NOTES, REMINISCENCES, AND REFLECTIONS TRIP TO THE PACIFIC COAST IN 1876. I left Louisville May 9, 1876, for the Pacific Coast, with my wife and my sister, Mrs. Breckinridge. It is useless to dwell upon the trip from here to Chicago, and thence due west to Omaha. It is generally fine rolling prairie skirted with timber, as you cross the various streams through the great States of Illinois and Iowa. After crossing the Missouri River at Omaha, you go several hundred miles through Nebraska, with the same undulating prairie and ordinary farm-houses, full granaries, and great herds of cattle, sheep, horses, etc., indicative of a prosperous and growing country. Then begins the desert of seven hundred miles, on which nothing seems to grow but the sage bush. There are no habitations for man except at the points where the railroad employees have built huts for their convenience and eating-stations for the passengers. These always include grog-shops and "Bourbon" whisky, a tablespoonful of which will nearly kill a man. It is amusing to see what a small thing will attract the attention of a whole train in this lonely and vast desert. The Pacific road runs for several hundred miles along and in sight of the old Mormon trail, or the overland route to California, now used by emigrants to the Black. Hills, with the old ox and horse teams, with their white wagon-sheets, and the usual accompaniment of women, white-haired little children, dogs, cows, horses, etc. Such things we would not notice at home, but on the plains they arrest the attention of all. Men and women will cease to look upon the snow-clad mountains in the distance, where the snow on the mountains and the white clouds in the sky seem to meet and mingle so that you can scarcely tell the one...

Book excerpt: Given the intimacy of the friendship between Abraham Lincoln and Joshua Fry Speed, it's remarkable that there is not more biographical information about Speed. There have been a few sketches and at least one book on the relationship of the Speed brothers to Lincoln. In this long-forgotten, slim volume, Joshua Speed himself offers a lecture on his memories of his dear friend, Lincoln. Also included is a short biographical sketch of Speed and a lecture he delivered regarding a trip to California

Book Reminiscences of California and the Civil War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reminiscences of California and the Civil War Classic Reprint written by Daniel Cooledge Fletcher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of California and the Civil War For quite a number of years I have been requested by my friends. Especially by my niece, to write an account of my experiences in California and the War. I have not done so until quite lately, however, since I have not been accustomed to writing. Most of the following pages have been written during the last few winters, when I have been compelled by the severity of the weather to remain in the house. The more I have written, the more I have become interested in the subject, and I have found the work a great deal of com pany, especially during the cold winter season, when I have had much leisure. My sufferings and sacrifices for my country must be my apology for intruding upon the kindness of my friends. Then, too, I have 'hoped that my travels and adventures, which are perhaps out of the ordinary run, might prove of interest to many. Book excerpt: Five lively firsthand accounts of real life in the exciting pre-Yankee era of Californias rich history are offered in this bookfour of them world premiere publications, and all of them new and complete translations. This was an era not only of political intrigues and sectional clashes but also of upheaval as new ideas and attitudes came to a conservative Californian society. Piracy, kidnapping, lust, Indian uprisings, and scenes of battle all vie for the readers attention with fascinating passages about everyday life in the missions and presidios, governmental offices, and barracks. Governors are ejected, invaders fought, revolts arise, and plots hatched. While largely centered in Southern California, these accounts also bring us north to the Bay area and south to Baja California and farther. The reader of these memoirs will enjoy an intimate experience of life as it really wasa personal view not to be found in standard textbooks. As before with the authors previous foray into California history, Narciso Botellos Annals 18331847, the original manuscripts are rendered into a spirited English translation, capturing the nuances and vigor of these adventures in a land so familiar yet so exotic.

