How much money is being given to churches, by Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Roman Catholics, Lutherans, and other groups? American Piety, the first of a three-volume study of religious commitment, answers these and a host of other questions about the contemporary religious scene. Particularly startling are the contrasts in beliefs, practices, and experiences revealed among the eleven major Christian denominations whose membership is compared.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you believe in many roads to salvation? When you think about establishing a relationship with God, what comes to mind? Do you know what the Bible reveals on this subject? Notice what Jesus Christ Himself has to say: "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:44) God starts this relationship process and you must choose to accept or reject His calling when offered. If you accept, you have a definite process to follow that He clearly reveals in the Bible. What is that process? 1) After God calls you, repentance is the starting point in your relationship with Him. Without repentance, you are cut off from God. 2) After you repent, your next step is water baptism, a primary principle of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 6:1-2). 3) The next step on your road to eternal life is to receive God's Holy Spirit, which comes through "laying on of hands," as described in Hebrews 6:2. If God is calling you, will you respond? Inside the Bible Study aid ebook, The Road to Eternal Life, we will examine the Scriptures and look at the steps you must take to respond to God's calling. Start your journey on the only road to eternal life and be part of the awesome future God has planned for you! Chapters in this ebook: -- Introduction: The Road to Eternal Life -- Repentance: Your First Step -- Jesus and His Apostles Affirm the Need to Obey God's Commandments -- Grace, Works and Obedience -- The Crucial Role of Faith -- Water Baptism and Laying On of Hands -- Should Children Be Baptized -- Should We Want to Be Baptized With Fire? -- Forgiveness of Sin -- Staying the Course -- We're Baptized Into a Spiritual Body Inside this Bible Study Aid ebook: "The Bible describes repentance as a profound realization of our sins and resulting sorrow that leads us to change our thoughts and actions (2 Corinthians 7:10)." "To some, the change God wants in us can appear so overwhelming that repentance and conversion to God's way of thinking seem impossible. And that's the point. Without God's help, they are impossible!" "Overcoming our habitual sins and selfish nature does not happen instantly. It is a lifelong process, often involving great effort." "The symbolic meaning of baptism, then, is profound. It represents both forgiveness of sins and newness of life in Christ." "No matter what our background or past mistakes, when we genuinely repent and are baptized, God promises complete forgiveness." "Living God's way must always remain our priority. We must continually "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness" (Matthew 6:33)."

Book Being Faithful Christian Commitment in Modern Society

Download or read book Being Faithful Christian Commitment in Modern Society written by Judith A. Merkle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the Christian life is lived in a pluralistic situation where different contexts of belonging give rise to different moral challenges. While it is characteristic of modern life to exist in a postmodern situation where there is an erosion of comprehensive systems of meaning, we still live today in contexts of belonging. We still seek to gather out of the fragments of modern life the sustenance of a network of belonging, belief and practice which comprise a faithful life. The construction of such a life, not only for us, but for others, serves as the framework for our moral commitments. Furthermore, sustaining and transforming social frameworks which shape various aspects of human life form the life task of adult Christians.

Book Bonds of Salvation

Download or read book Bonds of Salvation written by Ben Wright and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ben Wright’s Bonds of Salvation demonstrates how religion structured the possibilities and limitations of American abolitionism during the early years of the republic. From the American Revolution through the eruption of schisms in the three largest Protestant denominations in the 1840s, this comprehensive work lays bare the social and religious divides that culminated in secession and civil war. Historians often emphasize status anxieties, market changes, biracial cooperation, and political maneuvering as primary forces in the evolution of slavery in the United States. Wright instead foregrounds the pivotal role religion played in shaping the ideological contours of the early abolitionist movement. Wright first examines the ideological distinctions between religious conversion and purification in the aftermath of the Revolution, when a small number of white Christians contended that the nation must purify itself from slavery before it could fulfill its religious destiny. Most white Christians disagreed, focusing on visions of spiritual salvation over the practical goal of emancipation. To expand salvation to all, they created new denominations equipped to carry the gospel across the American continent and eventually all over the globe. These denominations established numerous reform organizations, collectively known as the “benevolent empire,” to reckon with the problem of slavery. One affiliated group, the American Colonization Society (ACS), worked to end slavery and secure white supremacy by promising salvation for Africa and redemption for the United States. Yet the ACS and its efforts drew strong objections. Proslavery prophets transformed expectations of expanded salvation into a formidable antiabolitionist weapon, framing the ACS's proponents as enemies of national unity. Abolitionist assertions that enslavers could not serve as agents of salvation sapped the most potent force in American nationalism—Christianity—and led to schisms within the Presbyterian, Baptist, and Methodist churches. These divides exacerbated sectional hostilities and sent the nation farther down the path to secession and war. Wright’s provocative analysis reveals that visions of salvation both created and almost destroyed the American nation.

Download or read book Eternal Salvation I M Okay You Re Okay Really written by Russell A. Young and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has disclosed truths about eternal salvation that are often not fully considered. (Romans 5:10) It is the issue of the life of Christ beyond His sacrificial offering that the author has revealed as the requirement for eternal salvation. To support his presentation and to ensure validity he has authenticated his position through extensive Scriptural referencing. The author asks the question Am I okay? Are you okay? concerning ones eternal hope and examines the fullness of this issue from a Biblical perspective. The reader will find that many assumptions and presumptions have infiltrated modern teaching and that the truth may not be what he had imagined. Many readers will be required to challenge their understanding according to the evidences of the Scriptures and all will find ready access to many useful teachings. Those who read through the book will understand the Lords command to love the Lord their God with all of their mind, soul, and heart, and those who take to heart the teachings enclosed will find their spiritual walk greatly enriched.

Book excerpt: This document's purpose is to spell out the Church's understanding of the nature of revelation--the process whereby God communicates with human beings. It touches upon questions about Scripture, tradition, and the teaching authority of the Church. The major concern of the document is to proclaim a Catholic understanding of the Bible as the "word of God." Key elements include: Trinitarian structure, roles of apostles and bishops, and biblical reading in a historical context.
