Book Relative Dentrifrice Abrasivity on Dentin and Enamel

Download or read book Relative Dentrifrice Abrasivity on Dentin and Enamel written by Laura Marchetti and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abrasive characteristics of six (6) brands of toothpastes on Enamel and Dentin material were assessed. Human teeth were sliced to expose the dentin surface and then polished using 3 æm and 0.25 æm diamond paste. The outside surface of the tooth (after slicing) was used "as is" for the enamel surface testing. The surface smoothness was evaluated prior to testing using a surface profiler and averaging four (4) to five (5) readings across the surface for each sample. The tooth slices were then embedded into the acrylic plate surface by routing out an area with a dental drill and using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) to adhere the teeth to the plate. An acrylic abrasion machine was used to brush each sample for 3000 strokes with each of the toothpastes being tested. At least three (3) samples of each material were used for each paste. The same type of medium stiffness brush was used for each test. The surface smoothness was then re-assessed using the surface profiler again averaging four (4) to five (5) readings across the surface. The data was statistically analyzed and ranked by abrasiveness.

Book Activated Charcoal Too Abrasive

Download or read book Activated Charcoal Too Abrasive written by Amber Selbee and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of activated charcoal has become prevalent in oral health products and concerns amongst dental professionals has risen on its safety. This study aims to determine if charcoal products are too abrasive on tooth enamel by comparing surface roughness changes after being subjected to toothbrush abrasion with charcoal and non-charcoal products. Twenty central incisors, collected from the Ohio State University restorative lab, were divided into four groups. Group one was brushed with Arm&Hammer Peroxicare toothpaste, group two was brushed with a mixture of Arm&Hammer Peroxicare toothpaste and activated charcoal powder, group three was brushed with charcoal powder mixed with water, and group four was brushed with plain water. The teeth were brushed with a toothbrushing machine for two-minute intervals which was repeated 60 times to mimic a month’s worth of brushing. The specimens were subjected to profilometric analysis before and after brushing to determine surface roughness changes. Results were analyzed with descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA. Results concluded that there was no significant difference on surface roughness values between groups, but there was a slight greater change in surface roughness changes with group two when comparing the mean RA change for each group.

Book Interaction Between Toothpaste Abrasivity and Toothbrush Filament Stiffness on the Development of Erosive Abrasive Lesions

Download or read book Interaction Between Toothpaste Abrasivity and Toothbrush Filament Stiffness on the Development of Erosive Abrasive Lesions written by Mona Arrageg and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Toothpaste abrasivity is considered the major contributor in toothbrushing abrasive wear, while toothbrush stiffness can be considered a secondary factor that may modify the abrasivity of toothpaste. Objectives: To investigate the longitudinal enamel and dentin surface loss caused by the interaction between the abrasives in toothpaste and toothbrush filament stiffness. Study Hypothesis: The amount of enamel and dentin loss depends on the abrasivity of the toothpaste and the filament stiffness of toothbrush. Materials and Methods: The following experimental factors were considered: abrasive suspension, at two levels (L-low: Z113 and H-high: Z103); and toothbrushes at three levels determined by bristle stiffness (soft, medium, and hard) generating 6 testing groups (n = 8). Slabs of bovine enamel and dentin were cut, embedded in acrylic resin, and polished. UPVC tapes were placed on the surface of the specimens, leaving an area of 1 × 4 mm exposed in the center of the each enamel slab. Specimens (n = 8) were subjected to 5 d of erosion/abrasion cycling: erosion (5min, 4×/d, 0.3% citric acid, pH 3.75), abrasion (15 s, 2×/d, 45 strokes each, 150-g load, automated brushing machine), fluoride treatment (15 s with abrasion and 45 s without abrasion; 275 ppm F as NaF in abrasive slurry) with exposure to artificial saliva between erosion and abrasion (1h) and all other times (overnight). Surface loss (SL, in micrometers) was determined by optical profilometry, after the third and fifth days of cycling. Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA (alpha = 0.05). For enamel, only cycling time was found to affect surface loss with 5 d > 3 d. Overall, there was little SL (mean range: 0.76 μm to 1.85 μm). For dentin (mean SL range: 1.87 μm to 5.91 μm), significantly higher SL was found for 5 d vs. 3 d, with particularly large differences for hard toothbrush high abrasive, and medium toothbrush/low abrasive. Hard toothbrush resulted in significantly higher SL than medium toothbrush for high abrasive after 5 d, with no other significant stiffness differences. High abrasive had significantly higher SL than low abrasive overall with strong effects for all combinations, except medium stiffness after 5 d. In conclusion, the interplay between abrasivity and filament stiffness appears to be more relevant for dentin than enamel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of increasing antibiotic resistance, stronger antibiotics are reserved for serious active infection, paving the way for a greater use of herbal antibiotics. This book helps dentists in implementing safe and effective natural medicine therapies to complement the current practice guidelines. Oral diseases continue to be a major health problem world-wide. Oral health is integral to general well-being and relates to the quality-of-life that extends beyond the functions of the craniofacial complex. The standard Western medicine has had only limited success in the prevention of periodontal disease and in the treatment of a variety of oral diseases. The dentist needs to be more informed regarding the use, safety and effectiveness of the various traditional medicines and over-the-counter products. Herbal extracts have been used in dentistry for reducing inflammation, as antimicrobial plaque agents, for preventing release of histamine and as antiseptics, antioxidants, antimicrobials, antifungals, antibacterials, antivirals and analgesics. They also aid in healing and are effective in controlling microbial plaque in gingivitis and periodontitis and thereby improving immunity. The 26 chapters in this unique book explore all the measures to utilize the natural oral care obtained from plants, animals and mineral drugs for dental care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the mass-marketed introduction of fluoride in toothpaste in the 1950s, toothbrushing with paste became indispensable for good oral health. Both the industry and the dental profession had a shared interest in advocating the widespread correct use of good quality toothpaste. This publication starts with a general introduction on the purpose, history and composition of toothpaste. The following chapters deal with the clinical evidence of its effectiveness in caries prevention, reducing and preventing plaque, gin-givitis, halitosis, and calculus formation, facilitating removal and prevention of extrinsic stain, and preventing dentine hypersensitivity and erosion. Later chapters provide valuable information on the abrasiveness of the pastes, the substantivity of active ingredients in the oral cavity and the possible models to study the effectiveness of the pastes when full-scale clinical trials are not possible. The final chapter focuses on the frequency of toothbrushing and post-brushing rinsing behavior. The book provides indispensable information for dentists, dental students and community dental programs on whether toothpastes can be recommended to patients for specific aims and how to use them to obtain the best effect.
