While in my native town of Plymouth I had read and thought for myself, and had gradually passed through various stages of scepticism, until I was dissatisfied even with the advanced Unitarianism of a preacher like the Rev. J. K. Applebee. But I could not find any literature in advance of his position, and there was no one of whom I could inquire. Secularism and Atheism I had never heard of in any definite way, although I remember, when a little. Boy, having an Atheist pointed out to me in the street. Naturally I regarded him as a terrible monster. I did not know what Atheism was except in a very vague way; but I inferred from the tones, expressions, and gestures of those who pointed him out to me, that an Atheist was a devil in human form. His father, in those days, never went to church, but had no anti-religious views, and duly sent his children to Sunday school, already the well-established provision for relieving English parents of their religious responsibilities and securing domestic quiet during some part of the day of rest. The boy Charles was a diligent and promising pupil, and at the, age of fifteen had been promoted to the status of Sunday school teacher, in accordance with the inexpensive educational principle introduced by Joseph Lancaster in 1798, whereby pupils became teaching monitors as soon as they knew their rudiments. With that object we have added a facsimile of his autograph, and a reduced reproduction of one of the two very fine photographs of the study taken last May by Messrs. Dixon of Albany Street, N. W. My father's books were very dear to him, and had always been so, from the time when as a dragoon he was able to carry the whole of his library in his soldier's knapsack, until the day of his death, when his literary possessions had outgrown all ordinary-sized rooms, and had even swelled beyond the capacity of his work-room at Circus Road. They numbered in all rather over 7,000 volumes, about 3,000 Blue Books, besides a very large number of unbound pamphlets. In many respects the library is essentially a poor man's library. There are only a few rare bindings, and comparatively few costly "first editions"; now and again there is a volume missing from a set, and here and there a title page is wanting. But, such as they are, he valued them, all and every one Twice within recent years he thought he should be obliged to sell them to meet legal expenses - the first time it was to pay Government costs during his Parliamentary struggle, the second occasion was after the Peters and Kelly case. This Character Sketch, written by her when the grave had but closed over Mr. Bradlaugh, does not profess to be an impartial summing up of his life's work. Partisan journalists of the baser sort have done their worst for years to defile this man's name, and to represent him as a kind of unclean Yahoo, full of blasphemy and sedition. Mrs. Besant's picture, painted from life, comes as a useful corrective to the malignant attacks of bigoted opponents. No doubt Mr. Bradlaugh said very much that was painful, even revolting, to the reverent mind. But what Christian is there who, on reading over the shameful story of intolerance with which Mr. Bradlaugh was treated, does not feel that the responsibility for much that was most deplorable in Mr. Bradlaugh's teaching, lies at the door, not of the Freethinker, but of the un-Christlike Christian of our time. That this resolute soul lived and died doing so much good work for the poor and the oppressed, although without the conscious inspiration of Christianity, should surely not be reckoned so much a reproach to him as to those blind leaders of the blind, whose bigotry and stupidity drove him outside the fold.
