Book Religious Activities at the University of Texas Classic Reprint

Download or read book Religious Activities at the University of Texas Classic Reprint written by University Of Texas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Activities at the University of Texas In the second place, it is equally evident that, in the face of these conditions, we can not hope to win the desired result unless we first look for the controlling factors, and then, with tolerance and faith, with slight regard for precedents and less for prejudice, seek by actual trial to find and foster the practical methods by which the moral and spiritual character of the institution may keep pace with its material and intellectual growth. Indeed, we may question whether the failure of any institution to measure up to the standard it has set is not due to the fact that, while adjust ing itself in other respects to the new relations, it has allowed once active spiritual forces to become atrophied, because the methods of applying them are not in accord with actual needs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Problems: A Study of the Religious Activities of College Men, Being a Report of the Conference of Southern Student Secretaries, July, 1908 The first series of College Problems proved so helpful to the Student Secretaries, Association Presidents, Professors, and others interested in the work, not only in the South but in other sections of the country, that an urgent call has been made for the publication of the report of the second Conference of Southern Student Secretaries, held at Black Mountain Inn, Black Mountain, N. C., June 23-July 19 inclusive. At this Conference Dr. O. E. Brown, of Vanderbilt University, conducted a study daily, somewhat on the seminar plan, the topic being "God's Self-Revelation." This study was based on the books outlined in Study No. I. (See page 7.) Prof. Frank L. Jewett, of the Texas Bible Chair, University of Texas, conducted in similar manner a daily study of the Earlier Prophets, based on the volumes outlined under Bible Study of Course No. I. An hour each evening was given to the discussion of some practical phase of Association work under the leadership of Dr. W. D. Weatherford, International Student Secretary. Each discussion was introduced with a paper prepared by some one of the Secretaries, which papers make up the body of this report. A course of study has been outlined for the year 1908-09, and a series of twenty-two topics for papers on practical work assigned for preparation. (See Course No. 2, page 7.) Book Christian Theology and the Secular University

Download or read book Christian Theology and the Secular University written by Paul A. Macdonald, Jr. and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the secular university by definition is non-sectarian or non-denominational, then how can it accommodate a discipline like Christian theology? Doesn’t the traditional goal of theological study, which is to attain knowledge of the divine, fundamentally conflict with the main goal of secular academic study, which is to attain knowledge about ourselves and the world in which we live? So why should theology be admitted, or even care about being admitted, into secular academic life? And even if theology were admitted, what contribution to secular academic life could it make? Working from a Christian philosophical and theological perspective but also engaging a wide range of theologians, philosophers, and religious studies scholars, Christian Theology and the Secular University takes on these questions, arguing that Christian theology does belong in the secular university because it provides distinct resources that the secular university needs if it is going to fulfill what should be its main epistemic and educative ends. This book offers a fresh and unique perspective to scholars working in the disciplines of theology, philosophy, and religious studies, and to those in other academic disciplines who are interested in thinking critically and creatively about the place and nature of theological study within the secular university.

Book Women s Religious Activity in the Roman Republic

Download or read book Women s Religious Activity in the Roman Republic written by Celia E. Schultz and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-12-08 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding the discussion of religious participation of women in ancient Rome, Celia E. Schultz demonstrates that in addition to observances of marriage, fertility, and childbirth, there were more--and more important--religious opportunities available to Roman women than are commonly considered. Based on research in ancient literature, inscriptions, and archaeological remains from the fifth to the first century B.C.E., Schultz's study shows that women honored gods unaffiliated with domestic matters, including Hercules and Jupiter; they took part in commercial, military, and political rites; they often worshipped alongside men; and they were not confined to the private sphere, the traditional domain of women. The Vestal Virgins did not stand alone but were instead the most prominent members of a group of women who held high-profile religious positions: priestesses of Ceres, Liber, and Venus; the flaminica Dialis and the regina sacrorum; other cult officials; and aristocratic matrons who often took leading roles in religious observances even though they were not priestesses. Schultz argues that women were vital participants--both professional and nonprofessional--in the religion of the Roman Republic and that social and marital status, in addition to gender, were important factors in determining their opportunities for religious participation in the public sphere.

Download or read book The Peyote Road written by Thomas C. Maroukis and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite challenges by the federal government to restrict the use of peyote, the Native American Church, which uses the hallucinogenic cactus as a religious sacrament, has become the largest indigenous denomination among American Indians today. The Peyote Road examines the history of the NAC, including its legal struggles to defend the controversial use of peyote. Thomas C. Maroukis has conducted extensive interviews with NAC members and leaders to craft an authoritative account of the church’s history, diverse religious practices, and significant people. His book integrates a narrative history of the Peyote faith with analysis of its religious beliefs and practices—as well as its art and music—and an emphasis on the views of NAC members. Deftly blending oral histories and legal research, Maroukis traces the religion’s history from its Mesoamerican roots to the legal incorporation of the NAC; its expansion to the northern plains, Great Basin, and Southwest; and challenges to Peyotism by state and federal governments, including the Supreme Court decision in Oregon v. Smith. He also introduces readers to the inner workings of the NAC with descriptions of its organizational structure and the Cross Fire and Half Moon services. The Peyote Road updates Omer Stewart’s classic 1987 study of the Peyote religion by taking into consideration recent events and scholarship. In particular, Maroukis discusses not only the church’s current legal issues but also the diminishing Peyote supply and controversies surrounding the definition of membership. Today approximately 300,000 American Indians are members of the Native American Church. The Peyote Road marks a significant case study of First Amendment rights and deepens our understanding of the struggles of NAC members to practice their faith.

Book Ethnopharmacology Volume II

Download or read book Ethnopharmacology Volume II written by Elaine Elisabetsky and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnopharmacology is a component of Encyclopedia of Biological, Physiological and Health Sciences in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Ethnopharmacology is the scientific study correlating ethnic groups, their health, and how it relates to their physical habits and methodology in creating and using medicines. This Theme on Ethnopharmacology presents the field as an amalgam of perspectives, primarily those of pharmacology, pharmacognosy, anthropology, and botany. It highlights the uniquely biocultural perspective on ethnopharmacology offered by medical anthropology, which underscores that health and healing are culturally constructed and socially negotiated. The definition of ethnopharmacology that frames this volume is: the study of indigenous medical systems that connects the ethnography of health and healing with the physiological relevance of its medical practices. The history of botanical medicines is traced from primate self-medication to contributions to biomedicine. The methods of ethnopharmacologic inquiry are presented from pharmacologic, ecological, ethnographic, data management, and ethical perspectives. Chapters are devoted to plants used in the treatment of specific disorders: cancer, parasitic infection, AIDS, inflammation, diabetes, and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders. The important role that plant medicines play in the developing world is revealed in discussion of ritual and ceremony, safety issues, health care, and biodiversity. These two volumes are aimed at the following a wide spectrum of audiences from the merely curious to those seeking in-depth knowledge: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.
