Book excerpt: A poetic and nuanced exploration of the human experience of flight that reminds us of the full imaginative weight of our most ordinary journeys—and reawakens our capacity to be amazed. The twenty-first century has relegated airplane flight—a once remarkable feat of human ingenuity—to the realm of the mundane. Mark Vanhoenacker, a 747 pilot who left academia and a career in the business world to pursue his childhood dream of flight, asks us to reimagine what we—both as pilots and as passengers—are actually doing when we enter the world between departure and discovery. In a seamless fusion of history, politics, geography, meteorology, ecology, family, and physics, Vanhoenacker vaults across geographical and cultural boundaries; above mountains, oceans, and deserts; through snow, wind, and rain, renewing a simultaneously humbling and almost superhuman activity that affords us unparalleled perspectives on the planet we inhabit and the communities we form.

Book Remembering Mark Dancing in the Sky

Download or read book Remembering Mark Dancing in the Sky written by Colleen Nuncio and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2021-01-23 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My son, Mark Ostrander, was a vibrant and popular young man. In Osage, Iowa, high school, he was on the honor roll, and lettered in track, wrestling, and football. He was Homecoming King, loved to ski, and played drums in the Osage Precisionnaires Drum and Bugle Corp. He won many dance contests and went to Hollywood to compete on Deney Terrio's "Dance Fever" when he was just 18. In college, he was named to the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Dean's List and named to the cast for the production of M-A-S-H. He danced in the Community Theatre Production of '"Oklahoma." In May, he graduated with honors from NIACC when he received his Associate Degree in Science. In October of the following year, he enrolled in the University of Iowa to pursue Dentistry. When Mark was 21, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and his journey through life became a disaster at every turn. In and out of mental hospitals, he persevered and managed to pop back up with each setback. In 1988, at age 28, he graduated from Control Data Institute in Dallas, Texas, with a 96.1 GPA and received his Computer Technology degree. He had such high aspirations, but with every step forward there were always two steps back. At age 34, Mark was left disabled after he attempted to take his life. The 22 years that followed were filled with amazing determination and dedication by Mark, his family, and his friends as he recovered from his injuries. After spending many months in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities in Texas, his options for a place to live were reduced to nursing homes. Outrageous errors, oversights and neglect were widespread in the nursing homes where Mark resided. The absence of training among nursing home personnel was not unusual and the staff members' horrendous lack of judgment led to unsafe circumstances. Poor communication between administration and staff resulted in dangerous situations and unsanitary practices promoted the spread of disease. In order to prevent mistakes from being made and to avert negligent care, it was extremely important that I closely monitored Mark's stay in each nursing home. He was often exposed to illegal practices like "dumping," unwarranted discharge, and retaliation. I learned what to expect from the nursing homes and wasn't afraid to ask questions. Mark's phenomenal determination to succeed and my constant vigilance were important factors which helped Mark achieve many steps toward his recovery. Mark loved his music and his computer, and toward the end of his rehabilitation, he had made great strides in his physical and mental recovery, despite having had to tolerate the many nursing home nightmares.

Book excerpt: All that glitters isn't gold . . . sometimes it's love. In the lush, sun-bright splendor of southern California, three women, three friends, search for the courage to dream, to trust, to love. But there are dark secrets and hidden betrayals that must first be overcome. A terrible accident has stolen Allison Fitzgerald’s dreams, and it has taught her that life is too precious—and too fragile—to waste. So when she meets a man who evokes a passion in her that she has never known before, she surrenders to his love without questioning his secretive past. Gifted and beautiful actress Winter Carlyle has learned, from painful experience, that the people she loves always leave her, and that it is far too dangerous to care, and that she is only liked when she is pretending to be someone she is not. Still, she is willing to risk everything for the doctor who sees beyond the pretense . . . But is he willing to risk everything for her? Emily Rousseau only feels safe, only feels free, when she is behind the lens of her camera, safe and free from the men who want her, and want to hurt her. The portraits she takes are works of art, and there is one man, unlike any other man she has ever known, who sees not only the talent in her work, but the loveliness in her. But can she accept the love, and face the demons, that will free her from her past? Download or read book Memories of War written by Suzanne Falgout and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micronesians often liken the Pacific War to a typhoon, one that swept away their former lives and brought dramatic changes to their understandings of the world and their places in it. Whether they spent the war in bomb shelters, in sweet potato fields under the guns of Japanese soldiers, or in their homes on atolls sheltered from the war, Micronesians who survived those years know that their peoples passed through a major historical transformation. Yet Pacific War histories scarcely mention the Islanders across whose lands and seas the fighting waged. Memories of War sets out to the fill that historical gap by presenting the missing voices of Micronesians and by viewing those years from their perspectives. The focus is on Micronesian remembrances—the ritual commemorations, features of the landscape, stories, dances, and songs that keep their memories of the conflict alive. The inclusion of numerous and extensive interviews and songs is an important feature of this book, allowing Micronesians to speak for themselves about their experiences. In addition, they also reveal distinctively Micronesian cultural memories of war. Memories of War preserves powerful and poignant memories for Micronesians; it also demonstrates to students of history and culture the extent to which cultural practices and values shape the remembrance of personal experience.

Book The Unidentified

  • ISBN : 0525557571
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book The Unidentified written by Colin Dickey and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Absolutely perfect for the current moment." --Buzzfeed America's favorite cultural historian and author of Ghostland takes a tour of the country's most persistent "unexplained" phenomena In a world where rational, scientific explanations are more available than ever, belief in the unprovable and irrational--in fringe--is on the rise: from Atlantis to aliens, from Flat Earth to the Loch Ness monster, the list goes on. It seems the more our maps of the known world get filled in, the more we crave mysterious locations full of strange creatures. Enter Colin Dickey, Cultural Historian and Tour Guide of the Weird. With the same curiosity and insight that made Ghostland a hit with readers and critics, Colin looks at what all fringe beliefs have in common, explaining that today's Illuminati is yesterday's Flat Earth: the attempt to find meaning in a world stripped of wonder. Dickey visits the wacky sites of America's wildest fringe beliefs--from the famed Mount Shasta where the ancient race (or extra-terrestrials, or possibly both, depending on who you ask) called Lemurians are said to roam, to the museum containing the last remaining "evidence" of the great Kentucky Meat Shower--investigating how these theories come about, why they take hold, and why as Americans we keep inventing and re-inventing them decade after decade. The Unidentified is Colin Dickey at his best: curious, wry, brilliant in his analysis, yet eminently readable.
