fluxes and soil surface moisture from remote sensing. It also underscores the range of such techniques available nowadays as well as the operationally distributed networks that provide today in-situ validated relevant observations. The book brings together three types of articles: Comprehensive reviews that examine the developments in concepts, methods, and techniques employed in deriving land surface heat fluxes as well as soil surface moisture on field, regional, and large scales, paying particular emphasis to the techniques exploiting Earth Observation (EO) technology Detailed insights into the principles and operation of the most widely applied approaches for the quantification and analysis of surface fluxes and soil moisture with case studies that directly show the great applicability of remote sensing in this field, or articles discussing specific issues in the retrievals of those parameters from space Focused articles integrating current knowledge and scientific understanding in the remote sensing of energy fluxes and soil moisture, that are highlighting the main issues, challenges, and future prospects of this emerging technology. Designed with different users in mind, the book is organized in four more or less independent units that make specific information easy to find. It presents a discussion on the future trends and prospects, underlying the scientific challenges that need to be addressed adequately in order to derive more accurate estimates of those parameters from space.

Book Remote Sensing of Evapotranspiration ET

Download or read book Remote Sensing of Evapotranspiration ET written by Pradeep Wagle and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-10-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evapotranspiration (ET) is a critical component of the water and energy balances, and the number of remote sensing-based ET products and estimation methods has increased in recent years. Various aspects of remote sensing of ET are reported in the 11 papers published in this book. The major research areas covered by this book include inter-comparison and performance evaluation of widely used one- and two-source energy balance models, a new dual-source model (Soil Plant Atmosphere and Remote Sensing Evapotranspiration, SPARSE), and a process-based model (ETMonitor); assessment of multi-source (e.g., remote sensing, reanalysis, and land surface model) ET products; development or improvement of data fusion frameworks to predict continuous daily ET at a high spatial resolution (field-scale or 30 m) by fusing the advanced spaceborne thermal emission reflectance radiometer (ASTER), the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Landsat data; and investigating uncertainties in ET estimates using an ET ensemble composed of several land surface models and diagnostic datasets. The effects of the differences between ET products on water resources and ecosystem management were also investigated. More accurate ET estimates and improved understanding of remotely sensed ET products are crucial for maximizing crop productivity while minimizing water losses and management costs.

Book Measurement of Evapotranspiration with Combined Reflective and Thermal Infrared Radiance Observations

Download or read book Measurement of Evapotranspiration with Combined Reflective and Thermal Infrared Radiance Observations written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-11-18 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad goal of the research summarized in this report was 'To facilitate the evaluation of regional evapotranspiration (ET) through the combined use of solar reflective and thermal infrared radiance observations.' The specific objectives stated by Goward and Hope (1986) were to: (1) investigate the nature of the relationship between surface temperature (T(sub S)) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and develop an understanding of this relationship in terms of energy exchange processes, particularly latent flux heat (LE); (2) develop procedures to estimate large area LE using combined T(sub S) and NDVI observations obtained from AVHRR data; and (3) determine whether measurements derived from satellite observations relate directly to measurements made at the surface or from aircraft platforms. Both empirical and modeling studies were used to develop an understanding of the T(sub S)-NDVI relationship. Most of the modeling was based on the Tergra model as originally proposed by Goward. This model, and modified versions developed in this project, simulates the flows of water and energy in the soil-plant-atmosphere system using meteorological, soil and vegetation inputs. Model outputs are the diurnal course of soil moisture, T(sub S), LE and the other individual components of the surface energy balance. Hope, Allen S.
