Download or read book Rembrandts Portrait of a Young Gentleman written by Jan Six and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When art dealer Jan Six saw the 'Portrait of a Young Gentleman' in a Christie?s auction catalogue, he instantly knew that it could not possibly be a work that had been attributed to ?the circle of Rembrandt?, but that the master must have painted it himself. The last time a hitherto unknown painting by Rembrandt was discovered was in 1974, when 'The Baptism of the Eunuch' came to light. But how does one convince the world of such a discovery? Does something like an absolute eye exist? And how special is such a painting in comparison to all the other known works by the most famous Dutch painter? In this book Jan Six takes the reader on a compelling and erudite journey, all about his exciting discovery and a boy?s dream come true, showing the 'Portrait of a Young Gentleman' through the eyes of his discoverer. 0Jan Six (1978) studied art history and worked at Sotheby?s London and in Amsterdam as head of the Old Master Paintings department. Since 2008 he operates as an art dealer and runs his own gallery, specialised in Dutch and Flemish Old Master Paintings and Drawings.

Book Young Rembrandt A Biography

Download or read book Young Rembrandt A Biography written by Onno Blom and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating exploration of the little-known story of Rembrandt’s formative years by a prize-winning biographer. Rembrandt van Rijn’s early years are as famously shrouded in mystery as Shakespeare’s, and his life has always been an enigma. How did a miller’s son from a provincial Dutch town become the greatest artist of his age? How in short, did Rembrandt become Rembrandt? Seeking the roots of Rembrandt’s genius, the celebrated Dutch writer Onno Blom immersed himself in Leiden, the city in which Rembrandt was born in 1606 and where he spent his first twenty-five years. It was a turbulent time, the city having only recently rebelled against the Spanish. There are almost no written records by or about Rembrandt, so Blom tracked down old maps, sought out the Rembrandt family house and mill, and walked the route that Rembrandt would have taken to school. Leiden was a bustling center of intellectual life, and Blom, a native of Leiden himself, brings to life all the places Rembrandt would have known: the university, library, botanical garden, and anatomy theater. He investigated the concerns and tensions of the era: burial rites for plague victims, the renovation of the city in the wake of the Spanish siege, the influx of immigrants to work the cloth trade. And he examined the origins and influences that led to the famous and beloved paintings that marked the beginning of Rembrandt’s celebrated career as the paramount painter of the Dutch Golden Age. Young Rembrandt is a fascinating portrait of the artist and the world that made him. Evocatively told and beautifully illustrated with more than 100 color images, it is a superb biography that captures Rembrandt for a new generation.

It includes an examination of the vocabulary used by Italians to describe Rembrandt’s art, with a focus on the patron Don Antonio Ruffo, and closes by considering the reception of his works by Italian artists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony M. Amore and Tom Mashberg's Stealing Rembrandts is a spellbinding journey into the high-stakes world of art theft Today, art theft is one of the most profitable criminal enterprises in the world, exceeding $6 billion in losses to galleries and art collectors annually. And the masterpieces of Rembrandt van Rijn are some of the most frequently targeted. In Stealing Rembrandts, art security expert Anthony M. Amore and award-winning investigative reporter Tom Mashberg reveal the actors behind the major Rembrandt heists in the last century. Through thefts around the world - from Stockholm to Boston, Worcester to Ohio - the authors track daring entries and escapes from the world's most renowned museums. There are robbers who coolly walk off with multimillion dollar paintings; self-styled art experts who fall in love with the Dutch master and desire to own his art at all costs; and international criminal masterminds who don't hesitate to resort to violence. They also show how museums are thwarted in their ability to pursue the thieves - even going so far as to conduct investigations on their own, far away from the maddening crowd of police intervention, sparing no expense to save the priceless masterpieces. Stealing Rembrandts is an exhilarating, one-of-a-kind look at the black market of art theft, and how it compromises some of the greatest treasures the world has ever known.

Book Visions of the Self Rembrandt and Now

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A legendary painting by Rembrandt forms the centerpiece of this exploration of self-portraits by leading artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Published to commemorate an exhibition presented by Gagosian in partnership with English Heritage, this stunning volume centers on Rembrandt's masterpiece Self-Portrait with Two Circles (c. 1665), from the collection of Kenwood House in London. The painting is considered to be Rembrandt's greatest late self-portrait and is accompanied here by examples of the genre from leading artists of the past one hundred years. These include works by Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lucian Freud, and Pablo Picasso, as well as contemporary artists such as Georg Baselitz, Glenn Brown, Urs Fischer, Damien Hirst, Howard Hodgkin, Giuseppe Penone, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, and Rudolf Stingel, among others. Also featured is a new work by Jenny Saville, created in response to Rembrandt's masterpiece. Full-color plates of the works, generous details, and installation views of the exhibition accompany an expansive essay by art historian David Freedberg that provides a close look at the self-portraits created by Rembrandt throughout his life and considers the role of the Dutch master as the precursor of all modern painting.

Book excerpt: This book, written by authorities in the field, maps the many developments in Rembrandt’s self-portraiture during his life and attempts to explain exactly why this genre played such a dominant role in his work. The authors give new emphasis to the tradition of self-portrayal in Netherlandish art and the impact of his innovative style on his contemporaries (whether artists or collectors) and on his followers. Significant reinterpretations of Rembrandt’s approach also arise from a close investigation of lesser-known aspects of his work, such as his manipulation of his features or his depiction of himself in a variety of highly authentic historical costumes.

Book Rembrandt s Self Portrait Authenticity and Attribution

Download or read book Rembrandt s Self Portrait Authenticity and Attribution written by and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Art - History of Art, grade: 2,0, , language: English, abstract: This essay aims to examine the "Self-portrait as a Young Man" in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, from around 1630 to Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669). The paper tries to illuminate and contribute to the debate on its authenticity and attribution. Preliminary, the object’s condition and material are examined to ensure a comprehensive visual analysis. Next, the portrait’s visual and stylistic characteristics are explored while considering possible changes due to damage, restoration, and alteration. The following section investigates the portrait from an art historical point of view and in the light of the research on the object, on Rembrandt, and on seventeenth century workshop practise. The essay concludes with an attribution of the object to Rembrandt’s workshop and reflects the author’s opinion based on the detailed visual examination and the comprehensive study of the research regarding the portrait in question. The painting was examined by the Rembrandt Research Project as well as by other scholars throughout the last decades. However, the opinions regarding the painting’s authenticity are divided. While its current owner, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, accepts it as autograph Rembrandt others like Ernst van de Wetering as part of the Rembrandt Research Project reject its authenticity and attribute the portrait to his workshop. On behalf of the Museum of Greenland this study analyses the different viewpoints, illuminates the issues of the object’s authenticity and formulates an argument for its attribution.
