Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel for an Age of Doubt Two years have passed since this book was first printed. A new edition is now prepared for popular use by leaving out the appendix and making the volume smaller. In writing a new preface, I am glad of the opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the many friends who have given the book a welcome in different parts of the world, and have translated its message into other languages.1 wish to acknowledge also the benefit received from those intelligent critics who have pointed out some of its faults and shortcomings, and to make some brief reply to those other critics who have misconceived its purpose and misrepresented its meaning. But most of all I would like to say a word to make the spirit and aim of the book more clear, and so to bring it into touch with the personal life of those into whose hands it may fall. Book Religion in an Age of Doubt

Download or read book Religion in an Age of Doubt written by Charles John Shebbeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion in an Age of Doubt In no branch of human knowledge has there been a more lively increase of the spirit of research during the past few years than in the study of Theology. Many points of doctrine have been passing afresh through the crucible; "re-statement" is a popular cry and, in some directions, a real requirement of the age; the additions to our actual materials, both as regards ancient manuscripts and archaeological discoveries, have never before been so great as in recent years; linguistic knowledge has advanced with the fuller possibilities provided by the constant addition of more data for comparative study; cuneiform inscriptions have been deciphered, and forgotten peoples record and even tongues, revealed anew as the outcome of diligent; skilful and devoted study. Scholars have specialized to so great an extent that many conclusions are less speculative than they were, while many more aids are thus available for arriving at a general judgment; and, in some directions at least, the time for drawing such general conclusions, and so making practical use of such specialized research, seems to have come, or to be close at hand. Many people, therefore including the large mass of the parochial clergy and students, desire to have in an accessible form a review of the results of this flood of new light on many topics that are of living and vital interest to the Faith; and, at the same time, "practical" questions - by which is really denoted merely the application of faith to life and to the needs of the day - have certainly lost none of their interest, but rather loom larger than ever if the Church is adequately to fulfil her Mission. It thus seems an appropriate time for the issue of a new series of theological works, which shall aim at presenting a general survey of the present position of thought and knowledge in various branches of the wide field which is included in the study of divinity. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schools of Doubt and the School of FaithIT is a good many years since Adolphe Monod one day preached a sermon to his people on the words, God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.' The true Godhead and manhood of our Lord was the subject on which the preacher eloquently dwelt; and, at the conclusion, he announced that on the following Lord's-day he would again preach from the same text, and show the connexion of these great doctrines with the salvation of men. There was very much in the preaching of M. Monod that was distasteful to his congregation, or at least to his Consistoire, deeply tainted as they were with Socinianism, and other errors too prevalent among the Protestants of France; but the breadth and power with which the doctrines they disliked were asserted in this particular sermon, exasperated them beyond measure, and they warned Mr. M. That unless he abstained from preaching the second sermon, and avoided such subjects in future, they would complain of him to the prefect, and demand his removal. The law regarding Protestantism, at that time, made the twenty-five highest tax payers of the congregation elders and members of the Consistoire; and, in order to secure the removal of any.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Soul of Doubt proposes an alternative cause of unbelief: the Christian conscience. Dominic Erdozain argues that the real solvents of orthodoxy in the modern period have been concepts of moral equity and personal freedom generated by Christianity itself.

Book Religion in Human Evolution

Download or read book Religion in Human Evolution written by Robert N. Bellah and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice An ABC Australia Best Book on Religion and Ethics of the Year Distinguished Book Award, Sociology of Religion Section of the American Sociological Association Religion in Human Evolution is a work of extraordinary ambition—a wide-ranging, nuanced probing of our biological past to discover the kinds of lives that human beings have most often imagined were worth living. It offers what is frequently seen as a forbidden theory of the origin of religion that goes deep into evolution, especially but not exclusively cultural evolution. “Of Bellah’s brilliance there can be no doubt. The sheer amount this man knows about religion is otherworldly...Bellah stands in the tradition of such stalwarts of the sociological imagination as Emile Durkheim and Max Weber. Only one word is appropriate to characterize this book’s subject as well as its substance, and that is ‘magisterial.’” —Alan Wolfe, New York Times Book Review “Religion in Human Evolution is a magnum opus founded on careful research and immersed in the ‘reflective judgment’ of one of our best thinkers and writers.” —Richard L. Book The Gospel for a World of Sin

Download or read book The Gospel for a World of Sin written by Henry Van Dyke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel for a World of Sin: A Companion-Volume to "the Gospel for an Age of Doubt" This book is not meant to present a theory of the Atonement. On the contrary, it is meant to teach that there is no theory broad or deep enough to embrace or explain the fact. A sinful world cannot possibly know all that is needed to reconcile it with a holy God. Sin itself, in its root and in its relations, contains a mystery. So does love. But the Atonement is the work of God's love in its bearing upon man's sin. Therefore it must include more than we can explain. What Christ did to take away the sin of the world was precisely all that was needed, - neither more nor less. What we know of this need is what we know about the Atonement. One man sees one segment of the circle more clearly. Another man sees another segment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Age of Reason Classic Reprint

