Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War When the war broke out I thought the country need ed my services but mother did not wish me to go to war because of my immature age. I was seventeen years old when father bade good-bye to mother and started for the southern conflict and I couldn't bear the thoughts of a well and able boy like me letting father go alone so I went with him. We enlisted as Privates in Company E., 58th Regi ment Massachusetts Volunteers, under Captain William E. Masim, and went into camp at Readville, near Boston. As I was not eighteen years of age, and as I had worked in the mill so long that I was pretty white I found it hard to pass all examinations. The doctor said no at first and had me put on the next train for Boston, but I was determined to go so I slipped out the back end of car and went to the Provo-marshal's office. I told him all about it, and how much I wanted to go with my father. I had to tell him what Company and Regiment father was in, and then he sent an orderly after the Captain. When he got there the doctor was sent for, and between them they passed me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War, 1861-1865 Although many histories have been written and tradition has furnished its part toward the perpetuation of the memory of the exciting times of the civil war, very much occurred that has never been recorded. Monuments may be erected and histories written, but unless the veterans now living get busy and refresh their memories, and the memories of their comrades very much that happened, and ought to be preserved in durable form will with the passing of the main actors pass into oblivion. The Confederate Soldiers now living are all old men, and each one could, and ought to contribute items of information that would be interesting to the children and adults of future generations. These scenes, anecdotes, incidents and historical facts ought to be written by the soldiers themselves, for by no other means can a correct history of the war period be handed down to posterity. Download or read book Reminiscences of the Civil War written by Jacob Dolson Cox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War, Vol. 1 My aim in this book has been to reproduce my own experience in our Civil War in such a way as to help the reader understand just how the duties and the problems of that great conflict presented themselves successively to one man who had an active part in it from the beginning to the end. In my military service I was so conscious of the benefit it was to me to get the personal view of men who had served in our own or other wars, as distinguished from the general or formal history, that I formed the purpose, soon after peace was restored, to write such a narrative of my own army life. My relations to many prominent officers and civilians were such as to give opportunities for intimate knowledge of their personal qualities as well as their public conduct. It has seemed to me that it might be useful to share with others what I thus learned, and to throw what light I could upon the events and the men of that time. As I have written historical accounts of some campaigns separately, it may be proper to say that I have in this book avoided repetition, and have tried to make the personal narrative supplement and lend new interest to the more formal story. Book Recollections of the Civil War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recollections of the Civil War Classic Reprint written by Maud E. Morrow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Civil War When one writes a book, a preface is in order. Mine shall be by way of explanation. The only apology I have to offer for writing this little per sonal prounoun I story is the very simple one that it is true. It has been said that we never talk so well as when talking of ourselves. Be that as it may, in telling my own story, I can tell it only in the first person. It is a story that is very dear to me, probably much more so than it will ever be to anyone else. In writing it I have lived it all over, and it has been so real to me that I have seemed to be again within hospital walls, peopled by those whom I have called up from the shadows of the past. In fancy, my mother, whose name is interwoven as a golden thread throughout the fab ric of the story, has been with me, and I have al most felt the touch of a vanished hand and heard the sound of a voice that is still. Page after page has been written beneath her picture on the wall, and as I have lifted my tear-blinded eyes with yearning gaze to her sweet face, the brown eyes. Have looked lovingly down upon me as though smiling approval upon my work. Oh, that I had undertaken it while she was yet with me! Download or read book Memories of the Civil War Classic Reprint written by Henry B. James and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of the Civil War I have written this account of my experience in the service of my country from memory, aided by old diaries, letters, etc., and have endeavored to be as accurate as possible, in regard to dates and events of historical importance, but if mistakes occur, it cannot be wondered at, after such a lapse of time. Some of my diaries were lost upon the battlefield, and of those that remain, many of the entries were in pencil and are almost effaced. I had no intention when I began writing of making a long story, but as I went on, memory brought back many a stirring scene, many a weary march, many a tender thought of comrades who shared them all with me, and so I have written them down as they came to me. My thanks are due my wife for so carefully editing, and my son for printing my attempt to keep in a permanent form, my recollections of the War of the Rebellion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forget-Me-Nots of the Civil War: A Romance, Containing Reminiscences and Original Letters of Two Confederate Soldiers Aunt Pallas, whom you will meet throughout the pages of this book, was a typical African in color, though her head was larger than the average negro, with the kinky hair growing low on her forehead, her eyes were very small, but lighted up by intelli gence. Her nose was large and flat, and most decidedly gave the appearance of a full-blooded native of Africa. Her mouth was large, with full lips even adding to her homeliness. Her shoulders were square, the body and hips with straight lines like a man's. Her limbs were muscular and her stature, though short, was as erect as a young Indian's. She claimed that she made herself so by carrying pails of water on her head when she was a child. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Photographic History of the Civil War, Vol. 1 of 10: In Ten Volumes It will be gathered from the tone of these remarks that I do not think that much of the poetry Dr. Miles has included, suitable though it is for the present work, would find a place in a volume edited with an exigence equal to that manifested by the late Mr. Palgrave in his Golden Treasury. 'but if Dr. Miles had proved as exigent an editor as Mr. Palgrave, he would have been left at the end of his labors, through no fault of his own, without a volume to give us. That would surely have been a pity, for the writers included are thoroughly representa tive of their time, and they display as a rule clarity of thought, rightness of feeling, and creditable powers of expression.
