Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and Art: And Other Essays "Science, O man! thou sharest with higher spirits, But Art thou hast alone." God is revealed to all the faculties of the soul. He is truth; he is goodness; he is beauty. He is known; he is loved; he is adored. He is the first and final principle of all knowledge; he is the ideal of every art; he is the type of all high and holy living. Art is the expression of ideal beauty; the resplendence of mind in matter, of the archetype in nature. It does not copy, but creates; never rests in the seen, but is transcendental; looks beyond, through nature, up to God. Whatever it sees, it sees to be unsatisfactory, and whatever it does, it straightway wishes undone, because the work is eternally below the thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Essays: Essays on the Science of Religion The essay on Ancient Prayers has never, as far as I can ascertain, been published before. On looking through my father's papers I dis covered it among several unfinished essays, and as it was apparently ready for press I have included it in the present volume. The last essay, Is Man Immortal?' has also never been published in England, though it appeared in several American newspapers some years ago under the auspices of the American Press Association I am very grateful to that Association for supplying me with the manuscript which enables me to give it here as originally written. I have placed this article at the end of the volume, as it seemed to me that, whether they agree with its reasoning or not, every reader of my father's writings will feel that the last paragraph forms a beautiful ending to his literary work, a fitting farewell to the world which he was always trying to instruct and improve. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freedom and Fellowship in Religion: A Collection of Essays and Addresses Hat religion Still occupies the thoughts of men as a great human concern need not be argued. It may be said to occupy them as it never did in times when it claimed an interest on grounds of its own, Wholly separate from other human affairs. The relig ious question now makes a part of every question. There is scarcely a concern of any moment in which religion does not hold a conspicuous rank. It is de bated in the highest places; it is the business of empires; it occupies the thoughts of princes and administrators; politicians make account of it; statesmen and dema gogues alike take bearings from it. It haunts the sci entific mind; literature cannot leave it unrecognized; philosophy finds it mingling in all its problems. The social questions that vex our age address themselves to it less directly indeed, but no less earnestly, than of Old. They who talk of the declining interest in religion can not be close Observers of the times. The forms the interest takes may have Changed, but the interest was never so vital before. The religious aspect certainly has changed. The theological epoch draws near its close. Fifteen years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The God Function Deus Ex Grammatica

Download or read book The God Function Deus Ex Grammatica written by Morgan A. Brown and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-10-08 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if Theists and Atheists are both objectively wrong? What if the Agnostics have completely missed the point? THE ARGUMENT FROM GRAMMAR explores the omnipotent and omniscient ""God"" that is justified by reason in philosophy and religion. Brown demonstrates that we can justify this denotation in grammatical terms by recognizing in ""Subjects predicate"" a universally-valid Form of knowledge (""all knowledge"") and action (""all power""). Brown then proceeds to lay out an epistemological foundation for the human sciences, drawing upon a philosophical tradition rooted in the thought of Protagoras, Kant, Schopenhauer, and F.A. Hayek. Brown turns his critique of theism back upon the atheists in order to show how grammatical theory can also answer arguments against the God Thesis. If THE ARGUMENT FROM GRAMMAR can answer the objections of the Atheists while satisfying the Theists, then the future of the debate over the existence of a rationally-justified God shall be a debate over grammar and nothing more.

The Faith welcomes all truth, while it supplements external lessons by its own peculiar witness, and places partial and limited ex pressions of truth in their right relations to one an other and to the whole. Nothing lies outside the influence of its transfiguring power. Splendid visions burst upon us from unexpected quarters, and we find that they are included in that view of god the world and man which lies in the fact of the Incarnation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Great Religions: An Essay in Comparative Theology HE first six chapters of the present volume are com posed from six articles prepared for the Atlantic Monthly, and published in that magazine in 1868. They attracted quite as much attention as the writer antici pated, and this has induced him to enlarge them, and add other chapters. His aim is to enable the reader to become acquainted with the doctrines and customs of the principal religions of the world, without having to con sult numerous volumes. He has not come to the task without some preparation, for it is more than twenty five years since he first made of this study a speciality. In this volume it is attempted to give the latest results of modern investigations, so far as any definite and trust worthy facts have been attained. But the writer is well aware of the difficulty of being always accurate in a task which involves such interminable study and such an amount of details. He can only say, in the words of a Hebrew writer: If I have done well, and as is fitting the story, it is that which I desired but if slenderly and meanly, it is that which I could attain unto. Book Religion as Metaphor

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Tacey
  • Publisher : Transaction Publishers
  • Release : 2015-06-01
  • ISBN : 1412856299

Download or read book Religion as Metaphor written by David Tacey and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical stories are metaphorical. They may have been accepted as factual hundreds of years ago, but today they cannot be taken literally. Some students in religious schools even recoil from the “fairy tales” of religion, believing them to be mockeries of their intelligence. David Tacey argues that biblical language should not be read as history, and it was never intended as literal description. At best it is metaphorical, but he does not deny these stories have spiritual meaning. Religion as Metaphor argues that despite what tradition tells us, if we “believe” religious language, we miss religion’s spiritual meaning. Tacey argues that religious language was not designed to be historical reporting, but rather to resonate in the soul and direct us toward transcendent realities. Its impact was intended to be closer to poetry than theology. The book uses specific examples to make its case: Jesus, the Virgin Birth, the Kingdom of God, the Apocalypse, Satan, and the Resurrection. Tacey shows that, with the aid of contemporary thought and depth psychology, we can re-read religious stories as metaphors of the spirit and the interior life. Moving beyond literal thinking will save religion from itself.
