Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Eighty Years This little volume of Reminiscences has been sent out to the public in response to the Wishes of numerous friends. I make no claims for it beyond this, and it repre sents the recollections of one Who has seen many stirring events and met many notable personages of a past generation, that to me at least seems not less interesting or important than the present. The recalling of these incidents, Which I can do most readily though now nearing ninety, has been to me a labour of love, and I trust that in this volume will be found much to interest. CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH It has occurred to me that some reminiscences of a long life would be of interest to my family and friends. My memory goes back for more than eighty years. I recall distinctly when about five years old my mother took me to the school of Mrs. Westbrook, wife of the well-known pastor of the Dutch Reformed church, who had a school in her house, within a few doors. The lady was a highly educated woman, and her husband, Doctor Westbrook, a man of letters as well as a preacher. He specialized in ancient history, and the interest he aroused in Roman and Greek culture and achievements has continued with me ever since. The village of Peekskill at that time had between two and three thousand inhabitants. Its people were nearly all Revolutionary families who had settled there in colonial times. There had been very little immigration either from other States or abroad; acquaintance was universal, and in the activities of the churches there was general co-operation among the members. Church attendance was so unanimous that people, young or old, who failed to be in their accustomed places on Sunday felt the disapproval of the community. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Eighty Years: Autosketches, Random Notes and Reminiscences T has seemed to me desirable to perfect, so far as possi ble, the Genealogical Records of the Hollister and Chamberlin families, with which I am connected. To this end I have sought their records from various sources and recorded them at length in our Family Bible, a brief synopsis of which is here given. Of our English ancestors but little can be learned, from the fact that, by reason of the War of Independence, so alienated were the colonies from the mother country that few of our American families cared to maintain relationship with their kindred in England and were indifferent as to the records which might relate them to their ancestors. SO far as I have been able to connect our families with their antecedents the results are here briefly outlined. Download or read book Records and Reminiscences Personal and General Classic Reprint written by Francis C. Burnand and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records and Reminiscences Personal and General I have been informed, and repeat the information, on the authority of an ancient mariner over eighty years of age, and of his corroborator, an old Deal pilot, that on November 29, 1836, there was experienced on the sea coast the greatest gale of the last century. Its effects were especially felt all along the south-eastern coast, and Ramsgate, which as a rule escapes the full force of the worst weather, was not on this occasion exceptionally favoured. If stars and planets give omens, then may the winds and waves be credited with forecasting events, and that the wind was raised to such an extent on the day of my birth may in some way account for the difficulty I have experienced in raising the wind ever since I arrived at such an age as compelled my recognition of necessity as the prolific mother of invention. I think that on Novem ber 29, 1836, all the wind that could be raised was raised, and, there being no storage of force in my special behoof, the supply was then and there, as far as concerned my cm'sse, exhausted. It was very flattering, but scarcely considerate, of the winds to honour my birth with a grand blow-out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Reminiscences of Seventy Five Years Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reminiscences of Seventy Five Years Classic Reprint written by William Endicott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Seventy-Five Years I was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, on January 4, 1826; consequently I have nearly completed my eighty-seventh year. Beverly was a town of considerable importance in the Common wealth. It was, as a part of Salem, one of the earliest of the Colonial settlements, many of its citizens had been engaged in foreign commerce sailing from Salem and Boston as well as from Beverly, and some had taken important parts in the polit ical life of State and nation. The leading citizen of that time, and probably for all time, was Nathan Dane, the author of the Ordinance of 1787 for the government of the Northwestern territory, by which slavery was forever excluded from what now constitutes the States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. Seldom is it given to man to become the instrument in legislation of such transcendent importance as this which consecrated that vast region forever to Human Freedom. To Dr. Dane also is due the provision in the Constitution prohibiting any State from passing laws impairing the obliga tion of contracts. I remember him very well, an old gentleman with a serene and kindly face. I used to carry to him the N orth American Review and other periodicals for which he and my grandfather, Robert Rantoul, with Dr. Joshua Fisher, were joint subscribers. When I remember my little conversations with one who had been a distinguished member of the Continental Congress it does seem to me a far cry indeed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On another occasion I was entering his private office as another senator was coming out of the Cabinet room, which was filled. He called out: "Senator Depew, do you know that man going out?" I answered: "Yes, he is a colleague of mine in the Senate." "Well," he shouted, "he is a crook." His judgment subsequently proved correct.-from "Theodore Roosevelt"CHAUNCEY M. DEPEW (1834-1928) was, over the course of his long life, in the business of law, of the railroads, of politics... and of speechmaking. Whether he was heading up the New York Central Railroad as its president or serving the state of New York in the U.S. Senate (which he did from 1899 to 1911), Depew's deepest love was telling captivating stories to as many listeners as possible. He found his greatest audience with this wonderful 1921 book, a series of tales and reminiscences of his encounters with generals (Grant, Garfield), presidents (Lincoln, Roosevelt, and others), and giants of journalism, business, and entertainment. Graced with an abundance of wit and more than a dash of charm, Depew was a master storyteller, and his memories of eight tumultuous decades in the life of America are as uniquely insightful as they are grandly entertaining.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Past Life The few copies so printed have long been exhausted; and I have been urged by friends whose judgment I rightly respect, to publish the volume at once, with larger additions than those hitherto made. This, I am aware, is a very old and often abused plea for publication. But in the present instance other motives concurred to justify what indeed may almost be deemed a posthumous act, seeing that I go to the press when already advanced in my eighty-fourth year. Download or read book Some Reminiscences Classic Reprint written by William L. Royall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Reminiscences My grandmother was the most intellectual per son that I have ever known. She lived in our fam ily until 1867, when she died at the age of eighty five. I was raised at her knee and she taught me all that I ever learned during the school period. Sir John Falstaff says, If I know what the inside of a church is made of, I am a pepper-corn. I can say the same of a schoolhouse. I have never to this day seen the inside of one. My grandmother hated Thomas Jefferson as if he had been the Devil, and in that I have no doubt she reflected the Views of the Chief Justice. But at any rate, she thought him the embodiment of all evil. I have heard her often denounce him as centering in himself all that was dangerous to the American people. Federalism versus Democracy. In 1860 the people of Virginia were strongly in favor of the Union. But when Mr. Lincoln called for troops to coerce the States south of us, opinion in Virginia changed in the twinkling of an eye. The entire population became unanimous for sid ing with the States to the south and resisting coercion to the death.
