Book An Archaeology of Abundance

Download or read book An Archaeology of Abundance written by Kristina M. Gill and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The islands of Alta and Baja California changed dramatically in the centuries after Spanish colonists arrived. Native populations were decimated by disease, and their lives were altered through forced assimilation and the cessation of traditional foraging practices. Overgrazing, overfishing, and the introduction of nonnative species depleted natural resources severely. Most scientists have assumed the islands were also relatively marginal for human habitation before European contact, but An Archaeology of Abundance reassesses this long-held belief, analyzing new lines of evidence suggesting that the California islands were rich in resources important to human populations. Contributors examine data from Paleocoastal to historic times that suggest the islands were optimal habitats that provided a variety of foods, fresh water, minerals, and fuels for the people living there. Botanical remains from these sites, together with the modern resurgence of plant communities after the removal of livestock, challenge theories that plant foods had to be imported for survival. Geoarchaeological surveys show that the islands had a variety of materials for making stone tools, and zooarchaeological data show that marine resources were abundant and that the translocation of plants and animals from the mainland further enhanced an already rich resource base. Studies of extensive exchange, underwater forests of edible seaweeds, and high island population densities also support the case for abundance on the islands. Concluding that the California islands were not marginal environments for early humans, the discoveries presented in this volume hold significant implications for reassessing the ancient history of islands around the world that have undergone similar ecological transformations. A volume in the series Society and Ecology in Island and Coastal Archaeology, edited by Victor D. Thompson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book should be regarded as the continuation to my previous book Developmental Biology of the Sea Urchin Embryo, edited by the Academic Press in 1973, rather than as a new edition. Due to the exceedingly high rate of development in this field (something like 2000 papers have been published on this subject in these last 10 years), I preferred, in fact, not to describe again in detail the enormous amount of the old literature, as was attempted in my previous book, but to briefly summarize the state of the art in each problem and to describe in some detail the experiments per formed in the last 12 years. In doing so, more emphasis was given to the more recent ones and to those which can be considered as corner stones in each subject. Care was, however, taken to mention the reviews or key papers in which the reader can find a source of the details of the older literature, besides refering him to my previous book.

Thesenatives of the Black, Caspian, Azov and Aral Sea drainage basins were firstdiscovered in Lake St. Clair near Detroit, Michigan, in 1988. By 1991, theyhad spread throughout the Great Lakes basin and are now establishedthroughout the Mississippi River basin and are spreading west intoOklahoma. Except for Oklahoma, zebra mussels have not been detected inopen waters of the West. However, without effective prevention measures, their invasion into the West is a real and imminent possibility

Book Reproduction and Development of Marine Invertebrates

Download or read book Reproduction and Development of Marine Invertebrates written by W. Herbert Wilson (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reproduction and Development of Marine Invertebrates a group of internationally recognized researchers assesses the state of current knowledge in the field and identifies future avenues of research. Comprehensive in scope, the book treats all levels of biological organization, from the molecular level to communities of organisms. After a brief historical overview that identifies the conceptual underpinnings of twentieth-century invertebrate zoology and embryology, the book is organized by developmental stages. The authors first present chapters on oogenesis, spermatogenesis, fertilization, and embryonic development. A subsequent section--arranged phylogenetically to encompass annelids, priapulans, molluscs, bryozoans, and echinoderms--covers larval morphology and evolution. The final section treats larval or adult populations and includes new information on the role of hydrodynamics to aid in the understanding of larval dispersal and settlement. Reproduction and Development of Marine Invertebrates is the first book of its kind to be published since 1978. Extensivelyillustrated with more than a hundred line drawings and photos--including sixty high-resolution electron micrographs--it will be of interest to professionals and students in evolutionary biology, invertebrate zoology, developmental biology, and functional morphology.

Book Marine Macrophytes As Foundation Species

Download or read book Marine Macrophytes As Foundation Species written by Emil Olafsson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine macrophytes (macroalgae, seagrasses, and mangroves) comprise thousands of species distributed in shallow water areas along the world's coastlines. They play a key role in marine ecosystems regarding biodiversity and energy flow. A large proportion of macrophyte species can be characterised as ecosystem engineers--organisms that directly or indirectly affect the availability of resources to other species by modifying, maintaining, and creating habitats. This book is divided into three main themes: - Marine macroalgae and seagrasses as sources of biodiversity gives an overview of the diversity of the main organisms associated with macrophytes, and their functional role and interactions within their hosts. - Primary and secondary production of Macrophytes synthesizes research on food web structures derived from/or associated with, macrophytes and the transfer of macrophytic primary and secondary production from one ecosystem to another. - Threats to macrophytic ecosystem engineers addresses human-induced effects including eutrophication, physical destruction, invasive species, and global warming. The book is among the first one to concentrate on the value of macrophytes for the well-being of marine habitats. The book is aimed at academics but may be useful for students, policy makers, and laymen alike.
