Book excerpt: Includes the First World War Illustrations Pack – 73 battle plans and diagrams and 198 photos “An account of the Front Line from the Guards Brigade The Guards have always been known as ‘The Gentlemen’s Sons’ and it seems that the author of this book was no exception. At work in ‘the City’ when war broke out and he managed initially to be elected to that other gentleman’s club of the time—The Honourable Artillery Company. It was with the HAC that he went to the continent and saw action in the early engagements of the war before selection for cadet school and a commission. Upon returning to the Front, Fryer embarked on a wartime career that would keep him in action almost constantly throughout the hostilities and which he would report with nothing less than the casual savoir faire one would expect of him. Despite his style Fryer clearly saw hard campaigning at Givenchy, Loos, the Hohenzollern Redoubt, Ypres, the Somme and many other brutal and significant actions until the final offensives of 1918.”-Print Ed.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Grenadier: 1914 1919 Everyone knows how the War started; if they don't, it is through their own idleness, as books on the subject are legion; I do not propose, therefore, to do more than tell how it started for me and for many more harmless civilians at that time employed in peaceful occupations. The London Season had just come to its allotted end, a season perhaps more magnificent than any of its forerunners. Everyone had given themselves up to amusement; this, indeed, seemed to be the sole object of existence. Whether people had any foreboding of the misery that was to descend on the world I know not, but I remember often feeling that something vague was going to happen, and that the season of 1914 was going to be the last of its kind. CHAPTER XIV THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME We stayed at Volkeringhove till the 29th, during which time we trained, and also had Battalion Sports. The battalion was in very good fettle now, and keen to have another proper fight with the Germans after so many months of trench warfare. There had been a few changes among the officers, and the companies, when we left for the Somme, were commanded by (1) Wolridge Gordon, (2) Stanhope, (3) Hopley, (4) Mackenzie. Colonel Brooke still commanded, with Major Rasch second in command, and Oliver Lyttleton adjutant. We entrained on the 20th at Bollezeele, and travelling all night, arrived at a little place called Petit Houin, not far from St. Pol. Here we detrained and marched some way to La Souich; it was a very hot day, and the march was somewhat trying. La Souich is a pretty little place close to Doullens. We did not stay there long, leaving for the forward area on the 1st, having dinners and bathing at Loucheux en route. We went on in lorries to the Courcelles au Bois area; this place was some three miles from the front line. For some time the authorities seemed undecided where to use us, and we moved about from place to place doing various jobs until we finally settled more or less on the British right wing. We bivouacked at Courcelles; the weather was frightfully hot, and there was practically no shade, so we weren't very comfortable there. We used to go up to the front line every night to dig trenches for the 20th Division, the idea then being that we should eventually take over that part of the line and attack from there. This was the extreme left of the original attack on July 1st, and here the attack had failed. We continued digging up till the 6th, and really made some extraordinarily fine...

Book Flakhelfer to Grenadier

Download or read book Flakhelfer to Grenadier written by Karl Heinz Schlesier and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2014-06-19 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of a German boy drafted into military service during WWII is vividly recounted in this memoir of combat and survival. On January 7, 1943, the German Government ordered that boys as young as fifteen be drafted into anti-aircraft service, the Reich Labor Service, and the armed forces. Throughout the war, about 200,000 boys became Flakhelfer and served in batteries of light and heavy flak. Drafted at fifteen, Karl Heinz Schlesier served in regions that suffered some of the heaviest air raids of the war. His memoir is a coming of age story in a world gone mad, where working beside Russian POWs, protecting industries with slave labor, courting a girl among bombed-out ruins was unremarkable. As the war approached its bitter end, Schlesier was thrown into a disintegrating frontline only fifty kilometers from his childhood home. Basing his memoir solely on his diary notes and memories of that period, Schlesier has consciously avoided including what he learned after the war. Flakhelfer to Grenadier gives a voice to the silent generation of boys born in Germany in 1926 and 1927. This generation has been silent because the horror it knew pales in comparison to the horror of the war machine it was conscripted into.

Book Seventy One Years Of A Guardsman s Life Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Seventy One Years Of A Guardsman s Life Illustrated Edition written by General Sir George Wentworth Alexander Higginson GCB GCVO and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Illustrated with over two hundred and sixty maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Crimean War] At a regimental gathering following Sir George Higginson’s funeral one officer remarked to another that no-one could remember the regiment without Sir George present. It is hardly surprising as General Sir George Wentworth Alexander Higginson GCB, GCVO had lived for 101 years, the longest of any British General, and as the title of his autobiography indicates the majority of those years in the Grenadier Guards. General Higginson’s life seemed to be in fact two lives; the first in active service with the British army, he would see action in many parts of the world. He would achieve great fame as a hero of the Crimean War and his reminiscences of which forms the greater part of this volume. The Author travelled out to the Crimea as adjutant of the 3rd Battalion; and fought at the battles at Alma, Balaklava and Inkerman at which he was greatly distinguished. His details of the siege and fall of Sebastopol are among the best that survive. He details in full the filthy unsanitary conditions, inept command, and cholera that the British soldiers had to endure, not to mention the shot and shell of tens of thousands of Russian soldiers. Following his military retirement in 1893 at the ripe age of 67 and then embarked on career as advisor to Queen Victoria, travelling dignitary as far afield as America and Russia and figurehead of the regime. A renowned and statesmanlike figure he died in 1927 mourned by all who knew him. A fascinating autobiography.
