Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remains of the Prehistoric Age in England Perhaps it may be permissible and even advisable to say a word at this point about these lists. They are strictly trial-lists, and though very great pains have been taken to make them accurate and complete, no one can be better aware than their author that, from the nature of things, they must necessarily suffer from sins of commission and omission. In the body of the book the author has tried as far as possible to describe objects which he has himself seen and studied, but it is obviously impossible for any one person to have seen and checked all the places mentioned in the lists. The lists have been compiled from the Ordnance Map, from Murray's and other County Handbooks, from Proceedings of various societies, and from other sources. After much considera tion, and acting on the advice of competent authorities, it has been decided that the lists shall appear, and it is hoped that they may be at least useful as a basis for a more perfect compilation in the future. Book Prehistoric Britain Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prehistoric Britain Classic Reprint written by Robert Munro and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Britain As the word "prehistoric" has no limitation in the past history of the country, it logically follows that a treatise on "Prehistoric Britain" would have an equally wide range; but by a judicious discretion we limit the scope of this book to the period during which man was an inhabitant of Western Europe, prior to the invention of written records. But the Britain of that early period differed widely from the Britain of to-day both in climate and geographical area, and to some extent in its flora and fauna. Consequently our first duty is to describe with as much precision as modern researches will admit of, but very briefly, the physical conditions which obtained in prehistoric Britain when it comes within the above-defined scope of the present work. Book Pre Historic Remains of Caithness

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pre-Historic Remains of Caithness: With Notes on the Human Remains In presenting to the Museum of Scottish Antiquaries the interesting series of Pre-historic remains which I have had the good fortune to discover in Caithness, I think it desirable to place on record the principal facts connected with their discovery in a more complete form than was possible in the papers on the subject, which have been read at meetings of various learned Societies. I am further induced to adopt this course by the opportunity which it affords of giving illustrations of the objects for the benefit of those who may not have seen the originals, and more especially because it enables me to present to the scientific world the valuable remarks of Professor Huxley on the crania and skeletons, accompanied by accurate drawings which have been made under his superintendence. A few introductory remarks may be permitted in order to explain the objects with which these researches were undertaken by me during a short residence in Caithness in the course of the past autumn. The problem of British archaeology may be thus stated. We know the two extremes of a series. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This will explain the somewhat limited range of the examples, and how limited is that range no one is more painfully aware than himself; but experience has taught him that there are few more fertile sources of error than a tacit acceptance of the descriptions of others. N o matter how excellent and accurate those descriptions may be, to attempt to make use of them at second hand is to do injustice to them and to betray one's own lack of thoroughness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coll and Tiree: Their Prehistoric Forts, and Ecclesiastical Antiquities, With Notices of Ancient Remains in the Treshnish Isles The chronology of the Duns is more complicated, and, as regards the Hebrides, the only tenable conclusion appears to be that while they are prehistoric in origin, the period of their erection cannot be placed later than the ninth to the thirteenth century, some of them probably dating back even so far as the Christian era - or beyond it.
