Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on the Marquis De Chastellux's Travels The Marquis is in doubt whether the Britiih troops, who palled Chadsford, were in one or two cc lumns. Though I have failed in my enquiries relative to this point, I have met with an anecdote that may illuftrate his account, and deferves to be made more generally known. The Marquis was informed, that the redoubt which Mr. Wafhington had thrown up to cover Chadsford, could not be taken, unlefs turned. Lieutenant-colonel Moncrief, then captain, was in the front of a column, which advanced to a redoubt there was a howitzer in it, loaded with grape (hot, pointed directly towards the column, and a man (leading by it with a lighted match in his hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on the Marquis De Chastellux's Travels The Marquis's testimony is frequently favourable to the British armies, from whose merit, it is obvious, he aims to detract; and indeed it was politic for him to do so, as printed copies of his work were circulated at Paris during the war, the flattering contents of which in all probability echoed to America. Speaking of the strength of Mud Island, the Marquis remarks, " When we recollect the innumerable obstacles the English had to surmount in the present war, it is difficult to assign the cause of their successes; but if we turn our eyes on all the unforeseen events which have deceived the expectations of the Americans, and frustrated their best concerted measures, one cannot but be persuaded that they were devoted to destruction, and that the alliance with France alone proved the means of their preservation." There never can be a greater panegyric bestowed on the Britim generals than what this sentence contains; innumerable obstacles they did surmount, and it did not depend on them to crush the naval power of France. Book Chastellux s Travels in North America

Download or read book Chastellux s Travels in North America written by Basil Hall and published by Applewood Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francois Jean De Beauvoir, Marquis De Chastellux was born in Paris, France in 1734. He joined the French Army as a Second Lieutenant at the age of 13 and rose through the ranks during the Seven Years' War. Chastellux came to be as famous for his literary work, with his publication of a book on philosophy in 1772, as he was for his military exploits. When the French expeditionary forces assigned to the Revolutionary Continental Army set sail for America in 1779, he was one of the three major generals sent with General Rochambeau. They arrived in America and took part in the victorious Yorktown campaign. Invaluable to the Continental Army commanders for his command of the English language, Chastellux remained in America until returning to France in early 1783. Travels in North America is an account of Chastellux's travels between campaigns, including a journey through Virginia in April 1782. Translated from the French by an English gentleman, who resided in America at the period, with notes by the translator. The book also includes a biographical sketch of the author, letters from Gen. Washington to the Marquis de Chastellux, and notes and corrections by the American editor. This first American impression is a reprint of Grieve's translation, published in London in 1787, in a "consolidated and economical form" (from the Preface).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in North-America: In the Years 1780-81-82 As a memorial of the conflict which made the United States one of the nations of the earth, and a sketch of the features of the country, with some of the principal arbiters of its destiny in that momentous period, the Travels Of The Marquis De Chastellux will ever hold an honourable place in the interest and feelings, either of the American patriot or mere speculative reader. In following his narrative, however, it will readily be perceived, that the Author, a man of science, reflection, and literary habits, wrote more for private and individual gratification, than for critical scrutiny or the public eye. Hence the numerous little incidents and circumstances, the trivial anecdote and immaterial remark, designed only for a confidential and friendly ear; blended with the serious observations and profound reflections on the state of society, the origin and progress of events, and the probable future condition of our embryo republic. In preparing this work for an extensive impression, to an English mind it would appear, that much of his tea-table chit-chat and travelling memoranda might as well have been omitted; while on the graver and more weighty subjects of his inquiries, he will be perused with fixed regard and the deepest attention.
