Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck (20 March 1870 – 9 March 1964) was a general in the Imperial German Army and the commander of its forces in the German East Africa campaign. For four years, with a force that never exceeded about 14,000 (3,000 Germans and 11,000 Africans), he held in check a much larger force of 300,000 British, Belgian, and Portuguese troops. Essentially undefeated in the field, von Lettow-Vorbeck was the only German commander to successfully invade imperial British soil during World War I. His exploits in the campaign have come down "as the greatest single guerrilla operation in history, and the most successful." [Source: Wikipedia]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences and Sketches The suggestion of this volume came from two students of former years who have attained distinction in letters. If the approbation of old friends in whose judgment and good taste one has confidence is endorsed by acceptance on the part of the first publisher to whom the material is submitted, and a fair offer is made, it is excusable perhaps to yield to a secretly cherished wish and bring old papers out again from their dusty retirement. If the reception of the volume should be as kindly as that of the individual papers, the author would have no reason to complain. Many thanks are hereby expressed to the journals whose kindness permits the reprinting of the papers, namely: the Atlantic Monthly, Christian Union, Independent, Methodist Review, Cumberland Presbyterian Review, Sewanee Review, South Atlantic Quarterly, Transactions of the Wisconsin Academy, Vanderbilt Quarterly, Christian Advocate, Southern Christian Advocate, and Nashville American. Download or read book A Sketch of the Battle of Franklin Tenn written by John M. Copley and published by . This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the Civil War, John M. Copley was a young boy from Dickson County, Tennessee. As a fifteen year old, he enlisted in Company B, 49th Tennessee Infantry in Charlotte, Tennessee. In this narrative, the reader is taken on a journey with Copley from his enlistment in 1861 through the end of the war. The narrative particularly focuses on Copley's participation in Hood's fateful 1864 Tennessee Campaign and his capture amidst the indescribably staggering carnage of the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee on November 30, 1864. Here, Copley as a soldier in Quarles' Brigade, Walthall's Division, was captured on the east side of the Columbia Turnpike near the famous Carter cotton gin. After an all-night march without rations, Copley and his fellow prisoners were taken to the Tennessee State Penitentiary where they awaited transportation by train to Louisville, Kentucky, and further transportation by rail to Chicago, Illinois. Here, at Camp Douglas, Copley, in vivid details, describes the wretched conditions and inhumane treatment he and others received as Confederate prisoners of war at Camp Douglas, Illinois.

Download or read book Writing Lives Together written by Felicity James and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-27 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A diary entry, begun by a wife and finished by a husband; a map of London, its streets bearing the names of forgotten lives; biographies of siblings, and of spouses; a poem which gives life to long-dead voices from the archives. All these feature in this volume as examples of ‘writing lives together’: British life writing which has been collaboratively authored and/or joins together the lives of multiple subjects. The contributions to this book range over published and unpublished material from the late eighteenth to the late nineteenth centuries, including biography, auto/biographical memoirs, letters, diaries, sermons, maps and directories. The book closes with essays by contemporary, practising biographers, Daisy Hay and Laurel Brake, who explain their decisions to move away from the single subject in writing the lives of figures from the Romantic and Victorian periods. We conclude with the reflections and work of a contemporary poet, Kathleen Bell, writing on James Watt (1736–1819) and his family, in a ghostly collaboration with the archives. Taken as a whole, the collection offers distinctive new readings of collaboration in theory and practice, reflecting on the many ways in which lives might be written together: across gender boundaries, across time, across genre. This book was originally published as a special issue of Life Writing.
