Book Study of Intake Variables in Teacher Education

Download or read book Study of Intake Variables in Teacher Education written by MacMath and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our research examines the effectiveness of intake variables used by a Canadian post-degree teacher education program over the period of 3 years to select candidates for entry into the program. Using a mixed-methods approach, we compared intake variables (grade point average, written response, work experience, reference letters, academic preparation, and interviews) and ratings completed by faculty mentors after the completion of the school practicum (time spent in the classroom working with students and teachers in schools). After the practicum, these ratings were gathered on 14 program goals (e.g. classroom management, effective teaching practices, communication, and professionalism). In addition, qualitative analyses of university documents, rubrics as scoring tools, and focus group interviews with involved faculty were completed. Results over the 3 years revealed a great deal of variation that led to changes in intake variables and scoring tools. Discussion occurred around the different types of qualitative analyses, the types of mixed-methods designs available, and the importance of transparency.

Book Teacher Induction and Mentoring

Download or read book Teacher Induction and Mentoring written by Juanjo Mena and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws together various theoretical and research-based perspectives to examine the institutionalization of mentoring processes for beginning teachers. Teacher induction, defined as the guidance provided to new teachers, is increasingly gaining traction as a key stage in promoting quality education. Major efforts have been put into reducing transitional challenges from being a student teacher to a practicing teacher; optimizing professional relationships and socialization into school dynamics; and increasing teacher retention. Mentoring has been proven to add benefits in assisting beginning teachers during the early years of their teaching career, because it provides the required knowledge and skills to face uncertain school scenarios and the complexities of practice. However, teacher induction programs are not part of regular instruction in many countries. The lack of teacher training during the induction phase might result in lower levels of commitment, professional isolation, or even attrition. This book calls for more concrete mentoring processes for early career teachers, and questions how this can be put into practice.

Book Real time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms

Download or read book Real time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms written by Babin, Marcel and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2008-06-05 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.

Book Sniffy the Virtual Rat Pro Version 3 0 with CD ROM

Download or read book Sniffy the Virtual Rat Pro Version 3 0 with CD ROM written by Tom Alloway and published by Cengage Learning. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bring the theories of learning to life using SNIFFY, THE VIRTUAL RAT! Instructors praise Sniffy, a realistic digital rat in an operant chamber (Skinner Box), for his ability to give students hands-on experience in setting up and conducting experiments that demonstrate the phenomena of classical and operant conditioning. Users begin by training Sniffy to press a bar to obtain food. Then they progress to more studies of more complex learning phenomena. Throughout each, a series of Mind Windows enables students to visualize how Sniffy’s experiences in the chamber produce the psychological changes that their textbooks discuss in connection with learning. Available on a cross-platform CD-ROM, the Pro version of Sniffy includes fifty exercises that cover every major phenomena typically covered in a Psychology of Learning course. The CD-ROM comes with a Lab Manual that walks users through the steps necessary to set up classical and operant conditioning experiments that closely resemble the experiments discussed in learning texts. (Screen shots are included for both Macintosh and Windows users.) The manual also includes instructions on how to print or e-mail results so that Sniffy can become part of students’ homework assignments and term papers.
