Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written over the span of a lifetime, this collection of S. Nurul Hasan's essays (edited and introduced by Satish Chandra) covers a wide range of topics: historiography and new sources; state, religion, and the ruling class; and urban and rural life. The various essays demonstrate Hasan's varied interests and the evolution of his ideas on medieval Indian history. Satish Chandra's introduction familiarizes the reader with his personality, achievements, and monumental contribution to Indian history-writing. The section on historiography deals with the manner in which Indian history has been distorted, both in the past, by British imperial historians, and in more current times by Indian communal historians. It also raises the problem of nationalities in medieval India, once a subject of intense debate. Part II of the volume deals with the state, religion, and ruling classes. It offers a new interpretation of Akbar's religious views, and also includes a number of articles on the crucial role of zamindars in medieval India. There is also a well-researched essay on the theory of the Nur Jahan Junta. The third section of the book examines urban and rural life in the period and includes essays on agrarian production and prices of food grain in the territory of Amber. The final section looks at some important sources of late Mughal history, and also considers the Afghan-Mughal conflict.

Book A History of State and Religion in India

Download or read book A History of State and Religion in India written by Ian Copland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering the first long-duration analysis of the relationship between the state and religion in South Asia, this book looks at the nature and origins of Indian secularism. It interrogates the proposition that communalism in India is wholly a product of colonial policy and modernisation, questions whether the Indian state has generally been a benign, or disruptive, influence on public religious life, and evaluates the claim that the region has spawned a culture of practical toleration. The book is structured around six key arenas of interaction between state and religion: cow worship and sacrifice, control of temples and shrines, religious festivals and processions, proselytising and conversion, communal riots, and religious teaching/doctrine and family law. It offers a challenging argument about the role of the state in religious life in a historical continuum, and identifies points of similarity and contrast between periods and regimes. The book makes a significant contribution to the literature on South Asian History and Religion.

Book Enquiries in Medieval India Religion Society Culture and Polity Religion Society Culture and Polity

Download or read book Enquiries in Medieval India Religion Society Culture and Polity Religion Society Culture and Polity written by Rattan Lal Hangloo and published by Primus Books. This book was released on 2022-04-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enquiries in Medieval India: Religion, Society, Culture, and Polity illustrates the nature and span of medieval India, which was always subject to external influences. These influences, upon assimilation, made India internally plural and got reflected in a continuing conversation between its different socio-religious traditions, cultures, strands of thought, and polities. With deliberations on the periodization of medieval India to exploring contacts between India and Central Asia during the period, this work investigates a range of historical problems. It examines the role of political ideas, institutions, religious vocabulary, cultural virtues, and communal relationships that helped in consolidating and conducting the affairs of the state in a pluralistic society. The intricate links of urbanization with the perception of territoriality of the medieval state are brought into focus in an essay and, in another, there are investigations into the place of Sufism in the politics of the Deccan. Keeping aside the framework of preoccupations with different dynasties and their fortunes and intervening into unexplored fields, this book explores how the institutional bases in every field of state and society formed the bedrock for the entire medieval period and beyond.