Book We Came We Saw We Left A Family Gap Year

Download or read book We Came We Saw We Left A Family Gap Year written by Charles Wheelan and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlie Wheelan and his family do what others dream of: They take a year off to travel the world. This is their story. What would happen if you quit your life for a year? In a pre–COVID-19 world, the Wheelan family decided to find out; leaving behind work, school, and even the family dogs to travel the world on a modest budget. Equal parts "how-to" and "how-not-to"—and with an eye toward a world emerging from a pandemic—We Came, We Saw, We Left is the insightful and often hilarious account of one family’s gap-year experiment. Wheelan paints a picture of adventure and connectivity, juggling themes of local politics, global economics, and family dynamics while exploring answers to questions like: How do you sneak out of a Peruvian town that has been barricaded by the local army? And where can you get treatment for a flesh-eating bacteria your daughter picked up two continents ago? From Colombia to Cambodia, We Came, We Saw, We Left chronicles nine months across six continents with three teenagers. What could go wrong?

This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California Dreaming is about my journey to America for higher studies in 1961 and my difficult first 2 years. On the way I had a wonderful shipboard romance with Kavita, a tall Indian woman. We parted in Italy and we were heartbroken. Before we could meet in America she had to rush back to India because Grandmother had a heart attack. Later she visited with her mother. The highlight was her trying on a bikini. What a beautiful sight--voluptuous breasts, curvy body, long legs! It was huge turn-on and later we enjoyed passionate lovemaking. Love of my life could not stay and had to return to India. I wondered if I would see her again. College in Indiana was great, but I could not handle snow and California was calling! Driving there in an old car was adventurous. Discrimination was high against a turbaned Sikh. No decent jobs were available to me. Finally I got a job at a packinghouse. It was hard keeping my head above water while studying at Fresno State. Where is Kavita? Are we destined to be together?

Book excerpt: An LA Times Best Book of the Year • A New York Times Editors' Pick • A Newsweek 25 Best Fall Books • A The Millions Most Anticipated Book of the Year "Gripping and beautiful. With the artistry of a poet and the intensity of a revolutionary, Lovato untangles the tightly knit skein of love and terror that connects El Salvador and the United States." —Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Natural Causes and Nickel and Dimed An urgent, no-holds-barred tale of gang life, guerrilla warfare, intergenerational trauma, and interconnected violence between the United States and El Salvador, Roberto Lovato’s memoir excavates family history and reveals the intimate stories beneath headlines about gang violence and mass Central American migration, one of the most important, yet least-understood humanitarian crises of our time—and one in which the perspectives of Central Americans in the United States have been silenced and forgotten. The child of Salvadoran immigrants, Roberto Lovato grew up in 1970s and 80s San Francisco as MS-13 and other notorious Salvadoran gangs were forming in California. In his teens, he lost friends to the escalating violence, and survived acts of brutality himself. He eventually traded the violence of the streets for human rights advocacy in wartime El Salvador where he joined the guerilla movement against the U.S.-backed, fascist military government responsible for some of the most barbaric massacres and crimes against humanity in recent history. Roberto returned from war-torn El Salvador to find the United States on the verge of unprecedented crises of its own. There, he channeled his own pain into activism and journalism, focusing his attention on how trauma affects individual lives and societies, and began the difficult journey of confronting the roots of his own trauma. As a child, Roberto endured a tumultuous relationship with his father Ramón. Raised in extreme poverty in the countryside of El Salvador during one of the most violent periods of its history, Ramón learned to survive by straddling intersecting underworlds of family secrets, traumatic silences, and dealing in black-market goods and guns. The repression of the violence in his life took its toll, however. Ramón was plagued with silences and fits of anger that had a profound impact on his youngest son, and which Roberto attributes as a source of constant reckoning with the violence and rebellion in his own life. In Unforgetting, Roberto interweaves his father’s complicated history and his own with first-hand reportage on gang life, state violence, and the heart of the immigration crisis in both El Salvador and the United States. In doing so he makes the political personal, revealing the cyclical ways violence operates in our homes and our societies, as well as the ways hope and tenderness can rise up out of the darkness if we are courageous enough to unforget.
