Book Remanso

Download or read book Remanso written by Sarah Triana and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-06-02 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Remanso" is the gripping true story of how Sarah Triana and her family gave up everything in the quest for freedom. It provides a revealing account of what life was like in Cuba during the first decade after Fidel Castro gained control of the country on January 1, 1959. It tells how lives were negatively affected by the loss of freedom through a communist doctrine, what people who disagreed with Fidel Castro's regime endured, and the difficult choices they were forced to make during that time. But most importantly, "Remanso" reveals every aspect of Triana's life-growing up in Cuba, the death of her mother when she was just nine years old, and becoming a woman living in the United States. It illustrates her life as a teenager adjusting to a new language while attending school in the Unites States. It demonstrates how her strong beliefs and convictions guided her through difficult experiences such as divorce and becoming a single mother. Inspiring and spiritually empowering, this memoir communicates what being a "mother" is all about.

Book A Generation of Spanish Poets 1920 1936

Download or read book A Generation of Spanish Poets 1920 1936 written by C. B. Morris and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1969-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical study of the group of remarkably talented poets who flourished in Spain between the First World War and the Spanish Civil War includes copious quotations accompanied by English prose translations. Mr Morris treats his poets as a group, showing how they shared certain themes and attitudes. He begins with a general study of the generation as a whole and then examines the use of tradition; the zest and levity of the Jazz Age; the exaltation of life as a shared attitude; then its converse; the escape from life; and finally the expression in complex imagery of personal tensions and disturbances. These are often 'difficult' poets, but become less so when they are sympathetically examined in this way and in relation to earlier literary traditions. Mr Morris enables the reader to take bearings and establish relationships which are enhanced by reproductions of photographs of the poets.

Book Alton s Paradox

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicolas Poppe
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2021-09-01
  • ISBN : 1438485050
  • Pages : 449 pages

Download or read book Alton s Paradox written by Nicolas Poppe and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alton's Paradox builds upon extensive archival and primary research, but uses a single text as its point of departure—a 1934 article by the Hungarian American cinematographer John Alton in the Hollywood-published International Photographer. Writing from Argentina, Alton paradoxically argues of cine nacional, "The possibilities are enormous, but not until foreign technicians will take the matter in their hands and with foreign organization will there be local industry." Nicolas Poppe argues that Alton succinctly articulates a line of thought commonly held across Latin America during the early sound period but little explored by scholars: that foreign labor was pivotal to the rise of national film industries. In tracking this paradox from Hollywood to Mexico to Argentina and beyond, Poppe reconsiders a series of notions inextricably tied to traditional film historiography, including authorship, (dis)continuation, intermediality, labor, National Cinema, and transnationalism. Wide-angled views of national film industries complement close-up analyses of the work of José Mojica, Alex Phillips, Juan Orol, Ángel Mentasti, and Tito Davison.
