Book excerpt: To freshmen, a transition process from high school to university is a big commitment with numerous challenges; it creates considerable stress to them because they are required to adapt the new culture of the university. Therefore, many universities in United States have used diverse strategies for freshmen to help their transitions. This research focused on assimilation process (Jablin & Krone, 1987) by freshmen, and how social support from the university affects their assimilation process at a mid-sized Southwestern university. This research tried to investigate the effectiveness of two specific strategies, (1) mentoring services and (2) transition courses that were intended to provide social support for freshmen’s assimilation process. By comparing results of self-report survey between students who experienced mentoring services or took transition courses and student who did not, levels of social adaptation, satisfaction toward the university, and intention to stay at the university were tested. Six hypotheses were suggested, if students experienced mentoring services or took transition courses, they will report higher levels of adaptation, satisfaction, and intention to stay. However, the result of t-tests showed that there are no significant differences between students who were involved in mentoring services or took transition courses in reporting levels of adaptation, satisfaction and intention to stay. As a result, this research suggests that there should be more rationalization of social support strategies from the university to help freshmen in their assimilation process.
