Book Remedial Treatment of Buildings

Download or read book Remedial Treatment of Buildings written by Barry A. Richardson and published by Architectural Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barry Richardson provides a complete coverage of the problems which arise when wood and other building materials suffer from any of the many types of decay that can arise due to damp, fungal or insect attack. The book is concerned with remedial treatments of several different types, specifically dampness, wood deterioration, masonry deterioration and thermal problems, as well as moss, algae and lichen growth on masonry, sulphate attack in buildings, and various health conditions which are related to the building environment and materials. He deals with all aspects of remedial treatment, from the initial survey to how to replace materials effectively when deterioration has progressed too far. Improved diagnostic recommendations, particularly in relation to dampness, are included in this thoroughly revised second edition. As well as updating the terminology, Barry Richardson has added a chapter on health and safety in relation to remedial treatments, a subject of great importance because of the increasingly stringent health and environmental controls. The general descriptions of remedial treatments are followed by seven appendices which are designed as convenient reference sources for architects, surveyors, engineers and contractors.

Book Timber Decay in Buildings and Its Treatment

Download or read book Timber Decay in Buildings and Its Treatment written by Brian Ridout and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the insects and fungi that may appear in building timbers if unnoticed or unavoidable maintenance problems allow them to remain damp. There are two options if a problem is found. The building owner or occupier may require the organism to be rapidly exterminated and a document issued which seems to reassure that it will not come back. In this case they must accept generally expensive and frequently destructive chemical treatments using more or less noxious pesticides. Unfortunately each decade's panacea has usually become the next decade's poison and a pesticide accepted as 'safe' has proved elusive. Pesticides may be used in a 'safe manner' and this is the province of the remedial company, but legislation is continuously evolving and pesticides are becoming increasingly unpopular. The second option is to take a little time and to consider the problem. This may not always be possible, but in many situations a little background knowledge can make a considerable difference. Frequently an understanding of why the damage has occurred, together with an understanding of insect or fungi requirements and limitations, can reduce treatments or show that they are unnecessary.