Download or read book Age of Reason Classic Reprint written by Thomas Paine and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Age of Reason This report of the proceedings on these Mock Trials, will be read with increasing interest as the human mind proceeds to burst the shackles of Priestcraft, and to expand over the boundless volume of Nature. Whatever lack of ability or of education the attempted Defence of the Defendant displays, still these pages are sufficient to shew the deluders and the deluded, that their delusion could not stand the examination he was prepared to make, and that brute force was found to be the only resource of the interested supporters of superstition, against free and fair discussion. Here the historian will find a connecting link to display the mischief and intolerance of all religion, by the sufferings of the various seceders from the religion of power from time to time. Let it be hoped that it will end here. Certain it is, that the delusion of religion is losing its hold, and that hypocrites and tyrants will not much longer make it an instrument of power to rob, or a rod of iron to rule the multitude. It cannot fail of being interesting to the reader to find inserted here a narrative of what occurred from the first publication of the Theological Works of Thomas Paine, down to the commencement of the Mock Trials. In the month of November, 1818, a rumour was afloat in London that the "Age of Reason" was on sale, or about to be published. The Priests were instantly in arms, and terror seemed to forbode that their shops were falling or being knocked down about their ears. Threats were made of the immediate seizure of the edition on its appearance (a circumstance which actually occurred in Pitt's time) but the publisher, was not to be intimidated, he knew too well the ground on which he stood, and how far he could go in the matter. Discussion occured in the public papers as to the propriety or impropriety of suppressing the publication, and it was evident to all that the bigots were silenced. At length the publication was ready on the 16th December, and in the evening of that day the walls of the metropolis were well placarded with the notice of publication. On the morning of the 17th, a messenger came from the Solicitor of the Treasury to enquire the actual publication and the price, but on finding they were sold at half a guinea the copy he retired, not having been furnished with money enough to make his purchase. In a very few minutes he returned for three copies, and was advised by the publisher to take half a dozen. Book God in a World at War Classic Reprint

Download or read book God in a World at War Classic Reprint written by Douglas Clyde Macintosh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God in a World at War HE most fundamental of religious problems now as always is the problem as to the nature and existence of God. There always has been in these modern days of transi tion from dogmatism to science a good deal of questioning and uncertainty as to the existence of God. But there is perhaps no more of this uncertainty at the present moment than there was before the outbreak of the war. Some who believed half-heartedly may have lost their faith but some others who were in honest doubt are now able, through deepened experience and reflection, to make an equally honest confession of faith. Uncertainty as to the existence of God is always due to one or the other, or both, of two causes. Sometimes it is because of a defective idea of God. Where the thought is incorrect, experience refutes instead of verifying. Some times the doubt is due to defective religious experience. However correct the idea of God, apart from religion it can be but problematical, a vague possibility. Moreover, each of these defects has a tendency to aggravate the other, Wrong ideas of God result in a defective religious experience, and the defective experience fails to correct wrong ideas, until any specially religious experience ceases and belief in God is given up. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living Questions of the Age The Essays and Discussions which are here collected were written at different times in the past. Some of them have been published in another form; and as two or three of the chapters have relation to the same subject there is necessarily some repetition of thought and argument, but in each case all the matter introduced was deemed necessary to a clear comprehension of the topic under consideration. The book is a collection of papers on Living Questions, each of which was occasioned by discussions prevalent at the time when the chapter was written, and all of them were designed to illustrate, define, or defend the Christian Religion in some of its relations to the well-being of mankind. Download or read book Byways of Belief Classic Reprint written by Conrad Noel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Byways of Belief If the search for truth be the supreme object of the Christian Religion, there is, of course, no inaccuracy in Mr Lloyd Thomas's analogy with the doctrine of evolution and the British Association. But Catholics would altogether deny that the Church was built as a Society for spiritual research. It was surely built to promulgate truth and to band men together as comrades in arms. Similes are dangerous things, but the metaphor of an army is much more fitting to the idea of the Church than the metaphor of a hunting party in doubt as to the quarry it hunts. It is not a common search but a common find that unites us. This is not to be taken as meaning that the Catholics of any particular age are to pride themselves on the possession of the whole truth, but the very object of their being banded together is that they may teach and live that truth which they do possess, and that, by living it, truth may be added to them in greater measure. The search for truth has been denied by Church ofificialdom, and its advocates have exalted it out of due proportion into the first essential of a Christian Church. Download or read book The Religion of an Educated Man Classic Reprint written by Francis Greenwood Peabody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of an Educated Man Companionship of the aca demic life, as sharers of the ideals ofeducated men. I meet you also in the larger fellowship of the religious life, which this college was founded to express, and which these lectures are designed to strengthen. At such a point of meeting, where the paths of education and religion join, and where one pauses as at the crossing of the roads, it is inevitable that he should glance along both these great highways of human life as they traverse the hills and valleys of experience, and should inquire whither each road directs the traveller and which way it is best to go. What is the relation of education to religion? How far do these two highways coincide and at what point do they part? Do their diverging tracks involve a lasting separation, or do the roads meet again as they approach a common end? What is it to be edu cated? What is it to be religious? What is the religion of an educated man? When one hears these uestions raised, he may well imagine that e is threatened with a renewal of the long-protracted debate concerning the relation of science and religion, - a debate on whose issue the life of the Christian Church has often been supposed to depend. What was to be come of religion in an age of science? How could the Mosaic cosmogony be ad justed to the doctrine of evolution? Was there room for miracle in a world of law? What was left of the Bible if its origin and its diversities of teaching were thoroughly explored? Must religion be dismissed from attention by a modern scholar as a survival of the pre-scientific View of the world? Was there any such thing as the religion of an educated man? - such have been the questions Which for generations seemed of critical significance for religion, and these bitter and prolonged controver sies necessarily involved much temporary doubt of mind and distress of heart. The ad'ustment of religion to the habit of mind ofj an educated man was often a painful process and often an impossible task.
