As in the first volume, Griffin provides here an intimately detailed rendering of Hemingway's life. The book is replete with physical detail--the sights and sounds of working-class Paris, skiing in the Austrian Alps, the running of the bulls at Pamplona. Griffin presents Hemingway's friendships with Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound (he thought both were "lazy," but respected them for their talent and influence), his dislike of writers John Dos Passos and Ford Maddox Ford and his less-than-favorable opinion of Maxwell Perkins (he felt Perkins was more interested in business than literature). For Hemingway's personal life, there is his infatuation with Lady Duff Twysden, his affair with Pauline Pheiffer, and the failure of his first marriage. Throughout this book, Griffin shows how Hemingway incorporated much of his life into his fiction, where the central character is Ernest himself, working out the crises that plagued him at the time. Griffin does all this with a seamless style, weaving unpublished material (including hours of Hadley's reminiscences recorded shortly before her death) into an intriguing narrative of a great writer's life.

Wesley examines the engagement of both northern and southern preachers in politics during the American Civil War, revealing an era of denominational, governmental, and public scrutiny of religious leaders. Controversial ministers risked ostracism within the local community, censure from church leaders, and arrests by provost marshals or local police. In contested areas of the Upper Confederacy and Border Union, ministers occasionally faced deadly violence for what they said or would not say from their pulpits. Even silence on political issues did not guarantee a preacher's security, as both sides arrested clergymen who defied the dictates of civil and military authorities by refusing to declare their loyalty in sermons or to pray for the designated nation, army, or president. The generation that fought the Civil War lived in arguably the most sacralized culture in the history of the United States. The participation of church members in the public arena meant that ministers wielded great authority. Wesley outlines the scope of that influence and considers, conversely, the feared outcomes of its abuse. By treating ministers as both individual men of conscience and leaders of religious communities, Wesley reveals that the reticence of otherwise loyal ministers to bring politics into the pulpit often grew not out of partisan concerns but out of doctrinal, historical, and local factors. Typical of Scots-Irish settlers, they arrived with little more than basic farming tools, determined to make it on their own terms. Davidson worked hard, prospered, married well and built a plantation on the Catawba River he called Rural Hill. The Davidson's were loyal British citizens who paid their taxes and participated in colonial government. When the Crown's overbearing authority interfered, independence became paramount and Davidson and his neighbors became soldiers in the Revolutionary War. After the war Davidson managed his plantation, created shad fisheries, helped develop the local iron industry with his sons-in-law and was an early planter of cotton. His sons and grandsons, along with their slave families, continuously increased and improved the acreage and became early practitioners of scientific farming. Drawing on public documents, family papers and slave records, this history describes how a fiercely independent family grew their lands and fortunes into a lasting legacy.
