Book Memories of Two Wars

Download or read book Memories of Two Wars written by Frederick Funston and published by . This book was released on 1911 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though America did not join rebellious Cuban forces against the Spanish empire until 1898, Frederick Funston (1865-1917) was so moved by a speech by Gen. Daniel Sickles in 1896 that he went to Cuba as a filibuster in the battle for Cuban independence. When the United States finally went to war against Spain, he took command of a regiment, was sent to the Philippine-American War, and received the Medal of Honor for his daring and skill in crossing a river to turn the flank of the Philippine army at the Battle of Calumpit. Two years later, in 1901, he became a national hero for capturing Philippine president and lead insurgent Emilio Aguinaldo. In such roles, Funston was integral to the successful implementation of U.S. policy. This book is his first-hand account of his adventures in the Cuban Revolution and the Philippine-American war. He describes the guerrilla-style combat necessitated by the lack of weapons, the exotic scenery and vegetation of the islands, and the myriad characters-- Cuban, American, Spanish, and Philippine-- with whom he worked and fought.

Book The Spanish Cuban American War and the Birth of American Imperialism 1895 1902 1895 1898

Download or read book The Spanish Cuban American War and the Birth of American Imperialism 1895 1902 1895 1898 written by Philip Sheldon Foner and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1972 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This major work by Philip Foner, the well-known historian, has as its chief object the re-definition of the conflict known in the U.S. historiography as the "Spanish-American" war. This very name, in his view, reflects the bias of two generations of historians who relegated Cuba to the passive position of a prize in a struggle between Spain and the United States. It is his contention that the Cuban nation, by virtue of its prolonged and successful rebellion of 1895-1898 (treated in Vol. 1) was a central protagonist of the conflict, its role ending when it was subjected to neocolonial status by the United States. In pursuing this new outlook, Professor Foner studied the sources available in the United States, the rich materials in the Archivo Nacional and the Library of the City Historian in Havana, and enlisted help and documentary evidence furnished by the leading historians and historical institutes of Cuba. These sources have enabled him to deal at length with the occupation and subjugation of Cuba by the United States and reconstruct the story in richer detail and in a more realistic interpretation than has ever been done before. Volume II begins with the war in Cuba after U.S. intervention in 1898 and covers the imposition of U.S. domination of Cuba through the Platt Amendment, which marked the beginning of American neocolonialism"--Back cover.

Book The Spanish American War and Philippine Insurrection

Download or read book The Spanish American War and Philippine Insurrection written by Alejandro de Quesada and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-20 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the uniforms and weapons of the American, Spanish, Cuban and Filipino forces involved in the United States Army's first overseas war. In 1898 the USA took the decision to intervene in the Cuban war of independence against Spain, and to expel the last vestige of European colonial rule from the Americas. This also led to the US acquiring rule over the Philippine Islands; and there, US troops were sent into the jungle to fight a “colonial” war of their own, against Filipino insurgents unwilling to exchange one master for another. The text is illustrated with rare early photographs and color plates.

Download or read book Recollections of My Service and Experiences in the Spanish American War written by Frank J. Hecker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of My Service and Experiences in the Spanish-American War: 1898-1899 Cuba had been restless ever since the severance of Mexico and Central and South America from Spain, caused largely by the pernicious laws, corrupt misgovernment, and exploitation of the colony for the benefit of the mother country. As early as 1850 there was acute discontent in the island, and, because of its proximity to the United States, not only our people but the Administration as well voiced their sympathy freely and frequently. The ten years' war, 1868-78, had moral as well as financial support from our citizens; and during the latter portion of the period intervention by our Government seemed probable. Spain, however, by the promise of the abolition of slavery, reforms in government, and colonial autonomy - in addition to general amnesty for those engaged - brought the war to a close. The promise of governmental reforms and real autonomy proved illusive. Reciprocity with the United States, which had been promised, was not put in force until 1891, and was terminated in 1894. The arrangement had been of great benefit to Cuba, and its termination caused discontent and unrest. Soon preparations for another war began. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Two Wars: Cuban and Philippine Experiences After the articles referred to had been published there was planned a book which was to include them, and besides contain a complete and chronological account of what the writer saw in the Philippines. To fill out the breaks of many months that occur between the incidents of the Cuban insurrection that form part of this book would necessitate rewriting everything on that subject, besides a trip to Havana to consult official records; and the whole thing when finished would in itself be a volume. It is believed, however, that these four chapters will give the reader a fair idea of the conditions under which we marched and fought in those days. IV A DEFEAT AND A VICTORY JIGUANI Nearly five months had passed since the victory of Guaimaro, and in this time the forces of Garcia had roamed at will through the provinces of Oriente and Camaguey. Large convoys escorted by formidable bodies of Spanish troops moved slowly along the main roads, carrying supplies to the isolated garrisons of the interior, and were harassed and fought from the time of starting until their return. Occasionally a column unhampered by transport would sally out on operations, and move ponderously for a week or so from town to town; but it was never for a moment out of sight of the Cubans, who fought it or not as seemed most expedient. Now and then a band of guerillas, well mounted and thoroughly familiar with the country, would dash by night out of one of the larger garrisons and raid through the country, cutting up such small bodies of insurgents as they might encounter, and making a specialty of hunting out our hospitals and murdering the helpless wounded found in them. These detestable wretches were more mobile than the insurgents themselves, their horses being better fed, and usually managed to return to their home stations. When they were run down, however, it was a fight to the death, quarter being neither asked nor given. On one occasion Major Pablo Menocal, a brother of the chief of staff, while scouting with eighty insurgent cavalry in the Holguin district, encountered a band of sixty guerillas on a raid. He formed line before being discovered and made a furious mounted charge. The guerillas fought desperately, but were driven back into a barb-wire fence and annihilated. Not one escaped, and there were no wounded when it was over. In this encounter both sides had gone back to the days of the Crusades, ..
