Excerpt: The Remington Model 870 is a U.S.-made pump-action shotgun manufactured by Remington Arms Company, Inc. It is widely used by the public for sport shooting, hunting, and self-defense. It is also commonly used by law enforcement and military organizations worldwide. The Remington 870 was the fourth major design in a series of Remington pump shotguns. John Pedersen designed the fragile Remington Model 10 (and later the improved Remington Model 29). John Browning designed the Remington Model 17 (which was later adapted by Ithaca into the Ithaca 37), which served as the basis for the Remington 31. The Model 31 was well liked, but struggled for sales in the shadow of the Winchester Model 12. Remington sought to correct that in 1949 by introducing a modern, streamlined, rugged, reliable, and relatively inexpensive shotgun - the 870. It was an adaptation of the Remington 11-48 autoloader, itself an adaptation of the John Browning-designed Remington 11. Sales of the 870 have been steady. They reached 2...

Book History of Remington Firearms

Download or read book History of Remington Firearms written by Roy Marcot and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2005-06-01 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name Remington is synonymous with the history of the United States, from the Civil War, the two world wars, and every skirmish in between . . . to outlaws beyond the pale, and the law enforcement officers hired to catch them. The name is equally synonymous with hunting, from casual afternoons plinking by a pond, to deer hunting in Pennsylvania, to hunting elk and antelope in the West. The History of Remington Firearms follows the rise of the company, from Eliphalet Remington’s first handmade gun in 1816, to the dominance of the Remington factories during the early industrial era, with lavish custom-made pieces for heroes and statesmen, with the triumph of the common man’s gun, and with the little .22, which became a part of so many childhoods. It is also a history of innovation, of the rush to create, with the development of the first hammerless repeater, the first slide-action rifle, advances in boring, and revolutions in ammunition. And the modern classics, like the 870 pump-action “Wingmaster” shotgun, and the Model 700 bolt-action rifle. Complete with more than 150 full-color photographs, including designer drawings and pictures of the gun in use throughout history, The History of Remington Firearm is a collector’s edition for gun enthusiasts and historians alike.

Book America s Premier Gunmakers Remington

Download or read book America s Premier Gunmakers Remington written by K.D. Kirkland and published by JG Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's great gunmakers are more than industrial entities. They are centers of exacting craftsmanship and precision engineering, and they are truly living legends. American gunmakers built not only the guns that won the Wild West but the guns that won both World Wars, and which today delight demanding sportsmen the world over. In this volume of America's Premier Gunmakers you will read about: A History Of Remington, Civilian Arms, Military Arms, Remington Ammunition, Eliphalet Remington's First Gun, How Remington Entered The Arms Trade and A Glossary of Remington Arms. In 1816, young Eliphalet Remington decided that, despite his tender age of twenty-four, he could build a better rifle than he could buy. He was right. Within a few years, his fine rifle was the talk of the young United States. Hunters, settlers, soldiers-all beat a path to his door. By 1864, the Remington Company held the patent for the world's first successful breech-loading mechanism. And it didn't stop there. The pearl-handled Double Derringer favored by gamblers, the Remington .22 rifle carried by Annie "Little Miss Sure Shot" Oakley, the percussion rifles that helped settle America, Civil War muzzleloaders and the 1905 Model II, the first successful auto loading gun - all of these are part of not only the history of Remington, but the history of the nation itself. With the aid of beautiful color photographs, this volume tells the fascinating story of Remington. It is a treasure to delight any gun enthusiast, whether sportsman or historian.

Is there an experienced crime laboratory analyst who has not asked an attorney to define a term used? So, if we use the word objective and we really mean numerical data or mathematical probability statement, lets say so. If we mean photomicrographs, charts, or standards of comparison, lets specify it. If we use the word intuitive to mean knowledge from experience, lets spell it out. If we use the word subjective to mean human interpretation based on education, training, and experience, lets say so. In other words, lets try to say what we mean.

Book The Fata Morgana

  • Author : Leo Frankowski
  • Publisher : Baen Publishing Enterprises

  • ISBN : 1618242458

Download or read book The Fata Morgana written by Leo Frankowski and published by Baen Publishing Enterprises. This book was released on 2000-08-01 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doomed Paradise The ancient tales of European Man, carefully recorded by pious monks and hedge wizards alike, are insistent about the Western Isles. One of the tales of Doubting Thomas, the apostle, has it that he Christianized these islands and stayed there until the end of his days. The Arthurian legends clearly state that Arthur's father, Uther, came from the Western Isles. Ancient and Medieval maps agree in showing them as being off the Western Coast of France. Lyonnesse was a part of the Western Islands, as was the City of Ys, Avalon, and the Land of Dahout. Up until the time of the First Crusade, there are records of pilgrims visiting the Holy sites of the Western Islands. The remains of mercantile records of those days hint of trade with the islands of the west. Irish records and legends, which are generally regarded as reliable back to preChristian times, have many references to great floating islands being pushed by ocean currents and winds alike past the Emerald Isle, and sometimes becoming snagged there for a time. The Icelandic Eddas make similar references. Modern sailors and travelers sometimes sight great, many tiered cities near the ocean's horizon, but these people are rarely believed. It is easier for modern, technocentric man to believe in an optical illusion, the Fata Morgana. This book is about two modern, hardheaded engineers who find the Western Islands. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). "When I teach science fiction, I use Frankowski's books as an example of how to do it right." ¾Gene Wolfe
