Book Relationship Between Leadership Styles Employee Commitment and Business Performance a Study of Black Top Managers in State owned Enterprises

Download or read book Relationship Between Leadership Styles Employee Commitment and Business Performance a Study of Black Top Managers in State owned Enterprises written by Tabea Regina Mabasa and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the leadership styles of black top managers, employee commitment and business performance in state-owned enterprises. With the transformation policies implemented in a post-democratic South Africa, the appointment of black managers into top management positions, in state-owned South African organisations, came with negative connotations and stereotypes attached to African leadership. These connotations have led to a concern about the ability of black managers to provide effective leadership in organisations. Whilst it is critical to appreciate that the business performance of an organisation is influenced by a cocktail of factors, indeed, leadership capability is often primarily questioned when strategic objectives are not achieved. It is for these reasons that the objective of this study sought to identify the prevalent leadership styles displayed by black top managers and to determine if these styles have any association with employee commitment and the business performance of State-owned Enterprises (SOEs). The study also explored the possible role of span of control in moderating the relationship between leadership styles and employee commitment. The study is grounded on the positivism philosophy. A deductive approach was employed to formulate the hypotheses so as to respond to the objectives of this study. A non-probability sampling method, specifically the judgemental sampling technique, was used to select black top managers in the SOEs. A survey method was employed to collect primary data in a cross-sectional manner from 232 direct reports of 38 black top managers in the state-owned enterprises in South Africa. The information collected was complemented by secondary data about the span of control of black top managers and the business performance of their units. Statistical analysis of collected data revealed that respondents perceived black top managers to predominantly display a transformational leadership style coupled with a contingent reward facet of the transactional leadership style. It was also observed that the transformational leadership style displayed a relationship with the affective commitment of employees. The study also found that as the span of control increases, the management by exception (Active) facet of transactional leadership style moderates the relationship between leadership style and organisational commitment. The findings of this study contribute to the building of a body of knowledge on African leadership within the context of management literature. This is owing to the fact that it provides invaluable insight to the leadership behaviour displayed by black top managers in SOEs within a South African context. While caution on attempts to generalise the studyaÌ22́Ơ4́Øs findings is necessary, in the studied population, top managers in South African SOEs and indeed their organisations may benefit from displaying a transformational leadership style as it lends itself to employee commitment. Further, the study also provides insights on moderating effect that span of control has in the mix of leadership style and employee commitment. The study contributes to theory and practice in the territory of leadership in an African context by highlighting the predominant usage of the transformational leadership style among black top CEOs in SOEs in South Africa, perhaps owing to the societal premium placed on the unique Ubuntu notion in South Africa. Besides this, the study also empirically demonstrates the link between the Management by Exception facet of the transactional leadership style and the affective commitment of employees. The implication of this finding is that black top managers SOEs that invest in the development practices coincident, particularly when spans of control are high, can engender levels of commitment in their employees that would prove beneficial to the organisation.

Book Female Employees Perceptions of Male Leaders Botho and Authentic Leadership Styles in Botswana

Download or read book Female Employees Perceptions of Male Leaders Botho and Authentic Leadership Styles in Botswana written by Tjedza Peba and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very little research focuses on a follower's perception of leadership. Furthermore, black African female employees' perception of a male leader's botho and authentic leadership style in Botswana parastatals has never been researched. Research has made it evident that leadership not only needs to be viewed from a leader-centric perspective but a follower-centric perspective should also be taken into consideration. Botho and authenticity are phenomena that are unique to a specific context. The conundrum to apprehend is how this influences a leader. This study thus aimed to identify how botho and authentic leadership is perceived and experienced by black African female employees, to explore whether male leaders are perceived to possess botho and authentic leadership styles, and enquire how important black African female employees regard botho and authentic leadership styles in male leaders. The study adopted a qualitative, grounded theory methodological approach to investigate the research purpose. Unstructured and semi-structured interviews were used to investigate the particular focus area. The data collection was split into two phases. Phase one comprised of focus groups, followed by phase two with individual interviews. A sample consisting of seven black African female employees from three parastatals in Botswana was used. This sample was selected as they had experience in the field of interest. The discussions were recorded and transcribed prior to being captured in Excel. Thematic coding was adopted to scrutinise the data. The findings of the study indicated that the followers would love for their opinions to be taken into consideration more. Facets mostly illuminated by the participants included the need for better communication, transparency and guidance. Respect and compassion were found to be the cornerstone of botho. Social awareness and self-awareness were found to be the grounding factors to being an authentic leader. Furthermore, it was found that cultural context is evidently an important factor to consider when approaching leadership. Due to the subjective nature of the study, the researcher could not generalise the findings. The participants' responses were based on their social construction and experiences. Future research should focus on developing constructs that participants regard as vital when measuring botho and authenticity. Developing a measurement tool that is valid and reliable for botho and authentic leadership whilst taking into consideration the cultural context would be beneficial to the development of the constructs.

Download or read book The Relationship Between Leadership Styles and Employees Organizational Commitment A Case of Debre Berhan University of Ethiopia written by Semu Bacha and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human resource is one of the essential factors for organizational success of any type. Particularly, it is a vivid fact that organizational commitment of academic staffs in the tertiary level institutions is interesting and vital because of the great importance they have in creating qualified and educated graduates to the country. This research is then aimed at assessing the relationship between leadership styles (Transformational, Transactional and Laissez-faire) and employees' organizational commitment (Affective, Continuance and Normative commitment) in the case of Debre Birhan University. Respondents were purposively grouped into two (Academic and Administrative) and probability sampling technique called stratified sampling was applied to each stratum and the total sample size of 242 (22 leaders and 220 employees) respondents were considered. Two separate instruments Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire and Organizational Commitment Questionnaire were used to measure leadership styles and employees' organizational commitment respectively. Finally, the responses of the respondents were analyzed using SPSS (version 16.0). The findings of the study revealed that Transformational Leadership style has a moderate, significant positive relationship with affective commitment while weak, but significant positive relationship with both continuance and normative commitment. While Transactional Leadership style has weak, but significant and positive correlation with all dimensions of commitments and Laissez-faire leadership style has extremely low, but insignificant, negative association with all dimensions of commitments. The overall finding of this study suggest that Leadership style do play important roles in determining levels of affective, continuance and normative commitments, especially Transformational and Transactional leadership styles. So, the institution's leaders should improve the level of employees' commitment, especially affective commitment dimension, and retain them through actually practicing effective type of leadership styles and creating conducive environment to employees.
