Download or read book Reminiscences of a Ranchman Classic Reprint written by Edgar Beecher Bronson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Ranchman Ah, yes, indeed, my boy, you are quite right. My years in the Sierras and plains of California, Oregon, and Nevada were the happiest I have ever known or ever expect to know. "Science I love, but geology is the only branch of science that could have held me to its active, persistent pursuit. "For me the study or the laboratory would have been utterly impossible. "The working geologist, on the contrary, dwells in close contact with Nature in her wildest and most savage moods. He seeks the solution of his problems where vast dynamic forces have in past ages crumpled the earth's crust and brought huge mountain ranges into being - ranges that expose its structure and tell much from which we may deduce how its structure was accomplished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades of the 1870s and 1880s were the heyday of the Old West as the world has come to know it in stories and songs, plays, motion pictures, and television dramas. Edgar Beecher Bronson, the real-life prototype of that now familiar character, the tenderfoot from the East, went out where the West began when it began. When he took his first herd of cattle north of the North Platte River, he went into an area "of roughly three hundred thousand square miles [which] held no white man's habitation save the little camp of miners in the Black Hills, and had for its only tenant nomad bands of Cheyenne and of Oglala, Brulä, and Uncapapa Sioux. . . . Bar one ranch immediately on the Platte River to the east of Fort Laramie, I was the first man to carry a herd of cattle into the Sioux country, and there locate and permanently maintain a ranch." The story of Bronson's apprenticeship on the range and his evolution from a greenhorn puncher into an experienced old hand has come to be regarded as a classic of cow-country literature. If almost an excessive amount of excitement seemed to come his way, it "was not because I was hunting trouble, but was simply due to the fact that trouble seemed to take a lot of pleasure in hunting the few plains dwellers of that day in that region--it just came to all of us, in one form of another, in the course of the day's work in the late 1870s and early 1880s."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Ranchman's Recollections: An Autobiography in Which Unfamiliar Facts Bearing Upon the Origin of the Cattle Industry in the Southwest and of the American Packing Business Are Stated, and Characteristic Incidents Recorded Originally brought out in the columns of T he Breeder's Gazette, these sketches attracted at once and held the close attention of thousands of delighted readers in every part of the country. In soliciting their preparation we approached the subject with the same confidence that the Prophet of old smote with his rod the rock of Horeb; but I must here and now confess that the stream of thought called forth sur passed in purity and sweetness anything anticipated. Mr. Hastings has made a real contribution to the pastoral literature of the West; one Vitalized throughout by an intensely human touch. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences in the Early Sixties: From the Lives of Three Brothers I, being one of the early settlers, naturally had some part in local politics. Owing to the Kansas Brown condition there were some harsh and unreasonable utterances. Occasionally a claim owner or ranchman would be in town and of course have his say. A Mr. Putman became very much offended at me and threatened to shoot me. Not being seriously alarmed at his threat I did not avoid him. Whether he was only bluffing, or changed his mind, and also his plans, I never knew, but was of course glad to escape unhurt.
